This work reports that when PEG-lipid-shelled microbubbles with fluorocarbon interior (C<sub>4</sub>F<sub>10</sub>, C<sub>5</sub>F<sub>12</sub>, or C<sub>6</sub>F<sub>14</sub>) are subjected to ultrasound pulses, they produce metastable, fluid-filled nanoparticles that can be re-imaged upon administration of HIFU.
