School grounds and physical activity: Associations at secondary schools, and over the transition from primary to secondary schools.

ABSTRACT: This paper aims to further understanding of the physical environments of secondary schools and their associations with young peoples' physical activity. Accelerometer-derived physical activity measurements from 299 participants in the SPEEDY study (Norfolk, UK) were obtained from baseline measurements (age 9-10y) and +4y follow-up. These were linked to objective measures of primary and secondary school environments as measured by the SPEEDY grounds audit tool. We saw considerable differences in the nature of school grounds between primary and secondary schools. Cross-sectional associations were seen between active travel provision scores and commuting time moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) for 13-14 year old boys and adolescents living further from school. However, few associations were seen between changes in school grounds scores and changes in school-based MVPA.

Project description:INTRODUCTION:Previous longitudinal studies indicate that physical activity (PA) significantly declines from primary-to secondary school, and report both changes in individual and environmental determinants of PA. In order to understand this transition and to prevent this negative trend, it is important to gather contextually rich data on possible mechanisms that drive this decline. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate changes of PA patterns in transition between primary and secondary school, and to add domain-specific insights of how, where, and when these changes occur. METHODS:In total, 175 children participated in a 7-day accelerometer- and Global Positioning System (GPS) protocol at their last year of primary and their first year of secondary school. GPS data-points were overlaid with Geographical Information Systems (GIS) data using ArcGIS 10.1 software. Based on the GPS locations of individual data-points, we identified child's PA at home, school, local sports grounds, shopping centers, and other locations. Also, trips in active and passive transport were identified according to previously validated GPS speed-algorithms. Longitudinal multi-level linear mixed models were fitted adjusting for age, gender, meteorological circumstances, and the nested structure of days within children and children within schools. Outcome measures were minutes spent in light PA and moderate-to-vigorous PA, specified for the time-segments before school, during school, after school and weekend days. RESULTS:Total PA significantly declined from primary to secondary school. Although transport-related PA increased before- and during school, decreases were found for especially afterschool time spent at sports grounds and transport-related PA during weekends. CONCLUSIONS:This is the first study that demonstrated longitudinal changes of context- and domain-specific PA patterns in transition between primary and secondary school, based on device-assessed PA. Given the importance of this transition-period for the development of long-term PA patterns, results from this study warrant the development of evidence-based PA programs in this transition period, while acknowledging the integrative role of schools, parents, and afterschool sports providers. More specifically, the results underline the need to increase children's PA levels in primary schools, promote afterschool PA at secondary schools, and to prevent the drop-out in sports participation at secondary schools.

Project description:Even the best school physical education programs fall short of providing enough physical activity (PA) to meet students' PA guidelines thus increasing PA at other times throughout the school day could help students meet recommended PA levels. Unstructured leisure-time periods during the school day represent an opportunity to promote PA, particularly among students in underserved school districts. Between 2014 and 2018, we partnered with 14 elementary and 5 secondary schools in low-income Latino communities to increase students' leisure time moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA). Schools received consultation and technical assistance on their wellness policy, and some created wellness committees. Schools selected 1-2 PA/nutrition promotion activities for the academic year. Following the System for Observing Play and Leisure Activity in Youth protocol, we conducted a pre- vs. post- analysis of observations of school time student PA (levels of MVPA, energy expenditure, proportion of areas in which games and sports were prominent) in 4936 pre-intervention play areas and 4404 post-intervention areas before school, during lunch recess, and after school. We utilized linear and logistic regression analyses to test pre/post changes in these dependent variables using school area characteristics, period of observation, and temperature as covariates. Following our intervention, MVPA levels before school, during lunch recess, and after school increased significantly from 19.8% at baseline to 25.6% among elementary girls and from 25.4% to 33.2% among elementary boys. Decomposition of these effects suggested that the benefits were partially mediated by increased adult playground supervision. We did not observe any significant changes in PA levels among secondary school girls or boys. Our school-level intervention aimed at promoting PA was associated with modest but meaningful increases in leisure-time PA among elementary, but not secondary, school students. The effects were attributable in part to increased adult supervision on the playground.

Project description:BACKGROUND:Previous studies have already reported associations of media consumption and/or physical activity with school achievement. However, longitudinal studies investigating independent effects of physical activity and media consumption on school performance are sparse. The present study fills this research gap and, furthermore, assesses relationships of the type of secondary school with media consumption and physical activity. METHODS:The consumption of screen-based media (TV/video, game console, PC/internet, and mobile phone) and leisure physical activity (organized and non-organized) of 10 - to 17-year old adolescents participating in the LIFE Child study in Germany were related to their school grades in two major school subjects (Mathematics and German) and in Physical Education. In addition to a cross-sectional analysis at baseline (N = 850), a longitudinal analysis (N = 512) investigated the independent effects of these activities on the school grades achieved 12 months later. All associations were adjusted for age, gender, socio-economic status, year of data assessment, body-mass-index, and school grades at baseline. A further analysis investigated differences in the consumption of screen-based media and physical activity as a function of the type of secondary school (highest vs. lower secondary school). RESULTS:Adolescents of lower secondary schools reported a significantly higher consumption of TV/video and game consoles than adolescents attending the highest secondary school. Independently of the type of school, a better school performance in Mathematics was predicted by a lower consumption of computers/internet, and a better performance in Physical Education was predicted by a lower consumption of TV/video and a higher frequency of non-organized physical activity. However, the association between non-organized physical activity and subsequent grades in Physical Education was significant in girls only. CONCLUSION:The present results suggest that media consumption has a negative effect on school achievement, whereas physical activity has a positive effect, which, however, is restricted to the subject Physical Education. Future studies might explore the relationship between media consumption and school career, for example, the choice or change of the secondary school type, in more detail.
