Computational optical palpation: a finite-element approach to micro-scale tactile imaging using a compliant sensor.

ABSTRACT: High-resolution tactile imaging, superior to the sense of touch, has potential for future biomedical applications such as robotic surgery. In this paper, we propose a tactile imaging method, termed computational optical palpation, based on measuring the change in thickness of a thin, compliant layer with optical coherence tomography and calculating tactile stress using finite-element analysis. We demonstrate our method on test targets and on freshly excised human breast fibroadenoma, demonstrating a resolution of up to 15-25 µm and a field of view of up to 7 mm. Our method is open source and readily adaptable to other imaging modalities, such as ultrasonography and confocal microscopy.

Finite element analysis of the interaction between high-compliant balloon catheters and non-cylindrical vessel structures: towards tactile sensing balloon catheters.

Project description:Aiming for sensing balloon catheters which are able to provide intraoperative information of the vessel stiffness and shape, the present study uses finite element analysis (FEA) to evaluate the interaction between high-compliant elastomer balloon catheters with the inner wall of a non-cylindrical-shaped lumen structure. The contact simulations are based on 3D models with varying balloon thicknesses and varying tissue geometries to analyse the resulting balloon and tissue deformation as well as the inflation pressure dependent contact area. The wrinkled tissue structure is modelled by utilizing a two-layer fibre-based Holzapfel-Gasser-Ogden constitutive model and the model parameters are adapted based on available biomechanical data for human urethral vessel samples. The balloon catheter structure is implemented as a high-compliant hyper-elastic silicone material (based on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)) with a varying catheter wall thickness between 0.5 and 2.5 µm. Two control parameters are introduced to describe the balloon shape adaption in reaction to a wrinkled vessel wall during the inflation process. Basic semi-quantitative relations are revealed depending on the evolving balloon deformation and contact surface. Based on these relations some general design guidelines for balloon-based sensor catheters are presented. The results of the conducted in-silico study reveal some general interdependencies with respect to the compliance ratio between balloon and tissue and also in respect of the tissue aspect ratio. Further they support the proposed concept of high-compliant balloon catheters equipped for tactile sensing as diagnosis approach in urology and angioplasty.

A Micro-Scale Non-Linear Finite Element Model to Optimize the Mechanical Behavior of Bioprinted Constructs.

Project description:Extrusion-based bioprinting is an enabling biofabrication technique that is used to create heterogeneous tissue constructs according to patient-specific geometries and compositions. The optimization of bioinks as per requirements for specific tissue applications is an essential exercise in ensuring clinical translation of the bioprinting technologies. Most notably, optimum hydrogel polymer concentrations are required to ensure adequate mechanical properties of bioprinted constructs without causing significant shear stresses on cells. However, experimental iterations are often tedious for optimizing the bioink properties. In this work, a nonlinear finite element modeling approach has been undertaken to determine the effect of different bioink parameters such as composition, concentration on the range of stresses being experienced by the cells in the bioprinted construct. The stress distribution of the cells at different parts of the constructs has also been modeled. It is found that both bioink chemical compositions and concentrations can substantially alter the stress effects experienced by the cells. Concentrated regions of softer cells near pore regions were found to increase stress concentrations by almost three times compared with stress generated in cells away from the pores. The study provides a method for rapid optimization of bioinks, design of bioprinted constructs, as well as toolpath plans for fabricating constructs with homogenous properties.

Optical-Tactile Sensor for Lump Detection Using Pneumatic Control.

Project description:Soft tactile sensors are an attractive solution when robotic systems must interact with delicate objects in unstructured and obscured environments, such as most medical robotics applications. The soft nature of such a system increases both comfort and safety, while the addition of simultaneous soft active actuation provides additional features and can also improve the sensing range. This paper presents the development of a compact soft tactile sensor which is able to measure the profile of objects and, through an integrated pneumatic system, actuate and change the effective stiffness of its tactile contact surface. We report experimental results which demonstrate the sensor's ability to detect lumps on the surface of objects or embedded within a silicone matrix. These results show the potential of this approach as a versatile method of tactile sensing with potential application in medical diagnosis.

Finite Element Framework for Computational Fluid Dynamics in FEBio.

Project description:The mechanics of biological fluids is an important topic in biomechanics, often requiring the use of computational tools to analyze problems with realistic geometries and material properties. This study describes the formulation and implementation of a finite element framework for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in FEBio, a free software designed to meet the computational needs of the biomechanics and biophysics communities. This formulation models nearly incompressible flow with a compressible isothermal formulation that uses a physically realistic value for the fluid bulk modulus. It employs fluid velocity and dilatation as essential variables: The virtual work integral enforces the balance of linear momentum and the kinematic constraint between fluid velocity and dilatation, while fluid density varies with dilatation as prescribed by the axiom of mass balance. Using this approach, equal-order interpolations may be used for both essential variables over each element, contrary to traditional mixed formulations that must explicitly satisfy the inf-sup condition. The formulation accommodates Newtonian and non-Newtonian viscous responses as well as inviscid fluids. The efficiency of numerical solutions is enhanced using Broyden's quasi-Newton method. The results of finite element simulations were verified using well-documented benchmark problems as well as comparisons with other free and commercial codes. These analyses demonstrated that the novel formulation introduced in FEBio could successfully reproduce the results of other codes. The analogy between this CFD formulation and standard finite element formulations for solid mechanics makes it suitable for future extension to fluid-structure interactions (FSIs).

Influence of the shape of the micro-finite element model on the mechanical properties calculated from micro-finite element analysis.

Project description:Assessing the biomechanical properties of trabecular bone is of major biological and clinical significance for the research of bone diseases, fractures and their treatments. Micro-finite element (µFE) models are becoming increasingly popular for investigating the biomechanical properties of trabecular bone. The shapes of µFE models typically include cube and cylinder. Whether there are differences between cubic and cylindrical µFE models has not yet been studied. In the present study, cubic and cylindrical µFE models of human vertebral trabecular bone were constructed. A 1% strain was prescribed to the model along the superior-inferior direction. E values were calculated from these models, and paired t-tests were performed to determine whether these were any differences between E values obtained from cubic and cylindrical models. The results demonstrated that there were no statistically significant differences in the E values between cubic and cylindrical models, and there were no significant differences in Von Mises stress distributions between the two models. These findings indicated that, to construct µFE models of vertebral trabecular bone, cubic or cylindrical models were both feasible. Choosing between the cubic or cylindrical µFE model is dependent upon the specific study design.

Chip-scale optical airflow sensor.

Project description:Airflow sensors are an essential component in a wide range of industrial, biomedical, and environmental applications. The development of compact devices with a fast response and wide measurement range capable of in situ airflow monitoring is highly desirable. Herein, we report a miniaturized optical airflow sensor based on a GaN chip with a flexible PDMS membrane. The compact GaN chip is responsible for light emission and photodetection. The PDMS membrane fabricated using a droplet-based molding process can effectively transform the airflow stimuli into optical reflectance changes that can be monitored by an on-chip photodetector. Without the use of external components for light coupling, the proposed sensor adopting the novel integration scheme is capable of detecting airflow rates of up to 53.5 ms-1 and exhibits a fast response time of 12 ms, holding great promise for diverse practical applications. The potential use in monitoring human breathing is also demonstrated.

A Comparative 3D Finite Element Computational Study of Three Connections.

Project description:Masticatory overload on dental implants is one of the causes of marginal bone resorption. The implant-abutment connection (IAC) design plays a critical role in the quality of the stress distribution, and, over the years, different designs were proposed. This study aimed to assess the mechanical behavior of three different types of IAC using a finite element model (FEM) analysis. Three types of two-piece implants were designed: two internal conical connection designs (models A and B) and one internal flat-to-flat connection design (model C). This three-dimensional analysis evaluated the response to static forces on the three models. The strain map, stress analysis, and safety factor were assessed by means of the FEM examination. The FEM analysis indicated that forces are transmitted on the abutment and implant's neck in model B. In models A and C, forces were distributed along the internal screw, abutment areas, and implant's neck. The stress distribution in model B showed a more homogeneous pattern, such that the peak forces were reduced. The conical shape of the head of the internal screw in model B seems to have a keystone role in transferring the forces at the surrounding structures. Further experiments should be carried out in order to confirm the present suppositions.

Design, Motivation and Evaluation of a Full-Resolution Optical Tactile Sensor.

Project description:Human skin is capable of sensing various types of forces with high resolution and accuracy. The development of an artificial sense of touch needs to address these properties, while retaining scalability to large surfaces with arbitrary shapes. The vision-based tactile sensor proposed in this article exploits the extremely high resolution of modern image sensors to reconstruct the normal force distribution applied to a soft material, whose deformation is observed on the camera images. By embedding a random pattern within the material, the full resolution of the camera can be exploited. The design and the motivation of the proposed approach are discussed with respect to a simplified elasticity model. An artificial deep neural network is trained on experimental data to perform the tactile sensing task with high accuracy for a specific indenter, and with a spatial resolution and a sensing range comparable to the human fingertip.

Micro Finite Element models of the vertebral body: Validation of local displacement predictions.

Project description:The estimation of local and structural mechanical properties of bones with micro Finite Element (microFE) models based on Micro Computed Tomography images depends on the quality bone geometry is captured, reconstructed and modelled. The aim of this study was to validate microFE models predictions of local displacements for vertebral bodies and to evaluate the effect of the elastic tissue modulus on model's predictions of axial forces. Four porcine thoracic vertebrae were axially compressed in situ, in a step-wise fashion and scanned at approximately 39μm resolution in preloaded and loaded conditions. A global digital volume correlation (DVC) approach was used to compute the full-field displacements. Homogeneous, isotropic and linear elastic microFE models were generated with boundary conditions assigned from the interpolated displacement field measured from the DVC. Measured and predicted local displacements were compared for the cortical and trabecular compartments in the middle of the specimens. Models were run with two different tissue moduli defined from microindentation data (12.0GPa) and a back-calculation procedure (4.6GPa). The predicted sum of axial reaction forces was compared to the experimental values for each specimen. MicroFE models predicted more than 87% of the variation in the displacement measurements (R2 = 0.87-0.99). However, model predictions of axial forces were largely overestimated (80-369%) for a tissue modulus of 12.0GPa, whereas differences in the range 10-80% were found for a back-calculated tissue modulus. The specimen with the lowest density showed a large number of elements strained beyond yield and the highest predictive errors. This study shows that the simplest microFE models can accurately predict quantitatively the local displacements and qualitatively the strain distribution within the vertebral body, independently from the considered bone types.

Compliant Underwater Manipulator with Integrated Tactile Sensor for Nonlinear Force Feedback Control of an SMA Actuation System.

Project description:Design, sensing, and control of underwater gripping systems remain challenges for soft robotic manipulators. Our study investigates these critical issues by designing a shape memory alloy (SMA) actuation system for a soft robotic finger with a directly 3D-printed stretchable skin-like tactile sensor. SMA actuators were thermomechanically trained to assume a curved finger-like shape when Joule heated, and the flexible multi-layered tactile sensor was directly 3D-printed onto the surface of the fingertip. A nonlinear controller was developed to enable precise fingertip force control using feedback from the compliant tactile sensor. Underwater experiments were conducted using closed-loop force feedback from the directly 3D-printed tactile sensor with the SMA actuators, showing satisfactory force tracking ability. Furthermore, a 3D finite element model was developed to more deeply understand the shape memory thermal-fluidic-structural multi-physics simulation of the manipulator underwater. An application for human control via electromyogram (EMG) signals also demonstrated an intuitive way for a person to operate the submerged robotic finger. Together, these results suggested that the soft robotic finger could be used to carefully manipulate fragile objects underwater.
