Lactose permease (LacY), a paradigm for the largest family of membrane transport proteins, catalyzes the coupled translocation of a galactoside and a H<sup>+</sup> across the cytoplasmic membrane of <i>Escherichia coli</i> (galactoside/H<sup>+</sup> symport).
