A hallmark of stroke is water accumulation (edema) resulting from dysregulation of osmotic homeostasis. Brain edema contributes to tissue demise and may lead to increased intracranial pressure and lethal herniation. Currently, there are only limited treatments to prevent edema formation following stroke.
