The straight-tusked elephants <i>Palaeoloxodon</i> spp. were widespread across Eurasia during the Pleistocene. Phylogenetic reconstructions using morphological traits have grouped them with Asian elephants (<i>Elephas maximus</i>), and many paleontologists place <i>Palaeoloxodon</i> within <i>Elephas</i>.
