Coumarin-Based Dual Chemosensor for Colorimetric and Fluorescent Detection of Cu2+ in Water Media.

Project description:A novel coumarin derivative (5) was synthesized and used as a colorimetric and fluorescent probe for selective detection of Cu2+ ions in the presence of other metal ions, with the detection limits of 5.7 and 4.0 ppb, respectively. Cu2+ ion reacts with probe 5 to form a 1:1 stoichiometry complex, resulting in a remarkable redshift of absorption maximum from 460 to 510 nm, as well as almost completely quenching fluorescence intensity of probe 5 at the wavelength of 536 nm. These changes can be distinctly observed by naked eyes. In addition, the working pH range of probe 5 is wide and suitable for physiological conditions, thus probe 5 may be used for detection of Cu2+ ions in living cells. The stable structures of probe 5 and its 1:1 complex with Cu2+ ion were optimized at the PBE0/6-31+G(d) level of theory. The presence and characteristics of bonds in compounds were studied through atoms in a molecule and natural bond orbital analysis. The formation of the complex led to a strong transfer of electron density from probe 5 as a ligand to Cu2+ ion, resulting in breaking the π-electron conjugated system, which is the cause of fluorescence quenching and color change of 5-Cu2+ complex.

A Turn-On Fluorescent Chemosensor for Cyanide Ion Detection in Real Water Samples

Project description:We have designed and synthesized a novel simple colorimetric fluorescent probe with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties. Probe 5-(4-(diphenylamine)phenyl) thiophen-2-formaldehyde W exhibited a turn-on fluorescent response to cyanide ion (CN−), which induces distinct visual color changes. Probe W exhibited a highly selective and sensitive ratiometric fluorescence response for the detection of CN− over a wide pH range (4–11) and in the presence of common interferents. The linear detection of CN− over the concentration range of 4.00–38.00 µM (R2 = 0.9916, RSD = 0.02) was monitored by UV-Vis absorption spectrometry (UV-Vis) with the limit of detection determined to be 0.48 µM. The linear detection of CN− over the concentration range of 8.00–38.00 µM was examined by fluorescence spectrophotometry (R2 = 0.99086, RSD = 0.031), and the detection limit was found to be 68.00 nM. The sensing mechanisms were confirmed by 1H NMR spectroscopic titrations, X-ray crystallographic analysis, and HRMS. Importantly, probe W was found to show rapid response, high selectivity, and sensitivity for cyanide anions in real water samples, over the range of 100.17∼100.86% in artificial lake water and 100.54∼101.64% in running water by UV-Vis absorption spectrometry, and over the range of 99.42∼100.71% in artificial lake water and 100.59∼101.17% in running water by fluorescence spectrophotometry. Importantly, this work provides a simple and effective approach which uses an economically cheap and uncomplicated synthetic route for the selective, sensitive, and quantitative detection of CN− ions in systems relevant to the environment and health.

Fluorescent detection of phosphate anion by a highly selective chemosensor in water.

Project description:A macrocyclic dinuclear copper complex, [Cu(2) (II)(1)Br(4)]·2H(2)O has been synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystallography, in which each metal ion is pentacoordinated in a square pyramidal environment and the macrocycle is folded to form a boat-shaped empty cavity. As studied by an indicator displacement assay, the dinuclear complex shows strong selectivity for phosphate over sulfate, nitrate, perchlorate and halides in water at physiological pH.

A highly sensitive triazole-based perfectly water soluble novel bis-Schiff base reversible fluorescent-colorimetric chemosensor for fast detection of Pb2+ ions.

Project description:A reversible fluorescent-colorimetric azino bis-Schiff base receptor for the detection of Pb2+ in aqueous medium has been developed for the first time. Receptor L exhibits an excellent selective and rapid fluorescent-colorimetric response towards Pb2+. The sensitivity of the fluorescent-based assay (0.53 nM) and colorimetric assay (1.0 nM) for Pb2+ is sufficiently good in comparison to previously reported literature. From 1H NMR data, Job plot measurement and the ESI-MS spectrum, a 1 : 2 stoichiometric complexation between L and Pb2+ has been established. Receptor L shows a remarkable detection ability in a wide pH range of 4-8 and it has been successfully utilised in the determination of Pb2+ in aqueous solution of bovine serum albumin protein and in real samples. The geometry of L has been optimized by both DFT studies and NMR, FTIR and mass spectra. Moreover, we have studied molecular docking of the probe L.

Remarkable colorimetric sensing behavior of pyrazole-based chemosensor towards Cu(ii) ion detection: synthesis, characterization and theoretical investigations.

Project description:We report the synthesis of a new imine based ligand, 3-((3-methoxybenzylidene)amino)-1H-pyrazol-5-ol (HL) and its Cu(ii) complexes in 2 : 1 (HL : metal) and 1 : 1 : 1 (HL : metal : HQ) stoichiometric ratio using 8-hydroxyquinoline (HQ) as an additional bidentate ligand. The synthesized ligand (HL) and its Cu(ii) complexes (1 and 2) are structurally characterized using FT-IR, electronic absorption and emission, NMR and MS techniques. Furthermore, the complexation of Cu2+ with HL leads to the immediate formation of brown colour solution which indicates that HL can act as simple colorimetric sensor for Cu2+ ions. We further investigated that the sensor could selectively bind to the Cu2+ ions even in the presence of competitive ions such as Mn2+, Fe2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Zn2+, Ag+ and Na+ ions in aqueous solutions which was studied by electronic absorption spectroscopy. The HL ligand has been investigated for its reactive properties by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Quantum molecular descriptors describing local reactive properties have been calculated in order to identify the most reactive molecule sites of title compounds. DFT calculations encompassed molecular electrostatic potential (MEP), local average ionization energies (ALIE), Fukui functions and bond dissociation energies for hydrogen abstraction (H-BDE).

A Highly Selective Perylenediimide-Based Chemosensor: "Naked-Eye" Colorimetric and Fluorescent Turn-On Recognition for Al3.

Project description:A novel "turn-on" fluorescent probe (PCN) was designed, synthesized, and characterized with perylene tetracarboxylic disimide as the fluorophore and Schiff base subunit as the metal ion receptor. The probe demonstrated a considerable fluorescence enhancement in the presence of Al3+ in DMF with high selectivity and sensitivity. Furthermore, the considerably "off-on" fluorescence response simultaneously led to the apparent color change from colorless to brilliant yellow, which could also be identified by naked eye easily. The sensing capability of PCN to Al3+ was evaluated by the changes in ultraviolet-visible, fluorescence, Fourier transform-infrared, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, and high-resolution mass spectrometry spectroscopies. The linear concentration range for Al3+ was 0-63 μM with a detection limit of 0.16 μM, which allowed for the quantitative determination of Al3+.

Highly selective and sensitive macrocycle-based dinuclear foldamer for fluorometric and colorimetric sensing of citrate in water.

Project description:The selective detection of citrate anions is essential for various biological functions in living systems. A quantitative assessment of citrate is required for the diagnosis of various diseases in the human body; however, it is extremely challenging to develop efficient fluorescence and color-detecting molecular probes for sensing citrate in water. Herein, we report a macrocycle-based dinuclear foldamer (1) assembled with eosin Y (EY) that has been studied for anion binding by fluorescence and colorimetric techniques in water at neutral pH. Results from the fluorescence titrations reveal that the 1·EY ensemble strongly binds citrate anions, showing remarkable selectivity over a wide range of inorganic and carboxylate anions. The addition of citrate anions to the 1·EY adduct led to a large fluorescence enhancement, displaying a detectable color change under both visible and UV light in water up to 2 μmol. The biocompatibility of 1·EY as an intracellular carrier in a biological system was evaluated on primary human foreskin fibroblast (HF) cells, showing an excellent cell viability. The strong binding properties of the ensemble allow it to be used as a highly sensitive, detective probe for biologically relevant citrate anions in various applications.

A colorimetric chemosensor for Cu²⁺ ion detection based on an iridium(III) complex.

Project description:We report herein the synthesis and application of a series of novel cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes 1-3 bearing a rhodamine-linked NˆN ligand for the detection of Cu(2+) ions. Under the optimised conditions, the complexes exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity for Cu(2+) ions over a panel of other metal ions, and showed consistent performance in a pH value range of 6 to 8. Furthermore, the potential application of this system for the monitoring of Cu(2+) ions in tap water or natural river water samples was demonstrated.

A multi-functional chemosensor for highly selective ratiometric fluorescent detection of silver(I) ion and dual turn-on fluorescent and colorimetric detection of sulfide.

Project description:A multi-functional chemosensor 1 as silver and sulfide detector was synthesized by the combination of octopamine and 4-dimethylaminocinnamaldehyde. Sensor 1 exhibited a ratiometric fluorescence emission for Ag+ from blue to sky. The binding mode of 1 and Ag+ turned out to be a 1?:?1 ratio as determined using Job plot and electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectral analyses. The sensing mechanism of 1 with silver ion was unravelled by 1H NMR titrations and theoretical calculations. Sensor 1 also discerned sulfide by enhancing fluorescence intensity and changing colour from yellow to colourless in aqueous solution. The sensing properties of 1 toward S2- were investigated by using ESI-mass analysis, Job plot and 1H NMR titrations. Moreover, 1 could be used as a detector for sulfide in a wide pH range.

Highly Sensitive Ratiometric Chemosensor and Biomarker for Cyanide Ions in the Aqueous Medium.

Project description:A newly designed cyanide-selective chemosensor based on chromone containing benzothiazole groups [3-(2,3-dihydro-benzothiazol-2-yl)-chromen-4-one (DBTC)] was synthesized and structurally characterized by physico-chemical, spectroscopic, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. The compound DBTC can detect cyanide anions based on nucleophilic addition as low as 5.76 nM in dimethyl sulfoxide-N-(2-hydroxyethyl)piperazine-N'-ethanesulfonic acid buffer (20 mM, pH 7.4) (v/v = 1:3). The binding mode between receptor DBTC and cyanide nucleophile has also been demonstrated by experimental studies using various spectroscopic tools and theoretical studies, and the experimental work has also been verified by characterizing one supporting compound of similar probable structure of the final product formed between DBTC and cyanide ion (DBTC-CN compound) by single-crystal X-ray analysis for detailed structural analyses. In theoretical study, density functional theory procedures have been used to calculate the molecular structure and the calculation of the Fukui function for evaluation of the electrophilic properties of each individual acceptor atom. Furthermore, the efficacy of the probe (DBTC) to detect the distribution of CN- ions in living cells has been checked by acquiring the fluorescence image using a confocal microscope. Notably, the paper strips with DBTC were prepared, and these could serve as efficient and suitable CN- test kits successfully.
