Major advances in the treatment of multiple myeloma in American Society of Hematology annual meeting 2020.

Project description:Treatment of multiple myeloma (MM) has advanced dramatically in the past two decades. However, under the conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic, treatment strategies have been modified accordingly. Numerous novel agents, updated trials, and major advances in myeloma have been reported in the American Society of Hematology 2020 annual meeting, either for transplant-eligible or ineligible patients. Hot topics such as the significance of autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT), development of novel agents, and chimeric antigen receptor-T (CAR-T) cells have been widely discussed. The triplet regimen bortezomib, lenalidomide, and dexamethasone (VRd) is recommended as the standard first-line treatment, and the addition of a fourth drug improves efficacy and survival. The value of ASCT remains undoubtful, even in the era of quadruplet induction. Dual-drug maintenance, including proteasome inhibitors and immunomodulatory drugs, overcomes unfavorable outcomes in high-risk patients. For relapsed/refractory myeloma (RRMM) patients, novel agents such as selinexor and venetoclax are superior. CAR-T cells and other cell-surface-targeted therapies also appear promising.

Updates from the 2016 American Society of Hematology annual meeting: practice-changing studies in untreated follicular lymphoma

Project description:The 2016 annual meeting of the American Society of Hematology took place in San Diego, California, 3–6 December. At the meeting, results from key studies on the first-line treatment of follicular lymphoma were presented. Of those studies, key oral presentations included two analyzing data from the gallium study, which evaluated the efficacy and safety of obinutuzumab plus chemotherapy (G-chemo) compared with rituximab plus chemotherapy (R-chemo), followed, in responding patients with follicular lymphoma, by obinutuzumab or rituximab maintenance; results from the sabrina study, which evaluated the efficacy and safety of subcutaneous compared with intravenous rituximab; results of a cost-effectiveness analysis of first-line treatment with bendamustine and rituximab from a Canadian perspective; and results from the SAKK 35/10 study, which evaluated the safety and efficacy of rituximab plus lenalidomide compared with rituximab monotherapy. Our meeting report describes the foregoing studies and includes interviews with the Canadian investigators, plus commentaries by those investigators about the potential impact on Canadian practice.

Publication rate of abstracts presented at the Australian Orthopaedic Association Annual Scientific Meeting.

Project description:BackgroundPresentations at scientific conferences are an important method of research dissemination, with abstracts often used to inform clinical practice. Abstract to publication ratio is a commonly used tool for determining meeting quality. The aim of this study was to determine the publication rate for abstracts presented at the Australian Orthopaedic Association Annual Scientific Meeting (AOA ASM) between 2012 and 2015 inclusive and identify reasons for non-publication.MethodsMEDLINE, PubMed and Google Scholar were searched to determine whether each abstract presented at AOA ASMs between 2012 and 2015 was associated with a full text publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Where a publication could not be located, the presenter was contacted to confirm the reason for non-publication.ResultsA total of 1130 abstracts were submitted (951 oral and 179 posters), and 573 resulted in full-text peer-reviewed publications (51%). The majority of publications (73%) were published within 2 years of presentation. There was no difference in likelihood of publication for oral presentations compared to posters, nor in the rate of publication across the 4 years of meetings. Common reasons for non-publication were lack of time (32%), publication considered low priority (27%) and journal rejections (22%).ConclusionThe overall publication rate for abstracts presented at the AOA ASM is 51%, which is an increase from the 1998 ASM (31%). This publication rate is higher than many similar Australian meetings and on par with other international orthopaedic and subspecialty meetings. Future research should investigate potential publication bias and methods to minimise barriers to publication.
