Solvatochromic Effects on the Absorption Spectrum of 2-Thiocytosine.

ABSTRACT: The solvatochromic effects of six different solvents on the UV absorption spectrum of 2-thiocytosine have been studied by a combination of experimental and theoretical techniques. The steady-state absorption spectra show significant shifts of the absorption bands, where in more polar solvents the first absorption maximum shifts to higher transition energies and the second maximum to lower energies. The observed solvatochromic shifts have been rationalized using three popular solvatochromic scales and with high-level multireference quantum chemistry calculations including implicit and explicit solvent effects. It has been found that the dipole moments of the excited states account for some general shifts in the excitation energies, whereas the explicit solvent interactions explain the differences in the spectra recorded in the different solvents.

Donor-acceptor substituted phenylethynyltriphenylenes - excited state intramolecular charge transfer, solvatochromic absorption and fluorescence emission.

Project description:Several 2-(phenylethynyl)triphenylene derivatives bearing electron donor and acceptor substituents on the phenyl rings have been synthesized. The absorption and fluorescence emission properties of these molecules have been studied in solvents of different polarity. For a given derivative, solvent polarity had minimal effect on the absorption maxima. However, for a given solvent the absorption maxima red shifted with increasing conjugation of the substituent. The fluorescence emission of these derivatives was very sensitive to solvent polarity. In the presence of strongly electron withdrawing (-CN) and strongly electron donating (-NMe₂) substituents large Stokes shifts (up to 130 nm, 7828 cm⁻¹) were observed in DMSO. In the presence of carbonyl substituents (-COMe and -COPh), the largest Stokes shift (140 nm, 8163 cm⁻¹) was observed in ethanol. Linear correlation was observed for the Stokes shifts in a Lippert-Mataga plot. Linear correlation of Stokes shift was also observed with E(T)(30) scale for protic and aprotic solvents but with different slopes. These results indicate that the fluorescence emission arises from excited state intramolecular charge transfer in these molecules where the triphenylene chromophore acts either as a donor or as an acceptor depending upon the nature of the substituent on the phenyl ring. HOMO-LUMO energy gaps have been estimated from the electrochemical and spectral data for these derivatives. The HOMO and LUMO surfaces were obtained from DFT calculations.

Regulating the absorption spectrum of polydopamine.

Project description:Polydopamine (PDA) has been increasingly exploited as an advanced functional material, and its emergent light absorption property plays a crucial role in determining various utilizations. However, the rational design and efficient regulation of PDA absorption property remain a challenge due to the complex structure within PDA. In this work, we propose a facile method to regulate the light absorption behaviors of PDA by constructing donor-acceptor pairs within the microstructures through the chemical connections between indoledihydroxy/indolequinone and their oligomers with 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl moiety. The detailed structural and spectral analysis, as well as the density functional theory simulation, further confirms the existence of donor-acceptor molecular pair structures, which could decrease the energy bandgap and increase the electron delocalization for enhancing light absorption across a broad spectrum. These rationally designed PDA nanoparticles with tunable absorption properties also show improved total photothermal effect and demonstrate excellent performances in solar desalination.

Electronic Absorption Spectra from MM and ab initio QM/MM Molecular Dynamics: Environmental Effects on the Absorption Spectrum of Photoactive Yellow Protein.

Project description:We describe a new interface of the GPU parallelized TeraChem electronic structure package and the Amber molecular dynamics package for quantum mechanical (QM) and mixed QM and molecular mechanical (MM) molecular dynamics simulations. This QM/MM interface is used for computation of the absorption spectra of the photoactive yellow protein (PYP) chromophore in vacuum, aqueous solution, and protein environments. The computed excitation energies of PYP require a very large QM region (hundreds of atoms) covalently bonded to the chromophore in order to achieve agreement with calculations that treat the entire protein quantum mechanically. We also show that 40 or more surrounding water molecules must be included in the QM region in order to obtain converged excitation energies of the solvated PYP chromophore. These results indicate that large QM regions (with hundreds of atoms) are a necessity in QM/MM calculations.

Plant Growth Absorption Spectrum Mimicking Light Sources.

Project description:Plant factories have attracted increasing attention because they can produce fresh fruits and vegetables free from pesticides in all weather. However, the emission spectra from current light sources significantly mismatch the spectra absorbed by plants. We demonstrate a concept of using multiple broad-band as well as narrow-band solid-state lighting technologies to design plant-growth light sources. Take an organic light-emitting diode (OLED), for example; the resulting light source shows an 84% resemblance with the photosynthetic action spectrum as a twin-peak blue dye and a diffused mono-peak red dye are employed. This OLED can also show a greater than 90% resemblance as an additional deeper red emitter is added. For a typical LED, the resemblance can be improved to 91% if two additional blue and red LEDs are incorporated. The approach may facilitate either an ideal use of the energy applied for plant growth and/or the design of better light sources for growing different plants.

Solvatochromic covalent organic frameworks.

Project description:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are an emerging class of highly tuneable crystalline, porous materials. Here we report the first COFs that change their electronic structure reversibly depending on the surrounding atmosphere. These COFs can act as solid-state supramolecular solvatochromic sensors that show a strong colour change when exposed to humidity or solvent vapours, dependent on vapour concentration and solvent polarity. The excellent accessibility of the pores in vertically oriented films results in ultrafast response times below 200 ms, outperforming commercially available humidity sensors by more than an order of magnitude. Employing a solvatochromic COF film as a vapour-sensitive light filter, we demonstrate a fast humidity sensor with full reversibility and stability over at least 4000 cycles. Considering their immense chemical diversity and modular design, COFs with fine-tuned solvatochromic properties could broaden the range of possible applications for these materials in sensing and optoelectronics.

Effective photoacoustic absorption spectrum for collagen-based tissue imaging.

Project description:SIGNIFICANCE:Collagen is a basic component of many tissues such as tendons, muscles, and skin, and its imaging helps diagnose and monitor treatments in a variety of fields, including orthopedics. However, due to the overlapping peaks of the absorption spectrum with water in the short-wave infrared region (SWIR), it is difficult to select an optimal wavelength and obtain the photoacoustic (PA) image for collagen-based tissues. Therefore, an additional approach to selecting the proper wavelength is needed. AIM:The aim of this study is to derive an effective PA absorption spectrum of collagen to select the optimal wavelength for high-sensitive PA imaging (PAI). APPROACH:We measure the absorption spectrum by acquiring the PA signal from various collagen-based samples. To derive an effective PA absorption spectrum in the SWIR band, the following two parameters should be considered: (1) the laser excitation for generating the PA signal and (2) the absorption spectrum for water in the SWIR band. This molecular intrinsic property suggests the optimal wavelength for high-sensitive PAI of collagen-based samples. RESULTS:PA absorption spectral peaks of collagen were found at wavelengths of 1200, 1550, and 1700 nm. Thereby, the PA signal increased by up to five times compared with the wavelength commonly used in collagen PAI. We applied a pulsed fiber laser with a center wavelength of 1560 nm, and the three-dimensional PA image of a collagen patch was obtained. CONCLUSIONS:The effective PA absorption spectrum contributes to the improvement of the PA image sensitivity by presenting the optimal wavelength of the target samples.

Protein simulations: the absorption spectrum of barnase point mutants.

Project description:The near-UV absorption spectra of barnase double-point mutants are calculated using a combination of molecular dynamics and ab initio techniques. The atoms of the fluorescent probes are placed in a cloud of point charges, generated by molecular dynamics simulations. Ab initio calculations (CASPT2) are performed on these systems. Three molecular dynamics packages are compared-Amber5.0, CHARMM-c27b1, and GROMOS96-using indole as the fluorescent probe. It was found that calculated absorption spectra reproduce experimental values very well, provided detailed charge cloud descriptions are included. These calculations further sustain the hypothesis that different tryptophan rotamers can be present in proteins. Molecular dynamics calculations of the double-point mutants also point to the structural effect of counter ions.

Solvent effects on the structure-property relationship of anticonvulsant hydantoin derivatives: A solvatochromic analysis.

Project description:Considering the pharmaceutical importance of hydantoins, a set of 25 derivatives of phenytoin, nirvanol and 5-methyl-5-phenylhydantoin, the lipophilicities of which were gradually increased by the introduction of different alkyl, cycloalkyl and alkenyl groups in position N3, was synthesized. Their properties under consideration were either estimated empirically, by UV/Vis spectroscopy, or calculated using established medicinal chemistry software. The UV absorption spectra of the investigated compounds were recorded in the region from 200 to 400 nm, in selected solvents of different polarities. The effects of solvent dipolarity/polarizability and solvent-solute hydrogen bonding interactions were analyzed by means of the linear solvation energy relationship (LSER) concept proposed by Kamlet and Taft. Furthermore, the relationships between solvent-solute interactions and selected structural features of the solutes, which are believed to markedly affect the processes of absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion and toxicity (ADMETox), were discussed. Satisfactory correlations were found between hydrogen bonding properties and solute size and the in silico calculated bioactivity descriptors, in particular %Abs. (human intestinal absorption), log BB (blood-brain barrier permeation) and log kA (protein binding affinities) parameters. In view of the results of this study, the investigated hydantoin derivatives met the pharmacokinetic criteria for pre-selection as drug candidates and qualified them for the pharmacodynamic phase of antiepileptic drug development.

Solvatochromic effect in absorption and emission spectra of star-shaped bipolar derivatives of 1,3,5-triazine and carbazole. A time-dependent density functional study.

Project description:A series of three star-shaped compounds containing both donor (carbazole) and acceptor (2,4,6-triphenyl-1,3,5-triazine) moieties linked through various linking bridges was studied theoretically at the linear response TD-DFT level of theory to describe their absorption and fluorescence spectra. The concept of a localized charge-transfer excited state has been applied successfully to explain the observed strong solvatochromic effect in the emission spectra of the studied molecules, which can be utilized for the fabrication of color tunable solution-processable OLEDs. The concept is in particularly applicable to donor-acceptor species with a C 3 symmetry point group where the static dipole moment changes dramatically upon electronic excitation. An important peculiarity of the studied molecules is that they are characterized by non-zero values of the HOMO and LUMO orbitals in the same common part of molecular space that provides a large electric dipole transition moment for both light absorption and emission. Zebrafish ultraviolet visual pigment: absorption spectrum, sequence, and localization.

Project description:In many vertebrates, UV-sensitive photoreceptors have been identified by microspectrophotometry and UV-visual sensitivity has been identified by behavioral studies, but as yet no vertebrate UV-sensitive pigment gene has been isolated. We have sequenced a cDNA clone that hybridizes to short single cone cells in the zebrafish (Brachydanio rerio). These cells, which make up 25% of the cone population in zebrafish retinae, are UV-sensitive (lambda max approximately 360 nm). The visual pigment encoded by this gene is unusual in that its amino acid sequence is more homologous to the rod pigment rhodopsin (up to 89%) than to other cone pigments (35-83%). Like all other vertebrate visual pigments, it contains a lysine residue at position 296, the presumptive retinal binding site, and a glutamate residue at position 113. However, it is unique in possessing a lysine residue at position 126, which may account for the UV-sensitivity of the pigment.
