Gigantic negative magnetoresistance in the bulk of a disordered topological insulator.

ABSTRACT: With the recent discovery of Weyl semimetals, the phenomenon of negative magnetoresistance (MR) is attracting renewed interest. Large negative MR is usually related to magnetism, but the chiral anomaly in Weyl semimetals is a rare exception. Here we report a mechanism for large negative MR which is also unrelated to magnetism but is related to disorder. In the nearly bulk-insulating topological insulator TlBi0.15Sb0.85Te2, we observed gigantic negative MR reaching 98% in 14?T at 10?K, which is unprecedented in a nonmagnetic system. Supported by numerical simulations, we argue that this phenomenon is likely due to the Zeeman effect on a barely percolating current path formed in the disordered bulk. Since disorder can also lead to non-saturating linear MR in Ag2+?Se, the present finding suggests that disorder engineering in narrow-gap systems is useful for realizing gigantic MR in both positive and negative directions.

Enhanced negative magnetoresistance near the charge neutral point in Cr doped topological insulator.

Project description:Negative magnetoresistance (MR) is not only of great fundamental interest for condensed matter physics and materials science, but also important for practical applications, especially magnetic data storage and sensors. However, the microscopic origin of negative MR is still elusive and the nature of the negative MR in magnetic topological insulators has still not been completely elucidated. Here, we report magnetotransport studies on Cr doped (Bi1-x Sb x )2Te3 topological insulator thin films grown by magnetron sputtering. At the temperature of 2 K, a giant negative MR reaching 61% is observed at H = 2 T. We show that the negative MR is closely related to the position of the Fermi level, and it reaches the maximum when the Fermi level is gated near the charge neutral point. We attribute these results to the Coulomb potential due to the random composition fluctuations in Cr doped (Bi1-x Sb x )2Te3. Our results provide a deeper insight into the mechanism of negative MR, and are helpful to realize the quantum anomalous Hall effect in the sputtered Cr-(Bi1-x Sb x )2Te3 thin-film systems by tuning the Fermi level and reducing disorder effects.

Quantum and classical magnetoresistance in ambipolar topological insulator transistors with gate-tunable bulk and surface conduction.

Project description:Weak antilocalization (WAL) and linear magnetoresistance (LMR) are two most commonly observed magnetoresistance (MR) phenomena in topological insulators (TIs) and often attributed to the Dirac topological surface states (TSS). However, ambiguities exist because these phenomena could also come from bulk states (often carrying significant conduction in many TIs) and are observable even in non-TI materials. Here, we demonstrate back-gated ambipolar TI field-effect transistors in (Bi0.04Sb0.96)2Te3 thin films grown by molecular beam epitaxy on SrTiO3(111), exhibiting a large carrier density tunability (by nearly 2 orders of magnitude) and a metal-insulator transition in the bulk (allowing switching off the bulk conduction). Tuning the Fermi level from bulk band to TSS strongly enhances both the WAL (increasing the number of quantum coherent channels from one to peak around two) and LMR (increasing its slope by up to 10 times). The SS-enhanced LMR is accompanied by a strongly nonlinear Hall effect, suggesting important roles of charge inhomogeneity (and a related classical LMR), although existing models of LMR cannot capture all aspects of our data. Our systematic gate and temperature dependent magnetotransport studies provide deeper insights into the nature of both MR phenomena and reveal differences between bulk and TSS transport in TI related materials.

Huge magnetoresistance in topological insulator spin-valves at room temperature.

Project description:Topological insulators (TI) have extremely high potential in spintronic applications. Here, a topological insulators thin-film (TITF) spin valve with the use of the segment gate-controlled potential exhibits a huge magnetoresistance (MR) value higher than 1000% at room temperature which is more than 50 times the MR of typical topological insulators (TI) spin-valves. A high spin-polarized current is provided by the band structure generated by the tunable segment potential. The results reveal a very large resistance difference between the parallel and antiparallel configurations. The MR effect is strongly influenced by the thin-film thickness, the gate potential, the gate size, and the distribution. The proposed results will help to not only improve the room-temperature performance of the spin-valves but also enhance the applications of magnetic memories and spintronic devices.

Topological Anderson Insulator in Cation-Disordered Cu2ZnSnS4.

Project description:We present the first candidate for the realization of a disorder-induced Topological Anderson Insulator in a real material system. High-energy reactive mechanical alloying produces a polymorph of Cu2ZnSnS4 with high cation disorder. Density functional theory calculations show an inverted ordering of bands at the Brillouin zone center for this polymorph, which is in contrast to its ordered phase. Adiabatic continuity arguments establish that this disordered Cu2ZnSnS4 can be connected to the closely related Cu2ZnSnSe4, which was previously predicted to be a 3D topological insulator, while band structure calculations with a slab geometry reveal the presence of robust surface states. This evidence makes a strong case in favor of a novel topological phase. As such, the study opens up a window to understanding and potentially exploiting topological behavior in a rich class of easily-synthesized multinary, disordered compounds.

Spin-dependent scattering induced negative magnetoresistance in topological insulator Bi2Te3 nanowires.

Project description:Studies of negative magnetoresistance in novel materials have recently been in the forefront of spintronic research. Here, we report an experimental observation of the temperature dependent negative magnetoresistance in Bi2Te3 topological insulator (TI) nanowires at ultralow temperatures (20 mK). We find a crossover from negative to positive magnetoresistance while increasing temperature under longitudinal magnetic field. We observe a large negative magnetoresistance which reaches -22% at 8 T. The interplay between negative and positive magnetoresistance can be understood in terms of the competition between dephasing and spin-orbit scattering time scales. Based on the first-principles calculations within a density functional theory framework, we demonstrate that disorder (substitutional) by Ga+ ion milling process, which is used to fabricate nanowires, induces local magnetic moments in Bi2Te3 crystal that can lead to spin-dependent scattering of surface and bulk electrons. These experimental findings show a significant advance in the nanoscale spintronics applications based on longitudinal magnetoresistance in TIs. Our experimental results of large negative longitudinal magnetoresistance in 3D TIs further indicate that axial anomaly is a universal phenomenon in generic 3D metals.

Unidirectional spin-Hall and Rashba-Edelstein magnetoresistance in topological insulator-ferromagnet layer heterostructures.

Project description:The large spin-orbit coupling in topological insulators results in helical spin-textured Dirac surface states that are attractive for topological spintronics. These states generate an efficient spin-orbit torque on proximal magnetic moments. However, memory or logic spin devices based upon such switching require a non-optimal three-terminal geometry, with two terminals for the writing current and one for reading the state of the device. An alternative two-terminal device geometry is now possible by exploiting the recent discovery of the unidirectional spin Hall magnetoresistance in heavy metal/ferromagnet bilayers and unidirectional magnetoresistance in magnetic topological insulators. Here, we report the observation of such unidirectional magnetoresistance in a technologically relevant device geometry that combines a topological insulator with a conventional ferromagnetic metal. Our devices show a figure of merit (magnetoresistance per current density per total resistance) that is more than twice as large as the highest reported values in all-metal Ta/Co bilayers.

Sn-doped Bi1.1Sb0.9Te2S bulk crystal topological insulator with excellent properties.

Project description:A long-standing issue in topological insulator research has been to find a bulk single crystal material that provides a high-quality platform for characterizing topological surface states without interference from bulk electronic states. This material would ideally be a bulk insulator, have a surface state Dirac point energy well isolated from the bulk valence and conduction bands, display quantum oscillations from the surface state electrons and be growable as large, high-quality bulk single crystals. Here we show that this material obstacle is overcome by bulk crystals of lightly Sn-doped Bi1.1Sb0.9Te2S grown by the vertical Bridgman method. We characterize Sn-BSTS via angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, scanning tunnelling microscopy, transport studies, X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering. We present this material as a high-quality topological insulator that can be reliably grown as bulk single crystals and thus studied by many researchers interested in topological surface states.

Magnetoresistance Anomaly in Topological Kondo Insulator SmB6 Nanowires with Strong Surface Magnetism.

Project description:Topological Kondo insulators (TKIs) are a new class of topological materials in which topological surface states dominate the transport properties at low temperatures. They are also an ideal platform for studying the interplay between strong electron correlations and topological order. Here, hysteretic magnetoresistance (MR) is observed in TKI SmB6 thin nanowires at temperatures up to 8 K, revealing the strong magnetism at the surface of SmB6. It is also found that such MR anomaly exhibits an intriguing finite size effect and only appears in nanowires with diameter smaller than 58 nm. These nontrivial phenomena are discussed in terms of the latest Kondo breakdown model, which incorporates the RKKY magnetic interaction mediated by surface states with the strong electron correlation in SmB6. It would provide new insight into the nature of TKI surface states. Additionally, a non-monotonically temperature dependent positive magnetoresistance is observed at intermediate temperatures, suggesting the possible impurity-band conduction in SmB6, other than the surface state transport at low temperatures and the bulk-band transport at high temperatures.

Gigantic tunneling magnetoresistance in magnetic Weyl semimetal tunnel junctions.

Project description:We investigate the tunneling magnetoresistance in magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) comprised of Weyl semimetal contacts. We show that chirality-magnetization locking leads to a gigantic tunneling magnetoresistance ratio, an effect that does not rely on spin filtering by the tunnel barrier. Our results indicate that the conductance in the anti-parallel configuration is more sensitive to magnetization fluctations than in MTJs with normal ferromagnets, and predicts a TMR as large as 104 % when realistic magnetization fluctuations are accounted for. In addition, we show that the Fermi arc states give rise to a non-monotonic dependence of conductance on the misalignment angle between the magnetizations of the two contacts.

Observation of giant room-temperature anisotropic magnetoresistance in the topological insulator β-Ag2Te.

Project description:Achieving room-temperature high anisotropic magnetoresistance ratios is highly desirable for magnetic sensors with scaled supply voltages and high sensitivities. However, the ratios in heterojunction-free thin films are currently limited to only a few percent at room temperature. Here, we observe a high anisotropic magnetoresistance ratio of -39% and a giant planar Hall effect (520 μΩ⋅cm) at room temperature under 9 T in β-Ag2Te crystals grown by chemical vapor deposition. We propose a theoretical model of anisotropic scattering - induced by a Dirac cone tilt and modulated by intrinsic properties of effective mass and sound velocity - as a possible origin. Moreover, small-size angle sensors with a Wheatstone bridge configuration were fabricated using the synthesized β-Ag2Te crystals. The sensors exhibited high output response (240 mV/V), high angle sensitivity (4.2 mV/V/°) and small angle error (<1°). Our work translates the developments in topological insulators to a broader impact on practical applications such as high-field magnetic and angle sensors.
