Pore Narrowing of Mesoporous Silica Materials.

ABSTRACT: To use mesoporous silicas as low-k materials, the pore entrances must be really small to avoid diffusion of metals that can increase the dielectric constant of the low-k dielectric. In this paper we present a new method to narrow the pores of mesoporous materials through grafting of a cyclic-bridged organosilane precursor. As mesoporous material, the well-studied MCM-41 powder was selected to allow an easy characterization of the grafting reactions. Firstly, the successful grafting of the cyclic-bridged organosilane precursor on MCM-41 is presented. Secondly, it is demonstrated that pore narrowing can be obtained without losing porosity by removing the porogen template after grafting. The remaining silanols in the pores can then be end-capped with hexamethyl disilazane (HMDS) to make the material completely hydrophobic. Finally, we applied the pore narrowing method on organosilica films to prove that this method is also successful on existing low-k materials.

Immobilization of Metronidazole on Mesoporous Silica Materials.

Project description:Metronidazole (MTZ) is a widely used drug, but due to its many side effects, there is a growing trend today to use a minimum dose while maintaining high efficacy. One way to meet this demand is to reduce the size of the drug particles. A relatively new method of size reduction is attaching the drug molecules to a mesoporous carrier. In this paper, we studied the fixation of MTZ molecules on mesoporous silica carriers. The drug was immobilized on two mesoporous silica materials (Syloid, SBA-15) with the use of a variety of immersion techniques and solvents. The immobilized drug was subjected to physicochemical examinations (e.g., SEM, XPS, XRD, nitrogen uptake, DSC) and dissolution studies. A significantly higher immobilization was attained on SBA-15 than on a Syloid carrier. Among the processing parameters, the type of MTZ solvent had the highest influence on immobilization. Ultrasonic agitation had a lower but still significant impact, while the concentration of MTZ in the solution made no difference. Under optimal conditions, with the application of an ethyl acetate solution, the surface coverage on SBA-15 reached as much as 91%. The immobilized MTZ exhibited a ca. 10% faster dissolution rate as compared to the pure micron-sized drug particles.

Highly aminated mesoporous silica nanoparticles with cubic pore structure.

Project description:Mesoporous silica with cubic symmetry has attracted interest from researchers for some time. Here, we present the room temperature synthesis of mesoporous silica nanoparticles possessing cubic Pm3n symmetry with very high molar ratios (>50%) of 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane. The synthesis is robust allowing, for example, co-condensation of organic dyes without loss of structure. By means of pore expander molecules, the pore size can be enlarged from 2.7 to 5 nm, while particle size decreases. Adding pore expander and co-condensing fluorescent dyes in the same synthesis reduces average particle size further down to 100 nm. After PEGylation, such fluorescent aminated mesoporous silica nanoparticles are spontaneously taken up by cells as demonstrated by fluorescence microscopy.

Effects of mesoporous silica particle size and pore structure on the performance of polymer-mesoporous silica mixed matrix membranes.

Project description:The fabrication of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) has been regarded as an effective and economic approach to enhance the gas permeability and selectivity properties of conventional polymeric membranes for gas separation applications. However, the poor compatibility between polymeric matrix and inorganic filler in MMMs could lead to the generation of interfacial defects resulting in reduced gas selectivity. In this work, with the aim of studying the effect of particle size and pore structure of the filler on the performance of the resultant MMMs, nano/micro sized spherical mesoporous silicas with 2D/3D pore structure (MCM-41 and MCM-48) were synthesized and selected as fillers for the preparation of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based MMMs. The separation properties of the membranes prepared were characterized by permeability measurements for nitrogen and organic vapors (C3H6 and n-C4H10). Compared with microsized particles, nanosized fillers have better dispersion in the polymer matrix which could minimize the formation of non-selective microvoids around the particles, leading to higher vapor/N2 ideal selectivities of the MMMs, even at the high loading (15 wt%). Moreover, due to the conventional random packing orientation of the particles in the polymer, vapor permeation was severely hindered in the MMMs fabricated from mesoporous silica with 2D pore channels. The interface morphologies and gas diffusion paths in the MMMs have also been proposed. With an optimum loading of nanosized MCM-48 (3D pore structure), the vapor permeabilities and vapor/N2 ideal selectivities of the MMMs were shown to increase simultaneously, compared with the neat polymer membrane.

Size-selective pH-operated megagates on mesoporous silica materials.

Project description:pH-responsive megagates have been fabricated around mesoporous silica material SBA-15 in order to mechanize the mesopores. These megagates remain closed in neutral conditions, but open at pH 5. The capping components of the megagates were designed to be capable of controlling pores up to 6.5 nm in diameter. Selectivity of payloads with different sizes can be achieved through the use of different capping components. The operation of the megagates was demonstrated by time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy which is capable of monitoring the release of both the payload and the cap. This study opens up new possibilities in the field of controllable release.

Mesoporous silica-based hybrid materials for bone-specific drug delivery.

Project description:A mesoporous silica-based drug delivery device potentially useful for bone-specific drug delivery has been designed, developed and characterized starting from MSU-type mesoporous silica. The proposed system consists of a mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) based vehicle, presenting alendronate as a targeting functionality for bone tissue while ibuprofen is used as a model molecule for the drugs to be delivered. The particles are functionalized on the external surface using a propionitrile derivative that is successively hydrolyzed to a carboxylic group. Alendronate, one of the most used member of the diphosphonate drug class, is electrostatically bonded to the external carboxyl functionalities of mesoporous silica. The obtained material has been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption-desorption porosimetry, UV-vis spectrophotometry, FT-IR spectrometry and MAS-NMR 13C and 29Si. Hydroxyapatite, which simulates the bone matrix, has been synthesized with the aim of testing the targeting activity of the obtained device. In a separate test, the MSNs have been loaded with ibuprofen, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), and its release has been determined under neutral conditions by HPLC. Moreover, biological tests were carried out. The tested devices did not show any toxicity towards normal cells, confirming their high biocompatibility and the lack of off-target effects.

The pore size of mesoporous silica nanoparticles regulates their antigen delivery efficiency.

Project description:Subunit vaccines generally proceed through a 4-step in vivo cascade-the DUMP cascade-to generate potent cell-mediated immune responses: (1) drainage to lymph nodes; (2) uptake by dendritic cells (DCs); (3) maturation of DCs; and (4) Presentation of peptide-MHC I complexes to CD8+ T cells. How the physical properties of vaccine carriers such as mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) influence this cascade is unclear. We fabricated 80-nm MSNs with different pore sizes (7.8 nm, 10.3 nm, and 12.9 nm) and loaded them with ovalbumin antigen. Results demonstrated these MSNs with different pore sizes were equally effective in the first three steps of the DUMP cascade, but those with larger pores showed higher cross-presentation efficiency (step 4). Consistently, large-pore MSNs loaded with B16F10 tumor antigens yielded the strongest antitumor effects. These results demonstrate the promise of our lymph node-targeting large-pore MSNs as vaccine-delivery vehicles for immune activation and cancer vaccination.

Engineering of Silica Mesoporous Materials for CO<sub>2</sub> Adsorption.

Project description:Adsorption methods for CO2 capture are characterized by high selectivity and low energy consumption. Therefore, the engineering of solid supports for efficient CO2 adsorption attracts research attention. Modification of mesoporous silica materials with tailor-made organic molecules can greatly improve silica's performance in CO2 capture and separation. In that context, a new derivative of 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide, possessing an electron-rich condensed aromatic structure and also known for its anti-oxidative properties, was synthesized and applied as a modifying agent of 2D SBA-15, 3D SBA-16, and KIT-6 silicates. The physicochemical properties of the initial and modified materials were studied using nitrogen physisorption and temperature-gravimetric analysis. The adsorption capacity of CO2 was measured in a dynamic CO2 adsorption regime. The three modified materials displayed a higher capacity for CO2 adsorption than the initial ones. Among the studied sorbents, the modified mesoporous SBA-15 silica showed the highest adsorption capacity for CO2 (3.9 mmol/g). In the presence of 1 vol.% water vapor, the adsorption capacities of the modified materials were enhanced. Total CO2 desorption from the modified materials was achieved at 80 °C. The obtained silica materials displayed stable performance in five CO2 adsorption/desorption cycles. The experimental data can be appropriately described by the Yoon-Nelson kinetic model.

Tailoring of Mesoporous Silica-Based Materials for Enhanced Water Pollutants Removal.

Project description:The adsorptive performance of mesoporous silica-based materials towards inorganic (metal ions) and organic (dyes) water pollutants was investigated. Mesoporous silica materials with different particle size, surface area and pore volume were prepared and tailored with different functional groups. These materials were then characterised by solid-state techniques, namely vibrational spectroscopy, elemental analysis, scanning electron microscopy and nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, allowing the successful preparation and structural modifications of the materials to be confirmed. The influence of the physicochemical properties of the adsorbents towards the removal of metal ions (Ni2+, Cu2+ and Fe3+) and organic dyes (methylene blue and methyl green) from aqueous solutions was also investigated. The results reveal that the exceptionally high surface area and suitable ζ-potential of the nanosized mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNPs) seem to favour the adsorptive capacity of the material for both types of water pollutants. Kinetic studies were performed for the adsorption of organic dyes by MSNPs and large-pore mesoporous silica (LPMS), suggesting that the process follows a pseudo-second-order model. The recyclability along consecutive adsorption cycles and the stability of the adsorbents after use were also investigated, showing that the material can be reused. Current results show the potentialities of novel silica-based material as a suitable adsorbent to remove pollutants from aquatic matrices with an applicability to reduce water pollution.

Mesoporous Silica and Titania-Based Materials for Stability Enhancement of Polyphenols.

Project description:To improve phytochemical stability, polyphenolic extracts prepared from Salvia officinalis L., which is a valuable source of phytocompounds with health benefits, were embedded into mesopores of silica, titania, or titania-ceria materials. Ethanolic and hydroalcoholic extracts were prepared by conventional, microwave- or ultrasound-assisted extraction. The influence of the extraction conditions on chemical profile, radical scavenger activity (RSA), and antimicrobial potential of the extracts was assessed. The extracts were characterized by spectrophotometric determination of total polyphenols, flavonoids, chlorophyll pigment contents, as well as RSA. A reverse phase HPLC- PDA analysis was performed for the identification and quantification of extract polyphenols. The extract-loaded materials exhibited an enhanced RSA compared to the free extract after several months of storage, resulting in better polyphenol stability over time following embedding into a mesoporous matrix. Selected extracts free and embedded into mesoporous support were tested against Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923; the best antimicrobial activity was obtained for S. aureus. A slight improvement in antimicrobial activity was observed for the ethanolic extract prepared by ultrasound-assisted extraction following embedding into the TiO2 matrix compared to MCM-41 silica due to the support contribution.

Adsorption-Induced Deformation of Hierarchically Structured Mesoporous Silica-Effect of Pore-Level Anisotropy.

Project description:The goal of this work is to understand adsorption-induced deformation of hierarchically structured porous silica exhibiting well-defined cylindrical mesopores. For this purpose, we performed an in situ dilatometry measurement on a calcined and sintered monolithic silica sample during the adsorption of N2 at 77 K. To analyze the experimental data, we extended the adsorption stress model to account for the anisotropy of cylindrical mesopores, i.e., we explicitly derived the adsorption stress tensor components in the axial and radial direction of the pore. For quantitative predictions of stresses and strains, we applied the theoretical framework of Derjaguin, Broekhoff, and de Boer for adsorption in mesopores and two mechanical models of silica rods with axially aligned pore channels: an idealized cylindrical tube model, which can be described analytically, and an ordered hexagonal array of cylindrical mesopores, whose mechanical response to adsorption stress was evaluated by 3D finite element calculations. The adsorption-induced strains predicted by both mechanical models are in good quantitative agreement making the cylindrical tube the preferable model for adsorption-induced strains due to its simple analytical nature. The theoretical results are compared with the in situ dilatometry data on a hierarchically structured silica monolith composed by a network of mesoporous struts of MCM-41 type morphology. Analyzing the experimental adsorption and strain data with the proposed theoretical framework, we find the adsorption-induced deformation of the monolithic sample being reasonably described by a superposition of axial and radial strains calculated on the mesopore level. The structural and mechanical parameters obtained from the model are in good agreement with expectations from independent measurements and literature, respectively.
