A hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite dataset.

ABSTRACT: Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) have been attracting a great deal of attention due to their versatility of electronic properties and fabrication methods. We prepare a dataset of 1,346 HOIPs, which features 16 organic cations, 3 group-IV cations and 4 halide anions. Using a combination of an atomic structure search method and density functional theory calculations, the optimized structures, the bandgap, the dielectric constant, and the relative energies of the HOIPs are uniformly prepared and validated by comparing with relevant experimental and/or theoretical data. We make the dataset available at Dryad Digital Repository, NoMaD Repository, and Khazana Repository (http://khazana.uconn.edu/), hoping that it could be useful for future data-mining efforts that can explore possible structure-property relationships and phenomenological models. Progressive extension of the dataset is expected as new organic cations become appropriate within the HOIP framework, and as additional properties are calculated for the new compounds found.

Hybrid Organic-Inorganic Perovskite Superstructures for Ultrapure Green Emissions.

Project description:All inorganic CsPbBr3 superstructures (SSs) have attracted much research interest due to their unique photophysical properties, such as their large emission red-shifts and super-radiant burst emissions. These properties are of particular interest in displays, lasers and photodetectors. Currently, the best-performing perovskite optoelectronic devices incorporate organic cations (methylammonium (MA), formamidinium (FA)), however, hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite SSs have not yet been investigated. This work is the first to report on the synthesis and photophysical characterization of APbBr3 (A = MA, FA, Cs) perovskite SSs using a facile ligand-assisted reprecipitation method. At higher concentrations, the hybrid organic-inorganic MA/FAPbBr3 nanocrystals self-assemble into SSs and produce red-shifted ultrapure green emissions, meeting the requirement of Rec. 2020 displays. We hope that this work will be seminal in advancing the exploration of perovskite SSs using mixed cation groups to further improve their optoelectronic applications.

Anomalous photovoltaic effect in organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells.

Project description:Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites (OIHPs) have been demonstrated to be highly successful photovoltaic materials yielding very-high-efficiency solar cells. We report the room temperature observation of an anomalous photovoltaic (APV) effect in lateral structure OIHP devices manifested by the device's open-circuit voltage (VOC) that is much larger than the bandgap of OIHPs. The persistent VOC is proportional to the electrode spacing, resembling that of ferroelectric photovoltaic devices. However, the APV effect in OIHP devices is not caused by ferroelectricity. The APV effect can be explained by the formation of tunneling junctions randomly dispersed in the polycrystalline films, which allows the accumulation of photovoltage at a macroscopic level. The formation of internal tunneling junctions as a result of ion migration is visualized with Kelvin probe force microscopy scanning. This observation points out a new avenue for the formation of large and continuously tunable VOC without being limited by the materials' bandgap.

Hybrid Organic-Inorganic Perovskite Memory with Long-Term Stability in Air.

Project description:Organic-inorganic perovskite materials have attracted extensive attention for wide range of applications such as solar cells, photo detectors, and memory devices. However, the lack of stability in ambient condition prevented the perovskite materials from applying to practical applications. Here, we demonstrate resistive switching memory devices based on organic-inorganic perovskite (CH3NH3PbI3) that have been passivated using thin metal-oxide-layers. CH3NH3PbI3-based memory devices with a solution-processed ZnO passivation layer retain low-voltage operation and, on/off current ratio for more than 30 days in air. Passivation with atomic-layer-deposited (ALD) AlOx is also demonstrated. The resistive switching memory devices with an ALD AlOx passivation layer maintained reliable resistive switching for 30 d in ambient condition, but devices without the passivation layer degraded rapidly and did not show memory properties after 3 d. These results suggest that encapsulation with thin metal-oxide layers is easy and commercially-viable methods to fabricate practical memory devices, and has potential to realize memory devices with long-term stability and reliable, reproducible programmable memory characteristics.

Nanoscale mapping of chemical composition in organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite films.

Project description:Lead-based organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite (OIHP) solar cells can attain efficiencies over 20%. However, the impact of ion mobility and/or organic depletion, structural changes, and segregation under operating conditions urge for decisive and more accurate investigations. Hence, the development of analytical tools for accessing the grain-to-grain OIHP chemistry is of great relevance. Here, we used synchrotron infrared nanospectroscopy (nano-FTIR) to map individual nanograins in OIHP films. Our results reveal a spatial heterogeneity of the vibrational activity associated to the nanoscale chemical diversity of isolated grains. It was possible to map the chemistry of individual grains in CsFAMA [Cs0.05FA0.79MA0.16Pb(I0.83Br0.17)3] and FAMA [FA0.83MA0.17Pb(I0.83Br0.17)3] films, with information on their local composition. Nanograins with stronger nano-FTIR activity in CsFAMA and FAMA films can be assigned to PbI2 and hexagonal polytype phases, respectively. The analysis herein can be extended to any OIHP films where organic cation depletion/accumulation can be used as a chemical label to study composition.

An Emerging Visible-Light Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Perovskite for Photocatalytic Applications.

Project description:The development of visible-light active photocatalysts is a current challenge especially energy and environmental-related fields. Herein, methylammonium lead iodide perovskite (MAIPb) was chosen as the novel semiconductor material for its ability of absorbing visible-light. An easily reproducible and efficient method was employed to synthesize the as-mentioned material. The sample was characterized by various techniques and has been used as visible-light photocatalyst for degradation of two model pollutants: rhodamine B (RhB) and methylene-blue (MB). The photo-degradation of RhB was found to achieve about 65% after 180 min of treatment. Moreover, the efficiency was enhanced to 100% by assisting the process with a small amount of H2O2. The visible-light activity of the photocatalyst was attributed to its ability to absorb light as well as to enhance separation of photogenerated carriers. The main outcome of the present work is the investigation of a hybrid perovskite as photocatalyst for wastewater treatment.

Bioinspired stability enhancement in deuterium-substituted organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells

Project description:Abstract In hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs), the reaction of hydrogens (H) located in the amino group of the organic A-site cations with their neighboring halides plays a central role in degradation. Inspired by the retarded biological activities of cells in heavy water, we replaced the light H atom with its abundant, twice-as-heavy, nonradioactive isotope, deuterium (D) to hamper the motion of H. This D substitution retarded the formation kinetics of the detrimental H halides in Pb-based PSCs, as well as the H bond-mediated oxidation of Sn2+ in Sn–Pb-based narrow-bandgap PSCs, evidenced by accelerated stability studies. A computational study indicated that the zero point energy of D-based formamidinium (FA) is lower than that of pristine FA. In addition, the smaller increase in entropy in D-based FA than in pristine FA accounts for the increased formation free energy of the Sn2+ vacancies, which leads to the retarded oxidation kinetics of Sn2+. In this study, we show that substituting active H with D in organic cations is an effective way to enhance the stability of PSCs without sacrificing photovoltaic (PV) performance. This approach is also adaptable to other stabilizing methods.

The dynamics of methylammonium ions in hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite solar cells.

Project description:Methylammonium lead iodide perovskite can make high-efficiency solar cells, which also show an unexplained photocurrent hysteresis dependent on the device-poling history. Here we report quasielastic neutron scattering measurements showing that dipolar CH3NH3(+) ions reorientate between the faces, corners or edges of the pseudo-cubic lattice cages in CH3NH3PbI3 crystals with a room temperature residence time of ∼14 ps. Free rotation, π-flips and ionic diffusion are ruled out within a 1-200-ps time window. Monte Carlo simulations of interacting CH3NH3(+) dipoles realigning within a 3D lattice suggest that the scattering measurements may be explained by the stabilization of CH3NH3(+) in either antiferroelectric or ferroelectric domains. Collective realignment of CH3NH3(+) to screen a device's built-in potential could reduce photovoltaic performance. However, we estimate the timescale for a domain wall to traverse a typical device to be ∼0.1-1 ms, faster than most observed hysteresis.

Pressure-Induced Broadband Emission of 2D Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Perovskite (C6H5C2H4NH3)2PbBr4.

Project description:2D Ruddlesden-Popper halide perovskites, which incorporate hydrophobic organic interlayers to considerably improve environmental stability and optical properties diversity, have attracted substantial research attention for optoelectronic applications. The burgeoning broad emission arising from exciton self-trapping of 2D perovskites shows a strong dependence on a deformable structure. Here, the pressure-induced broadband emission of layered (001) Pb-Br perovskite with a large Stokes shift in the visible region is observed by finely improving lattice distortion to increase exciton-phonon coupling under hydrostatic pressure. Band gap narrows ≈0.5 eV under modest pressure, mainly due to the large compressibility of the orientational organic layer, confirming that the bulky organic cations notably influence the structure and, in turn, the various properties of materials. Sequential amorphization of the organic and inorganic layer is confirmed by high pressure Raman and X-ray diffraction measurements, suggesting the particularity of layered crystal structures. The mechanism constructed here offers a new route for tuning the optical properties of 2D perovskites.

Electric Bias Induced Degradation in Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes.

Project description:For organic-inorganic perovskite to be considered as the most promising materials for light emitting diodes and solar cell applications, the active materials must be proven to be stable under various conditions, such as ambient environment, heat and electrical bias. Understanding the degradation process in organic-inorganic perovskite light emitting diodes (PeLEDs) is important to improve the stability and the performance of the device. We revealed that electrical bias can greatly influence the luminance and external quantum efficiency of PeLEDs. It was found that device performance could be improved under low voltage bias with short operation time, and decreased with continuous operation. The degradation of perovskite film under high electrical bias leads to the decrease of device performance. Variations in the absorption, morphology and element distribution of perovskite films under different electrical bias revealed that organic-inorganic perovskites are unstable at high electrical bias. We bring new insights in the PeLEDs which are crucial for improving the stability.

Solution-Processed Large-Area Organic/Inorganic Hybrid Antireflective Films for Perovskite Solar Cell.

Project description:In recent years, organic/inorganic hybrid materials have attracted much attention in the field of multilayer antireflection films because of their excellent optical properties. In this paper, the organic/inorganic nanocomposite was prepared from polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and titanium (IV) isopropoxide (TTIP). The hybrid material has a wide, tunable window of refractive index, i.e., 1.65-1.95, at a wavelength of 550 nm. The atomic force microscope (AFM) results of the hybrid films show the lowest root-mean-square surface roughness of 2.7 Å and a low haze of 0.23%, indicating that the films have good potential for optical applications. The double-sided antireflection films (10 × 10 cm2) with one side of hybrid nanocomposite/cellulose acetate and the other side of hybrid nanocomposite /polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) achieved high transmittances of 98% and 99.3%, respectively. After 240 days of aging testing, the hybrid solution and the antireflective film remained stable with almost no attenuation. Furthermore, the application of the antireflection films in perovskite solar cell modules increased the power conversion efficiency from 16.57% to 17.25%.
