Bacterial proteins are synthesized with an N-formylated amino-terminal methionine, and N-formylated peptides elicit innate-immunity responses against bacterial infections. However, the source of these formylated peptides is not clear, as most bacterial proteins are co-translationally deformylated by peptide deformylase.
