Marriage-Market Constraints and Mate-Selection Behavior: Racial, Ethnic, and Gender Differences in Intermarriage.

ABSTRACT: Despite theoretical consensus that marriage markets constrain mate selection behavior, few studies directly evaluate how local marriage market conditions influence intermarriage patterns. Using data from the American Community Survey, we examine what aspects of marriage markets influence mate selection; assess whether the associations between marriage market conditions and intermarriage are uniform by gender and across pan-ethnic groups; and investigate the extent to which marriage market conditions account for group differences in intermarriage patterns. Relative group size is the most salient and consistent determinant of intermarriage patterns across pan-ethnic groups and by gender. Marriage market constraints typically explain a larger share of pan-ethnic differences in intermarriage rates than individual traits, suggesting that scarcity of co-ethnic partners is a key reason behind decisions to intermarry. When faced with market constraints, men are more willing or more successful than women in crossing racial and ethnic boundaries in marriage.

Project description:BackgroundDisordered eating behaviors (DEB) are highly prevalent and are associated with negative long-term health outcomes. Extant research on DEB prevalence trajectories has predominantly focused on white women, thereby lacking both gender and ethnic/racial diversity, which may lead to preventive interventions that are not optimally timed for socially minoritized groups. The purpose of this study was to identify patterns in DEB trajectories from adolescence to adulthood across intersecting gender and ethnic/racial identities.MethodsParticipants (n = 1314) were from Project EAT (Eating and Activity in Teens and Young Adults), a population-based sample in the United States. Unhealthy weight control behaviors and binge eating were assessed across four waves at 5-year intervals. Gender-stratified generalized estimating equations (GEE) analyses were applied to examine ethnic/racial and gender differences in the prevalence trajectories of two forms of DEB (unhealthy weight control behaviors and binge eating).ResultsHispanic/Latina young women reported heightened prevalence of unhealthy weight control behaviors and binge eating during adolescence (82.4% and 31.1%) relative to women with other ethnic/racial identities (44-70.2% and 8.8-18.2%) at any other developmental time point. Black/African American women reported linear increases in unhealthy weight control behaviors from adolescence (46.6%) to adulthood (65.5%), with nearly 20% greater prevalence relative to white women (44.6%) during adulthood. Among men, prevalence of unhealthy weight control behaviors was higher among Hispanic/Latinos (60.7-68.0%) and Asian Americans (41.9-56.7%) relative to Black/African American (24.6-36.9%) and white men (25.7-34.9%). Similarly, Hispanic/Latino young men reported up to ten or more times higher prevalence of binge eating during adolescence (22.8%) and adulthood (26.8%) relative to men from other ethnic/racial identities at any other time point (1.7-12.3%).ConclusionsEthnic/racial disparities in DEB prevalence vary across development, DEB subtype, and by gender. Targeted preventive interventions, or interventions that address these different trajectories, that are optimally timed may reduce these disparities.

Project description:BackgroundIn 2020, primary care practices adopted telemedicine as an alternative to in-person visits. Little is known about whether access to telemedicine was equitable, especially among older patients. Our objectives were to (1) examine older adults' use of telemedicine versus in-person primary care visits and (2) compare hospitalization for ambulatory care sensitive conditions (ACSCs) between the groups.MethodsIn this retrospective cross-sectional study of 17,103 patients aged ≥65 years seen at 32 clinics in the Mid-Atlantic, primary care patients were classified into two groups-telemedicine versus in person-based on the first visit between March and May 2020 and followed up for 14 days. Using multivariable logistic regression, we measured the odds of being seen via telemedicine versus in person as a function of patient demographics, comorbidities, and week of study period. We then measured the odds of ACSC hospitalization by visit modality.ResultsMean age was 75.1 years (SD, 7.5), 60.6% of patients were female, 64.6% white, 28.1% black, and 2.0% Hispanic. Overall, 60.3% of patients accessed primary care via telemedicine. Black (vs. white) patients had higher odds of using telemedicine (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 1.30; 95% CI, 1.14-1.47) and Hispanic (vs. not Hispanic) patients had lower odds (aOR, 0.63; 95% CI, 0.42-0.92). Compared with the in-person group, patients in the telemedicine group had lower odds of ACSC hospitalization (aOR, 0.78; 95% CI, 0.61-1.00). Among patients who used telemedicine, black patients had 1.43 higher odds of ACSC hospitalization (95% CI, 1.02-2.01) compared with white patients. Patients aged 85 or older seen via telemedicine had higher odds of an ACSC hospitalization (aOR, 1.60; 95% CI, 1.03-2.47) compared with patients aged 65-74.ConclusionsThese findings support the use of telemedicine for primary care access for older adults. However, the observed disparities highlight the need to improve care quality and equity regardless of visit modality.
