Project description:This study proposes an explanation for the physical power flow in planar circuits by analogy to theoretical two-dimensional circuits using a new mathematical model based on Geometric Algebra (GA) and 2D Maxwell's equations. In contrast with traditional 3D physics in the observable real world, the magnetic field can be defined as a bivector instead of an axial vector allowing to obtain the Poynting Vector directly in a 2D flat world, where physical variables of planar circuits can be obtained. This approach is presented here for the first time to the best of the author's knowledge. Previous investigations have focused on simplifications and symmetries of real 3D circuits studied mainly in the phasor and frequency domain. In this work, the electromagnetic power flow phenomenon is analyzed on a completely 2D time-domain basis and derived directly from the undisputed Maxwell equations, formulated in two dimensions. Several cases of special interest in AC multi-phase circuits are presented using the proposed technique, bringing a new simplified approach to the measurement of power flow exchange between the source and the load. It suggests a new way to understand energy propagation from a purely physical point of view.

Project description:Quantum-dot cellular automata, is an extremely small size and a powerless nanotechnology. It is the possible alternative to current CMOS technology. Reversible QCA logic is the most important issue at present time to reduce power losses. This paper presents a novel reversible logic gate called the F-Gate. It is simplest in design and a powerful technique to implement reversible logic. A systematic approach has been used to implement a novel single layer reversible Full-Adder, Full-Subtractor and a Full Adder-Subtractor using the F-Gate. The proposed Full Adder-Subtractor has achieved significant improvements in terms of overall circuit parameters among the most previously cost-efficient designs that exploit the inevitable nano-level issues to perform arithmetic computing. The proposed designs have been authenticated and simulated using QCADesigner tool ver. 2.0.3.

Project description:Research on various neuro-inspired technologies has received much attention. However, while higher-order neural functions such as recognition have been emphasized, the fundamental properties of neural circuits as advanced control systems have not been fully exploited. Here, we applied the functions of central pattern generators, biological neural circuits for motor control, to the control technology of switching circuits for extremely power-saving terminal edge devices. By simply applying a binary waveform with an arbitrary temporal pattern to the transistor gate, low-power and real-time switching control can be achieved. This binary pattern generator consists of a specially designed spiking neuron circuit that generates spikes after a pre-programmed wait time in the six-order range, but consumes negligible power, with an experimental record of 1.2 pW per neuron. This control scheme has been successfully applied to voltage conversion circuits consuming only a few nanowatts, providing an ultra-low power technology for trillions of self-powered edge systems.

Project description:BackgroundChildhood language development is related to long term educational, employment, health and social outcomes. Previous research identifies a complex range of risk and protective factors which result in good and poor language outcomes for children, however children at risk are an underrepresented group in these studies. Our aim is to investigate the combinations of factors (paths) that result in good and poor language outcomes for a group of 5 year old children of mothers experiencing adversity.MethodsThis mixed methods study utilised longitudinal data from a randomised control trial of sustained home visiting (MECSH) to determine the language outcomes in at risk children. Mothers were randomly assigned to a comparison group at entry to the study (prior to child's birth). Their children who were retained at entry to school completed language assessments (n = 41) and were participants in this study. Influence of 13 key factors derived from the extant literature that impact language development were explored. Regression was used to determine the six key factors of influence and these were used in the Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA). QCA was employed to examine the necessary and sufficient conditions and paths affecting language development linked to good and poor language outcomes. A post hoc analysis of the risk and protective paths to good and poor language outcomes was also conducted.ResultsThirteen distinct pathways led to good language outcomes and four paths to poor language outcomes in five year old at risk children. A variety of condition combinations resulted in these outcomes, with maternal responsivity, toddler development and number of children in the home being key. High and low maternal education influenced both good and poor language development.ConclusionsThe paths to good and poor language outcomes were different and complex. Most paths to a good language outcome involved protective factors, though not always. In addition, paths to poor language more often involved risk factors. The varied patterns of risk and protective factors point to the need for interventions across the first five years of life in both health and education for families which can respond to these risk and protective patterns.Trial registrationThe original RCT was retrospectively registered in the ANCTR: ACTRN12608000473369 .

Project description:This dataset includes 1032 runs from a biomass downdraft gasifier integrated with power production unit that is fed by 86 different types of biomasses from different groups (e.g. wood and woody biomasses, herbaceous and agricultural biomasses, animal biomasses, mixed biomasses and contaminated biomasses) and under various operating conditions. The dataset covers elemental and proximate analysis of various biomasses, operation conditions and the net output power from the biomass gasification-power production (BG-PP) in each case/run. This article has been submitted via another Elsevier journal as a co-submission, titled "Artificial neural network integrated with thermodynamic equilibrium modeling of downdraft biomass gasification-power production plant" [1]. In fact, this dataset has been used to train and test the developed Artificial neural network modeling of a downdraft BG-PP in our original research paper [1].

Project description:The development of components for terahertz wireless communications networks has become an active and growing research field. However, in most cases these components have been studied using a continuous or broadband-pulsed terahertz source, not using a modulated data stream. This limitation may mask important aspects of the performance of the device in a realistic system configuration. We report the characterization of one such device, a frequency multiplexer, using modulated data at rates up to 10 gigabits per second. We also demonstrate simultaneous error-free transmission of two signals at different carrier frequencies, with an aggregate data rate of 50 gigabits per second. We observe that the far-field spatial variation of the bit error rate is different from that of the emitted power, due to a small nonuniformity in the angular detection sensitivity. This is likely to be a common feature of any terahertz communication system in which signals propagate as diffracting beams not omnidirectional broadcasts.There is growing interest in the development of components to facilitate wireless communications in the terahertz but the characterization of these systems involve an unmodulated input. Here the authors demonstrate multiplexing and demultiplexing of data streams in the terahertz range using a real data link.
