Star-Shaped Conjugated Systems

ABSTRACT: The present review deals with the preparation and the properties of star-shaped conjugated compounds. Three, four or six conjugated arms are attached to cross-conjugated cores, which consist of single atoms (B, C+, N), benzene or azine rings or polycyclic ring systems, as for example triphenylene or tristriazolotriazine. Many of these shape-persistent [n]star compounds tend to ?-stacking and self-organization, and exhibit interesting properties in materials science: Linear and non-linear optics, electrical conductivity, electroluminescence, formation of liquid crystalline phases, etc.

Synthesis and properties of novel star-shaped oligofluorene conjugated systems with BODIPY cores.

Project description:Star-shaped conjugated systems with varying oligofluorene arm length and substitution patterns of the central BODIPY core have been synthesised, leading to two families of compounds, T-B1-T-B4 and Y-B1-Y-B4, with T- and Y-shaped motifs, respectively. Thermal stability, cyclic voltammetry, absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy of each member of these two families were studied in order to determine their suitability as emissive materials in photonic applications.

Star-shaped and linear ?-conjugated oligomers consisting of a tetrathienoanthracene core and multiple diketopyrrolopyrrole arms for organic solar cells.

Project description:Solution-processable star-shaped and linear ?-conjugated oligomers consisting of an electron-donating tetrathienoanthracene (TTA) core and electron-accepting diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) arms, namely, TTA-DPP4 and TTA-DPP2, were designed and synthesized. Based on density functional theory calculations, the star-shaped TTA-DPP4 has a larger oscillator strength than the linear TTA-DPP2, and consequently, better photoabsorption property over a wide range of visible wavelengths. The photovoltaic properties of organic solar cells based on TTA-DPP4 and TTA-DPP2 with a fullerene derivative were evaluated by varying the thickness of the bulk heterojunction active layer. As a result of the enhanced visible absorption properties of the star-shaped ?-conjugated structure, better photovoltaic performances were obtained with relatively thin active layers (40-60 nm).

Theoretical Investigations of the Photophysical Properties of Star-Shaped ?-Conjugated Molecules with Triarylboron Unit for Organic Light-Emitting Diodes Applications.

Project description:The density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) methodologies have been applied to explore on a series of star-shaped ?-conjugated organoboron systems for organic light-emitting diode (OLED) materials. The compounds under investigation consist of benzene as ?-bridge and different core units and triarylboron end groups. Their geometry structures, frontier molecular orbital (FMO) energies, absorption and fluorescence spectra, and charge transport properties have been investigated systematically. It turned out that the FMO energy levels, the band gaps, and reorganization energies optical are affected by the introduction of different core units and triarylboron end groups. The results suggest that the designed compounds are expected to be promising candidates for luminescent materials. Furthermore, they can also serve as hole and/or electron transport materials for OLEDs.

Free Surface Relaxations of Star-Shaped Polymer Films.

Project description:The surface relaxation dynamics of supported star-shaped polymer thin films are shown to be slower than the bulk, persisting up to temperatures at least 50 K above the bulk glass transition temperature T_{g}^{bulk}. This behavior, exhibited by star-shaped polystyrenes with functionality f=8 arms and molecular weights per arm M_{arm}<M_{e} (M_{e} is the entanglement molecular weight), is shown by molecular dynamics simulations to be associated with a preferential localization of these macromolecules at the free surface. This new phenomenon is in notable contrast to that of linear-chain polymer thin film systems, where the surface relaxations are enhanced in relation to the bulk; this enhancement persists only for a limited temperature range above the bulk T_{g}^{bulk}. Evidence of the slow surface dynamics, compared to the bulk, for temperatures well above T_{g} and at length and time scales not associated with the glass transition has not previously been reported for polymers.

Star-Shaped Crosslinker for Multifunctional Shape Memory Polyurethane.

Project description:Star-shaped cyclophosphazene (ACP) was employed as covalent crosslinker to form a rigid segment in polyurethanes network, to enhance the mechanical performance and to add extra flame retardant property. The effects of different ACP contents on the shape memory ability and fire resistance performance of polyurethane (PU) were studied. Tensile tests suggested high flexibility of the PUs with the maximum elongation-at-break of 161.59%. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) indicated good shape recovery ratio of 72.58% after more than three repeated cycles. Under thermal treatment, the temporary shape could recover to its original state in 10 s. The peak heat release rate (pHRR), total heat released (THR) and temperature at pHRR (Tp) of flame-retardant shape memory polyurethane (FSPU) by micro-combustion calorimeter (MCC) was as low as 183.2 W/g, 21.4 KJ/g, 330.8 °C respectively, suggesting good inherent fire-resistant performance. As amine-containing crosslinkers are one of the most common building units in thermosetting polymers, we anticipate that our finding will have significant benefits beyond shape memory and fire-resistance.

Star-Shaped and Linear POSS-Polylactide Hybrid Copolymers.

Project description:Novel octakis-2[(6-hydroxyhexyl)thio]ethyl-octasilsesquioxane (POSS-S-OH) as well as heptaisobutyl-2[(6-hydroxyhexyl)thio]ethyl-octasilsesquioxane (iBu-POSS-S-OH) were synthesized. POSS structures, bearing both types of groups i.e., 2[(6-hydroxyhexyl)thio]ethyl and the vinyl ones, pendant from the octahedral cage are also described. The synthetic pathway involved thiol-ene click reaction of 6-mercapto-1-hexanol (MCH) to octavinyloctasilsesquioxane (POSS-Vi), and heptaisobutylvinyloctasilsesquioxane (iBu-POSS-Vi), in the presence of 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile. The functionalized silsesquioxane cages of regular octahedral structure were used further as initiators for ring opening polymerization of L,L-dilactide, catalyzed by tin (II) 2-ethylhexanoate. The polymerization afforded biodegradable hybrid star shape and linear systems with an octasilsesquioxane cage as a core, bearing polylactide arm(s).

Multiarm Star-Shaped Polydimethylsiloxanes with a Dendritic Branching Center.

Project description:New multiarm stars have been synthesized based on polylithium derivatives of high-generation carbosilane dendrimers. In the synthesis of multiarm stars based on the eighth-generation dendrimer, steric hindrances were observed even during the synthesis of a polylithium initiator. Subsequently, this led to chain transfer reactions between growing arms, as well as other side effects. As a result, dense nanogel formations with a higher tendency of ordering than in classical objects of this type were isolated from the reaction mixture. The study of the rheology of multiarm stars based on sixth-generation dendrimers made it possible to determine the activation energies of viscous flow in these objects, which makes it possible to consider them as objects with a macromolecular nature and a reptation flow mechanism.

Self-assembly of SNARE fusion proteins into star-shaped oligomers.

Project description:Three evolutionarily conserved proteins known as SNAREs (soluble N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive fusion protein attachment protein receptors) mediate exocytosis from single cell eukaryotes to neurons. Among neuronal SNAREs, syntaxin and SNAP-25 (synaptosome-associated protein of 25 kDa) reside on the plasma membrane, whereas synaptobrevin resides on synaptic vesicles prior to fusion. The SNARE motifs of the three proteins form a helical bundle which probably drives membrane fusion. Since studies in vivo suggested an importance for multiple SNARE complexes in the fusion process, and models appeared in the literature with large numbers of SNARE bundles executing the fusion process, we analysed the quaternary structure of the full-length native SNARE complexes in detail. By employing a preparative immunoaffinity procedure we isolated all of the SNARE complexes from brain, and have shown by size-exclusion chromatography and negative stain electron microscopy that they exist as approx. 30 nm particles containing, most frequently, 3 or 4 bundles emanating from their centre. Using highly purified, individual, full-length SNAREs we demonstrated that the oligomerization of SNAREs into star-shaped particles with 3 to 4 bundles is an intrinsic property of these proteins and is not dependent on other proteins, as previously hypothesized. The average number of the SNARE bundles in the isolated fusion particles corresponds well with the co-operativity observed in calcium-triggered neuronal exocytosis.

Synthesis and Conformational Characteristics of Thermosensitive Star-Shaped Six-Arm Polypeptoids.

Project description:Star-shaped six-arm poly-2-alkyl-2-oxazine and poly-2-alkyl-2-oxazoline with hexaaza [26]orthoparacyclophane derivative core were synthesized successfully using cationic ring-opening polymerization. Conformational behavior of prepared polymer stars were investigated by the methods of molecular hydrodynamics and optics in molecular dispersed solutions. It was shown that conformation characteristics of star-shaped polypeptoids depends on arm length, while the chemical structure weakly affects the behavior of the studied polymers in solutions. This behavior is caused by the close equilibrium rigidity of arms. The star-shaped polypeptoids have relatively high intramolecular density. All synthesized stars exhibit LCST behavior. Phase separation temperature depends on arm structure. It is lower for poly-2-alkyl-2-oxazines, monomer units of which contains one methylene group more than monomers of poly-2-alkyl-2-oxazoline.

Isomerically Pure Star-Shaped Triphenylene-Perylene Hybrids Involving Highly Extended ?-Conjugation.

Project description:The synthesis and characterization of a new type of a highly conjugated heterocyclic ?-chromophore, consisting of a central triphenylene core fused with three perylene monoimide units (star-shaped molecules), is described. By judicious bay functionalization with tert-butylphenoxy substituents, aggregation was completely prevented by using 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane, allowing for a straightforward purification and, for the very first time, the complete separation of the constitutional isomers by HPLC. Both isomers can be easily distinguished by means of several conventional spectroscopic techniques. Furthermore, we have illustrated the absence of supramolecular aggregates and enhanced processability by noncovalent functionalization of graphene substrates, showing an outstanding homogeneity and demonstrating a different doping behavior in both isomers, making it possible to distinguish them by Raman spectroscopy.
