Metal Phosphate-Supported Pt Catalysts for CO Oxidation.

ABSTRACT: Oxides (such as SiO?, TiO?, ZrO?, Al?O?, Fe?O?, CeO?) have often been used to prepare supported Pt catalysts for CO oxidation and other reactions, whereas metal phosphate-supported Pt catalysts for CO oxidation were rarely reported. Metal phosphates are a family of metal salts with high thermal stability and acid-base properties. Hydroxyapatite (Ca₁₀(PO?)?(OH)?, denoted as Ca-P-O here) also has rich hydroxyls. Here we report a series of metal phosphate-supported Pt (Pt/M-P-O, M = Mg, Al, Ca, Fe, Co, Zn, La) catalysts for CO oxidation. Pt/Ca-P-O shows the highest activity. Relevant characterization was conducted using N? adsorption-desorption, inductively coupled plasma (ICP) atomic emission spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), CO? temperature-programmed desorption (CO?-TPD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and H? temperature-programmed reduction (H?-TPR). This work furnishes a new catalyst system for CO oxidation and other possible reactions.

Atomic level fluxional behavior and activity of CeO2-supported Pt catalysts for CO oxidation.

Project description:Reducible oxides are widely used catalyst supports that can increase oxidation reaction rates by transferring lattice oxygen at the metal-support interface. There are many outstanding questions regarding the atomic-scale dynamic meta-stability (i.e., fluxional behavior) of the interface during catalysis. Here, we employ aberration-corrected operando electron microscopy to visualize the structural dynamics occurring at and near Pt/CeO2 interfaces during CO oxidation. We show that the catalytic turnover frequency correlates with fluxional behavior that (a) destabilizes the supported Pt particle, (b) marks an enhanced rate of oxygen vacancy creation and annihilation, and (c) leads to increased strain and reduction in the CeO2 support surface. Overall, the results implicate the interfacial Pt-O-Ce bonds anchoring the Pt to the support as being involved also in the catalytically-driven oxygen transfer process, and they suggest that oxygen reduction takes place on the highly reduced CeO2 surface before migrating to the interfacial perimeter for reaction with CO.

CeO2-Supported TiO2-Pt Nanorod Composites as Efficient Catalysts for CO Oxidation.

Project description:Supported Pt-based catalysts have been identified as highly selective catalysts for CO oxidation, but their potential for applications has been hampered by the high cost and scarcity of Pt metals as well as aggregation problems at relatively high temperatures. In this work, nanorod structured (TiO2-Pt)/CeO2 catalysts with the addition of 0.3 at% Pt and different atomic ratios of Ti were prepared through a combined dealloying and calcination method. XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM, and STEM measurements were used to confirm the phase composition, surface morphology, and structure of synthesized samples. After calcination treatment, Pt nanoparticles were semi-inlayed on the surface of the CeO2 nanorod, and TiO2 was highly dispersed into the catalyst system, resulting in the formation of (TiO2-Pt)/CeO2 with high specific surface area and large pore volume. The unique structure can provide more reaction path and active sites for catalytic CO oxidation, thus contributing to the generation of catalysts with high catalytic activity. The outstanding catalytic performance is ascribed to the stable structure and proper TiO2 doping as well as the combined effect of Pt, TiO2, and CeO2. The research results are of importance for further development of high catalytic performance nanoporous catalytic materials.

Oxidation of Dichloromethane over Au, Pt, and Pt-Au Containing Catalysts Supported on ?-Al2O3 and CeO2-Al2O3.

Project description:Au, Pt, and Pt-Au catalysts supported on Al2O3 and CeO2-Al2O3 were studied in the oxidation of dichloromethane (DCM, CH2Cl2). High DCM oxidation activities and HCl selectivities were seen with all the catalysts. With the addition of Au, remarkably lower light-off temperatures were observed as they were reduced by 70 and 85 degrees with the Al2O3-supported and by 35 and 40 degrees with the CeO2-Al2O3-supported catalysts. Excellent HCl selectivities close to 100% were achieved with the Au/Al2O3 and Pt-Au/Al2O3 catalysts. The addition of ceria on alumina decreased the total acidity of these catalysts, resulting in lower performance. The 100-h stability test showed that the Pt-Au/Al2O3 catalyst was active and durable, but the selectivity towards the total oxidation products needs improvement. The results suggest that, with the Au-containing Al2O3-supported catalysts, DCM decomposition mainly occurs via direct DCM hydrolysis into formaldehyde and HCl followed by the oxidation of formaldehyde into CO and CO2.

A quick and versatile one step metal-organic chemical deposition method for supported Pt and Pt-alloy catalysts.

Project description:A simple, modified Metal-Organic Chemical Deposition (MOCD) method for Pt, PtRu and PtCo nanoparticle deposition onto a variety of support materials, including C, SiC, B4C, LaB6, TiB2, TiN and a ceramic/carbon nanofiber, is described. Pt deposition using Pt(acac)2 as a precursor is shown to occur via a mixed solid/liquid/vapour precursor phase which results in a high Pt yield of 90-92% on the support material. Pt and Pt alloy nanoparticles range 1.5-6.2 nm, and are well dispersed on all support materials, in a one-step method, with a total catalyst preparation time of ∼10 hours (2.4-4× quicker than conventional methods). The MOCD preparation method includes moderate temperatures of 350 °C in a tubular furnace with an inert gas supply at 2 bar, a high pressure (2-4 bar) compared to typical MOCVD methods (∼0.02-10 mbar). Pt/C catalysts with Pt loadings of 20, 40 and 60 wt% were synthesised, physically characterised, electrochemically characterised and compared to commercial Pt/C catalysts. TEM, XRD and ex situ EXAFS show similar Pt particle sizes and Pt particle shape identifiers, namely the ratio of the third to first Pt coordination numbers modelled from ex situ EXAFS, between the MOCD prepared catalysts and commercial catalysts. Moreover, electrochemical characterisation of the Pt/C MOCD catalysts obtained ORR mass activities with a maximum of 428 A gPt -1 at 0.9 V, which has similar mass activities to the commercial catalysts (80-160% compared to the commercial Pt/C catalysts).

Pt/CeO2 and Pt/CeSnOx Catalysts for Low-Temperature CO Oxidation Prepared by Plasma-Arc Technique.

Project description:We applied a method of plasma arc synthesis to study effects of modification of the fluorite phase of ceria by tin ions. By sputtering active components (Pt, Ce, Sn) together with carbon from a graphite electrode in a helium ambient we prepared samples of complex highly defective composite PtCeC and PtCeSnC oxide particles stabilized in a matrix of carbon. Subsequent high-temperature annealing of the samples in oxygen removes the carbon matrix and causes the formation of active catalysts Pt/CeOx and Pt/CeSnOx for CO oxidation. In the presence of Sn, X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM) show formation of a mixed phase CeSnOx and stabilization of more dispersed species with a fluorite-type structure. These factors are essential for the observed high activity and thermic stability of the catalyst modified by Sn. X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) reveals the presence of both Pt2+ and Pt4+ ions in the catalyst Pt/CeOx, whereas only the state Pt2+ of platinum could be detected in the Sn-modified catalyst Pt/CeSnOx. Insertion of Sn ions into the Pt/CeOx lattice destabilizes/reduces Pt4+ cations in the Pt/CeSnOx catalyst and induces formation of strikingly high concentration (up to 50% at.) of lattice Ce3+ ions. Our DFT calculations corroborate destabilization of Pt4+ ions by incorporation of cationic Sn in Pt/CeOx. The presented results show that modification of the fluorite lattice of ceria by tin induces substantial amount of mobile reactive oxygen partly due to affecting geometric parameters of ceria by tin ions.

Understanding the Impact of Defects on Catalytic CO Oxidation of LaFeO3-Supported Rh, Pd, and Pt Single-Atom Catalysts.

Project description:Understanding the intrinsic catalytic properties of perovskite materials can accelerate the development of highly active and abundant complex oxide catalysts. Here, we performed a first-principles density functional theory study combined with a microkinetics analysis to comprehensively investigate the influence of defects on catalytic CO oxidation of LaFeO3 catalysts containing single atoms of Rh, Pd, and Pt. La defects and subsurface O vacancies considerably affect the local electronic structure of these single atoms adsorbed at the surface or replacing Fe in the surface of the perovskite. As a consequence, not only the stability of the introduced single atoms is enhanced but also the CO and O2 adsorption energies are modified. This also affects the barriers for CO oxidation. Uniquely, we find that the presence of La defects results in a much higher CO oxidation rate for the doped perovskite surface. A linear correlation between the activation barrier for CO oxidation and the surface O vacancy formation energy for these models is identified. Additionally, the presence of subsurface O vacancies only slightly promotes CO oxidation on the LaFeO3 surface with an adsorbed Rh atom. Our findings suggest that the introduction of La defects in LaFeO3-based environmental catalysts could be a promising strategy toward improved oxidation performance. The insights revealed herein guide the design of the perovskite-based three-way catalyst through compositional variation.

Low Metal Loading (Au, Ag, Pt, Pd) Photo-Catalysts Supported on TiO2 for Renewable Processes.

Project description:Photo-catalysts based on titanium dioxide, and modified with highly dispersed metallic nanoparticles of Au, Ag, Pd and Pt, either mono- or bi-metallic, have been analyzed by multiple characterization techniques, including XRD, XPS, SEM, EDX, UV-Vis and N2 adsorption/desorption. Mono-metallic photo-catalysts were prepared by wet impregnation, while bi-metallic photocatalysts were obtained via deposition-precipitation (DP). The relationship between the physico-chemical properties and the catalyst's behavior for various photo-synthetic processes, such as carbon dioxide photo-reduction to liquid products and glucose photo-reforming to hydrogen have been investigated. Among the tested materials, the catalysts containing platinum alone (i.e., 0.1 mol% Pt/TiO2) or bi-metallic gold-containing materials (e.g., 1 wt% (AuxAgy)/TiO2 and 1 wt% (AuxPtz)/TiO2) showed the highest activity, presenting the best results in terms of productivity and conversion for both applications. The textural, structural and morphological properties of the different samples being very similar, the main parameters to improve performance were function of the metal as electron sink, together with optoelectronic properties. The high activity in both applications was related to the low band gap, that allows harvesting more energy from a polychromatic light source with respect to the bare TiO2. Overall, high selectivity and productivity were achieved with respect to most literature data.

Selective Oxidation of HMF via Catalytic and Photocatalytic Processes Using Metal-Supported Catalysts.

Project description:In this study, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) oxidation was carried out via both the catalytic and the photocatalytic approach. Special attention was devoted to the preparation of the TiO₂-based catalysts, since this oxide has been widely used for catalytic and photocatalytic application in alcohol oxidation reactions. Thus, in the catalytic process, the colloidal heterocoagulation of very stable sols, followed by the spray-freeze-drying (SFD) approach, was successfully applied for the preparation of nanostructured porous TiO₂-SiO₂ mixed-oxides with high surface areas. The versatility of the process made it possible to encapsulate Pt particles and use this material in the liquid-phase oxidation of HMF. The photocatalytic activity of a commercial titania and a homemade oxide prepared with the microemulsion technique was then compared. The influence of gold, base addition, and oxygen content on product distribution in the photocatalytic process was evaluated.

Molten salt synthesis of carbon-supported Pt-rare earth metal nanoalloy catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction.

Project description:The synthesis of nano-sized alloys of Pt and rare earth (RE) metal catalysts has been a huge challenge due to a significantly large standard reduction potential difference of Pt and RE metals and the high synthesis temperature. Pt x Y/C catalysts with an average particle size of around 21 nm, were synthesized by mixing K2PtCl4 with Y2O3 (a molar ratio of Pt : Y = 1 : 1) with a carbon support in a molten LiCl-CaH2 system by a one-step molten salt synthesis method at 600 °C. The synthesis processes of the Pt x Y/C alloys are proposed as follows: Pt nanoparticles were first obtained by the reaction of K2PtCl4 and CaH2 at 210 °C, then Y ions were preferentially reduced on the Pt nanoparticle surface by the reduction of CaH2, followed by Pt x Y alloy formation in the molten LiCl-CaH2 system at 600 °C. Molten LiCl provides a strong reducing environment and lowers the formation temperature of alloys. Pt2Gd/C and Pt2La/C were also obtained with Gd2O3 and La2O3 as the starting raw materials, respectively by using the same process. When investigated as an electrocatalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), the half-wave potentials of Pt x RE/Cs are all more positive than that of commercial Pt/C catalyst (e.g., 0.905 V for Pt x Y/C while 0.880 V for JM Pt/C), and the nano-sized Pt x Y/C alloy shows higher electrocatalytic activity toward the ORR and preferable catalytic durability with respect to JM Pt/C catalysts. This facile synthesis method provides an effective strategy for the preparation of Pt-RE based multicomponent nanoalloys, especially in large-scale production.

NaCl-Templated Ultrathin 2D-Yttria Nanosheets Supported Pt Nanoparticles for Enhancing CO Oxidation Reaction.

Project description:Morphology of support is of fundamental significance to the fabrication of highly efficient catalysts for CO oxidation reaction. Many methods for the construction of supports with specific morphology and structures greatly rely on controlling general physical and chemical synthesis conditions such as temperature or pH. In this paper, we report a facile route to prepare yttria nanosheet using NaCl as template to support platinum nanoparticles exhibiting higher CO oxidation activity than that of the normally prepared Pt/Y2O3. With the help of TEM and SEM, we found that Pt NPs evenly distributed on the surface of NaCl modified 2D-nanosheets with smaller size. The combination of XAFS and TEM characterizations demonstrated that the nano-size Pt species with PtxOy structure played an essential role in the conversion of CO and kept steady during the CO oxidation process. Moreover, the Pt nanoparticles supported on the NaCl templated Y2O3 nanosheets could be more easily reduced and thus exposed more Pt sites to adsorb CO molecules for CO oxidation according to XPS and DRIFTS results. This work offers a unique and general method for the preparation of potential non-cerium oxide rare earth element oxide supported nanocatalysts.
