The formation of symbiotic nodule cells in <i>Medicago truncatula</i> is driven by successive endoreduplication cycles and transcriptional reprogramming in different temporal waves including the activation of more than 600 cysteine-rich <i>NCR</i> genes expressed only in nodules.
