Crystal structure of Li₃Ga(BO₃)₂.

ABSTRACT: The crystal structure of trilithium gallium bis-(orthoborate), Li₃Ga(BO₃)₂, is isotypic with Li₃Al(BO₃)₂ in a triclinic cell in space-group type P-1. The three Li and the unique Ga atom are coordinated by four O atoms each in tetra-hedra, and the two B atoms are coordinated by three O atoms in orthoborate triangles. Chains with composition [Ga₂(BO₃)₄]^6- extend along the a axis. The Li atoms inter-leave these chains in tetra-hedral inter-stices. A comparison is made between the structure model of the title compound and that of a previously reported model for a compound with the same composition [Abdullaev & Mamedov (1972 ?). Zh. Strukt. Project description:Single crystals of dibarium cobalt(II) bis-(orthoborate), Ba2Co(BO3)2, have been obtained from the melt. The crystal structure is composed of two isolated (BO3)3- triangles linked to Co2+ cations. The resulting [CoO5] square pyramids and the borate anions make up branched rows extending parallel to [010]. The barium cations occupy two sites in the voids of this arrangement and exhibit coordination numbers of nine each. A comparison with the structures of other A 2 M(BO3)2 compounds reveals a unique five-coordination of the small metal M in the title compound instead of four- or six-coordination for the other A 2 M(BO3)2 compounds with M = Cu, Zn, Mg, Ca, or Cd.

Crystal Structure of Garnet-Related Li-Ion Conductor Li7-3x Ga x La3Zr2O12: Fast Li-Ion Conduction Caused by a Different Cubic Modification?

Project description:Li-oxide garnets such as Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) are among the most promising candidates for solid-state electrolytes to be used in next-generation Li-ion batteries. The garnet-structured cubic modification of LLZO, showing space group Ia-3d, has to be stabilized with supervalent cations. LLZO stabilized with Ga3+ shows superior properties compared to LLZO stabilized with similar cations; however, the reason for this behavior is still unknown. In this study, a comprehensive structural characterization of Ga-stabilized LLZO is performed by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Coarse-grained samples with crystal sizes of several hundred micrometers are obtained by solid-state reaction. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction results show that Li7-3x Ga x La3Zr2O12 with x > 0.07 crystallizes in the acentric cubic space group I-43d. This is the first definite record of this cubic modification for LLZO materials and might explain the superior electrochemical performance of Ga-stabilized LLZO compared to its Al-stabilized counterpart. The phase transition seems to be caused by the site preference of Ga3+. 7Li NMR spectroscopy indicates an additional Li-ion diffusion process for LLZO with space group I-43d compared to space group Ia-3d. Despite all efforts undertaken to reveal structure-property relationships for this class of materials, this study highlights the potential for new discoveries.

Polymorphic Ga2S3 nanowires: phase-controlled growth and crystal structure calculations.

Project description:The polymorphism of nanostructures is of paramount importance for many promising applications in high-performance nanodevices. We report the chemical vapor deposition synthesis of Ga2S3 nanowires (NWs) that show the consecutive phase transitions of monoclinic (M) → hexagonal (H) → wurtzite (W) → zinc blende (C) when lowering the growth temperature from 850 to 600 °C. At the highest temperature, single-crystalline NWs were grown in the thermodynamically stable M phase. Two types of H phase exhibited 1.8 nm periodic superlattice structures owing to the distinctively ordered Ga sites. They consisted of three rotational variants of the M phase along the growth direction ([001]M = [0001]H/W) but with different sequences in the variants. The phases shared the same crystallographic axis within the NWs, producing novel core-shell structures to illustrate the phase evolution. The relative stabilities of these phases were predicted using density functional theory calculations, and the results support the successive phase evolution. Photodetector devices based on the p-type M and H phase Ga2S3 NWs showed excellent UV photoresponse performance.

LiMg0.1Co0.9BO3 as a positive electrode material for Li-ion batteries.

Project description:LiCoBO3 could be a promising cathode material given the electronic and ionic conductivity problems are addressed. Here, Mg substitution in LiCoBO3 is employed to stabilise the structure and improve the electrochemical performance. LiMg0.1Co0.9BO3 is synthesised for the first time via sol-gel method and Mg substitution in the structure is verified by X-ray powder diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray analyses. The electrochemical properties are investigated by galvanostatic cycling and cyclic voltammetry tests. The composite electrode with conductive carbon (reduced graphite oxide and carbon black) delivers a first discharge capacity of 32 mA h g-1 within a 4.7-1.7 voltage window at a rate of 10 mA g-1. The cycling is relatively stable compared to the unsubstituted LiCoBO3. Mg substitution may enhance the electrochemical performance of borate-based electrode materials when combined with suitable electrode design techniques.

Zr- and Ce-doped Li6Y(BO3)3 electrolyte for all-solid-state lithium-ion battery.

Project description:The ionic conductivity of Li6Y(BO3)3 (LYBO) was enhanced by the substitution of tetravalent ions (Zr4+ and Ce4+) for Y3+ sites through the formation of vacancies at the Li sites, an increase in compact densification, and an increase in the Li+-ion conduction pathways in the LYBO phase. As a result, the ionic conductivity of Li5.875Y0.875Zr0.1Ce0.025(BO3)3 (ZC-LYBO) reached 1.7 × 10-5 S cm-1 at 27 °C, which was about 5 orders of magnitude higher than that of undoped Li6Y(BO3)3. ZC-LYBO possessed a large electrochemical window and was thermally stable after cosintering with a LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 (NMC) positive electrode. These characteristics facilitated good reversible capacities in all-solid-state batteries for both NMC positive electrodes and graphite negative electrodes via a simple cosintering process.

Redetermination of the crystal structure of tetra-lithium octa-fluorido-zirconate(IV), Li4ZrF8, from single-crystal X-ray data.

Project description:Presented herein is the crystal-structure redetermination of Li4ZrF8 from single-crystal X-ray data. Alkali zirconium fluorides are important in nuclear-relevant technologies, and zirconium is commonly employed as an analogue for tetra-valent f-block elements. The previous structure report of this species is based on powder X-ray data [Dugat et al. (1995 ?). J. Solid State Chem. 120, 187-196] but there has never been a refined structure model from single-crystal data. The octa-fluorido-zirconate moieties are held together by electrostatic attraction to lithium ions without sharing of fluoride sites between zirconium(IV) ions.

Tailoring electronic-ionic local environment for solid-state Li-O2 battery by engineering crystal structure.

Project description:Solid-state Li-O2 batteries (SSLOBs) have attracted considerable attention because of their high energy density and superior safety. However, their sluggish kinetics have severely impeded their practical application. Despite efforts to design highly efficient catalysts, efficient oxygen reaction evolution at gas-solid interfaces and fast transport pathways in solid-state electrodes remain challenging. Here, we develop a dual electronic-ionic microenvironment to substantially enhance oxygen electrolysis in solid-state batteries. By designing a lithium-decorative catalyst with an engineering crystal structure, the coordinatively unsaturated sites and high concentration of defects alleviate the limitations of electronic-ionic transport in solid interfaces and create a balanced gas-solid microenvironment for solid-state oxygen electrolysis. This strategy facilitates oxygen reduction reaction, mediates the transport of reaction species, and promotes the decomposition of the discharge products, contributing to a high specific capacity with a stable cycling life. Our work provides previously unknown insight into structure-property relationships in solid-state electrolysis for SSLOBs.

Synthesis, Crystal Structure, and Stability of Cubic Li7-xLa3Zr2-xBixO12.

Project description:Li oxide garnets are among the most promising candidates for solid-state electrolytes in novel Li ion and Li metal based battery concepts. Cubic Li7La3Zr2O12 stabilized by a partial substitution of Zr4+ by Bi5+ has not been the focus of research yet, despite the fact that Bi5+ would be a cost-effective alternative to other stabilizing cations such as Nb5+ and Ta5+. In this study, Li7-xLa3Zr2-xBixO12 (x = 0.10, 0.20, ..., 1.00) was prepared by a low-temperature solid-state synthesis route. The samples have been characterized by a rich portfolio of techniques, including scanning electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, neutron powder diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and 7Li NMR spectroscopy. Pure-phase cubic garnet samples were obtained for x ? 0.20. The introduction of Bi5+ leads to an increase in the unit-cell parameters. Samples are sensitive to air, which causes the formation of LiOH and Li2CO3 and the protonation of the garnet phase, leading to a further increase in the unit-cell parameters. The incorporation of Bi5+ on the octahedral 16a site was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. 7Li NMR spectroscopy shows that fast Li ion dynamics are only observed for samples with high Bi5+ contents.

Triple-Vertex Linkage of (BO4 )-Tetrahedra in a Borosulfate: Synthesis, Crystal Structure, and Quantum-Chemical Investigation of Sr[B3 O(SO4 )4 (SO4 H)].

Project description:Borosulfates are classified as silicate analogue materials. The number of crystallographically characterized compounds is still limited, whereas the structural diversity is already impressive. The anionic substructures of borosulfates exhibit vertex-connected (BO4 )- and (SO4 )-tetrahedra, whereas bridging between two (SO4 )- or even between two (BO4 )-tetrahedra is scarce. The herein presented compound Sr[B3 O(SO4 )4 (SO4 H)] is the first borosulfate with a triple-vertex linkage of three (BO4 ) tetrahedra via one common oxygen atom. DFT calculations complement the experimental studies. Bader charges (calculated for all atoms) as well as charge-density calculations give hint to the electron distribution within the anionic substructure and density-of-states calculations support the interpretation of the bonding situation.

Crystal Structure Influences Migration along Li and Mg Surfaces.

Project description:Dendrite formation on Li metal anodes hinders commercialization of more energy-dense rechargeable batteries. Here, we use the migration energy barrier (MEB) for surface transport as a descriptor for dendrite nucleation and compare Li to Mg. Density functional theory calculations show that the MEB for the hexagonal close-packed structure is 40 and 270 meV lower than that of the body-centered cubic structure for Li and Mg, respectively. This is suggested as a reason why Mg surfaces are less prone to form dendrites than Li. We show that the close-packed facets exhibit lower MEBs because of smaller changes in atomic coordination during migration and thereby less surface distortion.
