Bacterial pathogens can interfere during infection with host cell organelles, such as mitochondria, the endoplasmic reticulum-Golgi system or nuclei. As important cellular functions are often compartmentalized in these organelles, their targeting allows pathogens to manipulate key host functions during infection.
