Project description:This paper deals with a new joint replenishment problem, in which a number of non-instantaneous deteriorating items are replenished from several suppliers under different quantity discounts schemes. Involving both joint replenishment decisions and supplier selection decisions makes the problem to be NP-hard. In particular, the consideration of non-instantaneous deterioration makes it more challenging to handle. We first construct a mathematical model integrated with a supplier selection system and a joint replenishment program for non-instantaneous deteriorating items to formulate the problem. Then we develop a novel swarm intelligence optimization algorithm, the Improved Moth-flame Optimization (IMFO) algorithm, to solve the proposed model. The results of several numerical experiments analyses reveal that the IMFO algorithm is an effective algorithm for solving the proposed model in terms of solution quality and searching stableness. Finally, we conduct extensive experiments to further investigate the performance of the proposed model.

Project description:This work presents a novel framework to simultaneously address the optimal planning of COVID-19 vaccine supply chains and the optimal planning of daily vaccinations in the available vaccination centres. A new mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model is developed to generate optimal decisions regarding the transferred quantities between locations, the inventory profiles of central hubs and vaccination centres and the daily vaccination plans in the vaccination centres of the supply chain network. Specific COVID-19 characteristics, such as special cold storage technologies, limited shelf-life of mRNA vaccines in refrigerated conditions and demanding vaccination targets under extreme time pressure, are aptly modelled. The goal of the model is the minimization of total costs, including storage and transportation costs, costs related to fleet and staff requirements, as well as, indirect costs imposed by wasted doses. A two-step decomposition strategy based on a divide-and-conquer and an aggregation approach is proposed for the solution of large-scale problems. The applicability and efficiency of the proposed optimization-based framework is illustrated on a study case that simulates the Greek nationwide vaccination program. Finally, a rolling horizon technique is employed to reactively deal with possible disturbances in the vaccination plans. The proposed mathematical framework facilitates the decision-making process in COVID-19 vaccine supply chains into minimizing the underlying costs and the number of doses lost. As a result, the efficiency of the distribution network is improved, thus assisting the mass vaccination campaigns against COVID-19.

Project description:With the development of multidetector computed-tomography (MDCT) scanners and ultrathin bronchoscopes, the use of bronchoscopy for diagnosing peripheral lung-cancer nodules is becoming a viable option. The work flow for assessing lung cancer consists of two phases: 1) 3-D MDCT analysis and 2) live bronchoscopy. Unfortunately, the yield rates for peripheral bronchoscopy have been reported to be as low as 14%, and bronchoscopy performance varies considerably between physicians. Recently, proposed image-guided systems have shown promise for assisting with peripheral bronchoscopy. Yet, MDCT-based route planning to target sites has relied on tedious error-prone techniques. In addition, route planning tends not to incorporate known anatomical, device, and procedural constraints that impact a feasible route. Finally, existing systems do not effectively integrate MDCT-derived route information into the live guidance process. We propose a system that incorporates an automatic optimal route-planning method, which integrates known route constraints. Furthermore, our system offers a natural translation of the MDCT-based route plan into the live guidance strategy via MDCT/video data fusion. An image-based study demonstrates the route-planning method's functionality. Next, we present a prospective lung-cancer patient study in which our system achieved a successful navigation rate of 91% to target sites. Furthermore, when compared to a competing commercial system, our system enabled bronchoscopy over two airways deeper into the airway-tree periphery with a sample time that was nearly 2 min shorter on average. Finally, our system's ability to almost perfectly predict the depth of a bronchoscope's navigable route in advance represents a substantial benefit of optimal route planning.

Project description:There are many different proposed procedures for sample size planning for the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test at given type-I and type-II error rates α and β, respectively. Most methods assume very specific models or types of data to simplify calculations (eg, ordered categorical or metric data, location shift alternatives, etc). We present a unified approach that covers metric data with and without ties, count data, ordered categorical data, and even dichotomous data. For that, we calculate the unknown theoretical quantities such as the variances under the null and relevant alternative hypothesis by considering the following "synthetic data" approach. We evaluate data whose empirical distribution functions match the theoretical distribution functions involved in the computations of the unknown theoretical quantities. Then, well-known relations for the ranks of the data are used for the calculations. In addition to computing the necessary sample size N for a fixed allocation proportion t = n1 /N, where n1 is the sample size in the first group and N = n1 + n2 is the total sample size, we provide an interval for the optimal allocation rate t, which minimizes the total sample size N. It turns out that, for certain distributions, a balanced design is optimal. We give a characterization of such distributions. Furthermore, we show that the optimal choice of t depends on the ratio of the two variances, which determine the variance of the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney statistic under the alternative. This is different from an optimal sample size allocation in case of the normal distribution model.

Project description:A recent meta-analysis identified optimal items for assessing sluggish cognitive tempo (SCT) as distinct from attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder inattention (ADHD-IN), and a preliminary study with teacher ratings of children in the United States found strong support for the convergent and discriminant validity of 15 SCT items. The current study evaluated whether the same 15 SCT items demonstrated convergent and discriminant validity from ADHD-IN in a large, community-based sample of children in Spain, and whether validity results were replicated across mother, father, and teacher ratings. Mothers, fathers, and teachers completed measures of SCT, ADHD-IN, ADHD-hyperactivity/impulsivity, oppositional defiant disorder, limited prosocial emotions, anxiety, depression, shyness, peer rejection, social impairment, and academic impairment on 2,142 Spanish children (49.49% girls; ages 8-13). The 15 SCT symptoms demonstrated convergent validity along with discriminant validity with ADHD-IN across all three informants. The SCT symptom ratings also showed measurement invariance across the informants. In addition, SCT and ADHD-IN factors had different and unique associations with the other symptom and impairment factors. The 15 SCT symptoms identified in this study-consistent across mother, father, and teacher ratings-appear appropriate to serve as a standard symptom set for assessing SCT in children. Use of a common set of symptoms in future studies will advance our understanding of the SCT construct, including its etiology and developmental progression, associations with ADHD and other psychopathologies, links to impairment, and implications for clinical intervention.

Project description:The current marketing landscape, apart from conventional approaches, consists of campaigns designed especially for launching information diffusion processes within online networks. Associated research is focused on information propagation models, campaign initialization strategies and factors affecting campaign dynamics. In terms of algorithms and performance evaluation, the final coverage represented by the fraction of activated nodes within a target network is usually used. It is not necessarily consistent with the real marketing campaigns using various characteristics and parameters related to coverage, costs, behavioral patterns and time factors for overall evaluation. This paper presents assumptions for a decision support system for multi-criteria campaign planning and evaluation with inputs from agent-based simulations. The results, which are delivered from a simulation model based on synthetic networks in a form of decision scenarios, are verified within a real network. Last, but not least, the study proposes a multi-objective campaign evaluation framework with several campaign evaluation metrics integrated. The results showed that the recommendations generated with the use of synthetic networks applied to real networks delivered results according to the decision makers' expectation in terms of the used evaluation criteria. Apart from practical applications, the proposed multi-objective approach creates new evaluation possibilities for theoretical studies focused on information spreading processes within complex networks.

Project description:In unstructured environments in people's homes and workspaces, robots executing a task may need to avoid obstacles while satisfying task motion constraints, e.g., keeping a plate of food level to avoid spills or properly orienting a finger to push a button. We introduce a sampling-based method for computing motion plans that are collision-free and minimize a cost metric that encodes task motion constraints. Our time-dependent cost metric, learned from a set of demonstrations, encodes features of a task's motion that are consistent across the demonstrations and, hence, are likely required to successfully execute the task. Our sampling-based motion planner uses the learned cost metric to compute plans that simultaneously avoid obstacles and satisfy task constraints. The motion planner is asymptotically optimal and minimizes the Mahalanobis distance between the planned trajectory and the distribution of demonstrations in a feature space parameterized by the locations of task-relevant objects. The motion planner also leverages the distribution of the demonstrations to significantly reduce plan computation time. We demonstrate the method's effectiveness and speed using a small humanoid robot performing tasks requiring both obstacle avoidance and satisfaction of learned task constraints.Note to practitionersMotivated by the desire to enable robots to autonomously operate in cluttered home and workplace environments, this paper presents an approach for intuitively training a robot in a manner that enables it to repeat the task in novel scenarios and in the presence of unforeseen obstacles in the environment. Based on user-provided demonstrations of the task, our method learns features of the task that are consistent across the demonstrations and that we expect should be repeated by the robot when performing the task. We next present an efficient algorithm for planning robot motions to perform the task based on the learned features while avoiding obstacles. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our motion planner for scenarios requiring transferring a powder and pushing a button in environments with obstacles, and we plan to extend our results to more complex tasks in the future.

Project description:Recent literature shows that many testing procedures used to evaluate asset pricing models result in spurious rejection probabilities. Model misspecification, the strong factor structure of test assets, or skewed test statistics largely explain this. In this paper we use the relative entropy of pricing kernels to provide an alternative framework for testing asset pricing models. Building on the fact that the law of one price guarantees the existence of a valid pricing kernel, we study the relationship between the mean-variance efficiency of a model's factor-mimicking portfolio, as measured by the cross-sectional generalized least squares (GLS) R 2 statistic, and the relative entropy of the pricing kernel, as determined by the Kullback-Leibler divergence. In this regard, we suggest an entropy-based decomposition that accurately captures the divergence between the factor-mimicking portfolio and the minimum-variance pricing kernel resulting from the Hansen-Jagannathan bound. Our results show that, although GLS R 2 statistics and relative entropy are strongly correlated, the relative entropy approach allows us to explicitly decompose the explanatory power of the model into two components, namely, the relative entropy of the pricing kernel and that corresponding to its correlation with asset returns. This makes the relative entropy a versatile tool for designing robust tests in asset pricing.

Project description:Ageing is characterized by the progressive impairment of physiological functions and increased risk of developing debilitating disorders, including chronic inflammation and neurodegenerative diseases. These disorders have common molecular mechanisms that can be targeted therapeutically. In the wake of the approval of the first cannabinoid-based drug for the symptomatic treatment of multiple sclerosis, we examine how endocannabinoid (eCB) signalling controls--and is affected by--normal ageing and neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative disorders. We propose a conceptual framework linking eCB signalling to the control of the cellular and molecular hallmarks of these processes, and categorize the key components of endocannabinoid signalling that may serve as targets for novel therapeutics.

Project description:Following Sir Bruce Keogh's review of 14 NHS Trusts, Buckinghamshire NHS Trust was found to have higher mortality rates than the England average. As part of a series of implementations and investigations to address this, a quality improvement project looking at clinical responses to the deteriorating patients was designed. Buckinghamshire NHS Trust utilises the National Early Warning Score (NEWS) metric for observations and escalation, and this was the standard used for the project. Episodes were eligible for inclusion if the NEWS score was increased to 5 or above. Data was collected by junior doctors from acute wards across the trust using notes and charts available. The initial cycle identified that in 57% of cases the high NEWS was escalated for review. Only half of cases were reviewed by a doctor; only a third were reviewed within an hour. In only 20% of cases were all criteria of the NEWS guidelines met. The first intervention was through education. After this, the project was completed on a monthly basis for 6 months with additional interventions introduced, including increased medical staff availability, grand round presentations, and increased outreach provision. Over this 6 month period, there was an increase to 87% of cases being reviewed by a doctor of appropriate seniority. Whilst this is a surrogate for reducing mortality and improving the clinical care given in the hospital, these results suggest successful interventions for improving clinical response to deteriorating patients across the trust. The project has recruited a new cohort of juniors to continue the quality improvement cycle.
