Data on the anisotropic interfacial slip length over fibrous porous media.

ABSTRACT: To characterize the velocity slip at the fibrous porous media, data on the anisotropic slip length has been fully analyzed through direct simulations for various geometrical aspects of fiber architecture [2] ). This data article provides detailed slip lengths and slip coefficients in dimensionless form as a function of various geometrical parameters of fibrous porous media including the fiber volume fraction, the dimensionless void length and the normalized permeability. The data is presented for three different fiber packing structures (the quadrilateral, hexagonal and compressed hexagonal packing) in both the fiber and normal to fiber directions. Finally a set of curves from the complete fitted equation set are also provided in a single figure that can be used to estimate the slip length and the normalized permeability for a given fibrous porous media.

Respiratory droplets interception in fibrous porous media.

Project description:We investigate, by means of pore-scale lattice Boltzmann simulations, the mechanisms of interception of respiratory droplets within fibrous porous media composing face masks. We simulate the dynamics, coalescence, and collection of droplets of the size comparable with the fiber and pore size in typical fluid-dynamic conditions that represent common expiratory events. We discern the fibrous microstructure into three categories of pores: small, large, and medium-sized pores, where we find that within the latter, the incoming droplets tend to be more likely intercepted. The size of the medium-sized pores relative to the fiber size is placed between the droplet-to-fiber size ratio and a porosity-dependent microstructural parameter Lϵ*=ϵ/(1-ϵ) , with ϵ being the porosity. In larger pores, droplets collection is instead inhibited by the small pore-throat-to-fiber size ratio that characterizes the pore perimeter, limiting their access. The efficiency of the fibrous media in intercepting droplets without compromising breathability, for a given droplet-to-fiber size ratio, can be estimated by knowing the parameter Lϵ* . We propose a simple model that predicts the average penetration of droplets into the fibrous media, showing a sublinear growth with Lϵ* . Permeability is shown also to scale well with Lϵ* but following a superlinear growth, which indicates the possibility of increasing the medium permeability at a little cost in terms of interception efficiency for high values of porosity. As a general design guideline, the results also suggest that a fibrous layer thickness relative to the fiber size should exceed the value Lϵ* in order to ensure effective droplets filtration.

Fabric dependence of quasi-waves in anisotropic porous media.

Project description:Assessment of bone loss and osteoporosis by ultrasound systems is based on the speed of sound and broadband ultrasound attenuation of a single wave. However, the existence of a second wave in cancellous bone has been reported and its existence is an unequivocal signature of poroelastic media. To account for the fact that ultrasound is sensitive to microarchitecture as well as bone mineral density (BMD), a fabric-dependent anisotropic poroelastic wave propagation theory was recently developed for pure wave modes propagating along a plane of symmetry in an anisotropic medium. Key to this development was the inclusion of the fabric tensor--a quantitative stereological measure of the degree of structural anisotropy of bone--into the linear poroelasticity theory. In the present study, this framework is extended to the propagation of mixed wave modes along an arbitrary direction in anisotropic porous media called quasi-waves. It was found that differences between phase and group velocities are due to the anisotropy of the bone microarchitecture, and that the experimental wave velocities are more accurately predicted by the poroelastic model when the fabric tensor variable is taken into account. This poroelastic wave propagation theory represents an alternative for bone quality assessment beyond BMD.

Surface Tension and Viscosity Dependence of Slip Length over Irregularly Structured Superhydrophobic Surfaces.

Project description:A comprehensive understanding of the slip phenomenon on liquid/solid interfaces is essential for multiple real-world applications of superhydrophobic materials, especially those involving drag reduction. In the current contribution, the so-called "slip-length" on an irregularly structured superhydrophobic surface was systematically evaluated, with respect to varying liquid surface tension and viscosity. The superhydrophobic polymer-nanoparticle composite (SPNC) material used exhibits a dual-scale surface roughness and was fabricated via coating a surface with a mixture of polydimethylsiloxane solution and functionalized silica particles. A cone-and-plate rheometric device was employed to quantify the slip length. To independently study the impact of surface tension and viscosity, three types of aqueous solutions were used: sodium dodecyl sulfate, ethanol, and polyethylene glycol. Our experimental results demonstrate that a decreasing surface tension results in a decreasing slip length when the fluid viscosity is held constant. Meanwhile, the slip length is shown to increase with increasing viscosity when the surface tension of the various liquids is matched to isolate effects. The study reveals a linear relationship between slip length and both capillary length and viscosity providing a reference to potentially predict the degree of achievable drag reduction for differing fluids on SPNC surfaces.

Lithium metal batteries using a lithiophilic oxidative interfacial layer on the 3D porous metal alloy media.

Project description:Various lithium-infused metal anodes based on pure nickel foam, recognised for their superior properties, have been developed for application in lithium batteries. However, pure nickel foam exhibits significant reactivity with molten lithium during the infusion processes, such as coating and impregnation. In this study, a high-performance and ultra-stable lithium-infused metal anode (LI-NAFA) is synthesised through a simple oxidation treatment of nickel-chromium-aluminium (Ni-Cr-Al) alloy foam (NAF) at 900 °C in an air atmosphere. This approach effectively mitigates the material's reactivity with molten lithium, thereby enhancing the stability of the resulting anode. A layer of several hundred nanometers is generated, which converts the NAF surface from lithiophobic to lithiophilic. Additionally, the layers formed during oxidation enhance the molten lithium stability. A full cell test employing LI-NAFA showed stability during the molten lithium infusion and cycle performance. A full cell with pure lithium was also tested for comparison. The notable enhancement in performance can be ascribed to the excellent electrical conductivity of the NAF and improved cycling stability of lithium ions facilitated by uniform charge distribution. Following cell discharge, the LI-NAFA showed no formation of lithium dendrites and a reduction in dead lithium. LI-NAFA holds great potential for developing high-performance lithium metal batteries because of its favourable fabrication process and excellent cycling stability.

The Gas-absorption/Chemical-reaction Method for Measuring Air-water Interfacial Area in Natural Porous Media.

Project description:The gas-absorption/chemical-reaction (GACR) method used in Chemical Engineering to quantify gas-liquid interfacial area in reactor systems is adapted for the first time to measure the effective air-water interfacial area of natural porous media. Experiments were conducted with the GACR method, and two standard methods (x-ray microtomographic imaging and interfacial partitioning tracer tests) for comparison, using model glass beads and a natural sand. The results of a series of experiments conducted under identical conditions demonstrated that the GACR method exhibited excellent repeatability for maintaining constant water saturation and for measurement of interfacial area (Aia). Coefficients of variation for Aia were 3.5% for the glass beads and 11% for the sand. Estimated maximum interfacial areas (Am) obtained with the GACR method were statistically identical to independent measures of the specific solid surface areas of the media. For example, the Am for the glass beads is 29 (±1) cm-1, compared to 32 (±3), 30 (±2), and 31 (±2) cm-1 determined from geometric calculation, N2/BET measurement, and microtomographic measurement, respectively. This indicates that the method produced accurate measures of interfacial area. Interfacial areas determined with the GACR method were similar to those obtained with the standard methods. For example, Aias of 47 and 44 cm-1 were measured with the GACR and XMT methods, respectively, for the sand at a water saturation of 0.57. The results of the study indicate that the GACR method is a viable alternative for measuring air-water interfacial areas. The method is relatively quick, inexpensive, and requires no specialized instrumentation compared to the standard methods.

Interfacial Properties of Anisotropic Monolayer SiAs Transistors.

Project description:The newly prepared monolayer (ML) SiAs is expected to be a candidate channel material for next-generation nano-electronic devices in virtue of its proper bandgap, high carrier mobility, and anisotropic properties. The interfacial properties in ML SiAs field-effect transistors are comprehensively studied with electrodes (graphene, V2CO2, Au, Ag, and Cu) by using ab initio electronic structure calculations and quantum transport simulation. It is found that ML SiAs forms a weak van der Waals interaction with graphene and V2CO2, while it forms a strong interaction with bulk metals (Au, Ag, and Cu). Although ML SiAs has strong anisotropy, it is not reflected in the contact property. Based on the quantum transport simulation, ML SiAs forms n-type lateral Schottky contact with Au, Ag, and Cu electrodes with the Schottky barrier height (SBH) of 0.28 (0.27), 0.40 (0.47), and 0.45 (0.33) eV along the a (b) direction, respectively, while it forms p-type lateral Schottky contact with a graphene electrode with a SBH of 0.34 (0.28) eV. Fortunately, ML SiAs forms an ideal Ohmic contact with the V2CO2 electrode. This study not only gives a deep understanding of the interfacial properties of ML SiAs with electrodes but also provides a guide for the design of ML SiAs devices.

Regulation of Interfacial Anchoring Orientation of Anisotropic Nanodumbbells.

Project description:Nanoparticles exhibiting geometrical and chemical anisotropies hold promise for environmentally responsive materials with tunable mechanical properties. However, a comprehensive understanding of their interfacial behaviors remains elusive. In this paper, we control the interfacial anchoring orientation of polystyrene nanodumbbells by adjusting interparticle forces. The film nanostructure is characterized by the orientation angle analysis of individual dumbbells from cross-sectional EM data: dumbbells undergo orientation transitions from a distinctive horizontal bilayer to an isotropic anchoring when electrostatic repulsion is suppressed by either an ionic strength increase or surface amine-modification. This anchoring orientation influences the film's mechanical properties and foam stability, as investigated by a 2D isotherm and dark/bright-field microscopy measurements. Our findings highlight the potential for precise control of supra-colloidal structures by modulating particle alignment, paving the way for smart delivery systems.

Hierarchically Organized and Anisotropic Porous Carbon Monoliths.

Project description:Anisotropy is a key factor regarding mechanical or transport properties and thus the functionality of porous materials. However, the ability to deliberately design the pore structure of hierarchically organized porous networks toward anisotropic features is limited. Here, we report two straightforward routes toward hierarchically structured porous carbon monoliths with an anisotropic alignment of the microstructure on the level of macro- and mesopores. One approach is based on nanocasting (NC) of carbon precursors into hierarchical and anisotropic silica hard templates. The second route, a direct synthesis approach based on soft templating (ST), makes use of the flexibility of hierarchically structured resorcinol-formaldehyde gels, which are compressed and simultaneously carbonized in the deformed state. We present structural data of both types of carbon monoliths obtained by electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption analysis, and SAXS measurements. In addition, we demonstrate how the degree of anisotropy can easily be controlled via the ST route.

Nanoscale slip length prediction with machine learning tools.

Project description:This work incorporates machine learning (ML) techniques, such as multivariate regression, the multi-layer perceptron, and random forest to predict the slip length at the nanoscale. Data points are collected both from our simulation data and data from the literature, and comprise Molecular Dynamics simulations of simple monoatomic, polar, and molecular liquids. Training and test points cover a wide range of input parameters which have been found to affect the slip length value, concerning dynamical and geometrical characteristics of the model, along with simulation parameters that constitute the simulation conditions. The aim of this work is to suggest an accurate and efficient procedure capable of reproducing physical properties, such as the slip length, acting parallel to simulation methods. Non-linear models, based on neural networks and decision trees, have been found to achieve better performance compared to linear regression methods. After the model is trained on representative simulation data, it is capable of accurately predicting the slip length values in regions between or in close proximity to the input data range, at the nanoscale. Results also reveal that, as channel dimensions increase, the slip length turns into a size-independent material property, affected mainly by wall roughness and wettability.

Isotropic Failure Criteria Are Not Appropriate for Anisotropic Fibrous Biological Tissues.

Project description:The von Mises (VM) stress is a common stress measure for finite element models of tissue mechanics. The VM failure criterion, however, is inherently isotropic, and therefore may yield incorrect results for anisotropic tissues, and the relevance of the VM stress to anisotropic materials is not clear. We explored the application of a well-studied anisotropic failure criterion, the Tsai–Hill (TH) theory, to the mechanically anisotropic porcine aorta. Uniaxial dogbones were cut at different angles and stretched to failure. The tissue was anisotropic, with the circumferential failure stress nearly twice the axial (2.67 ± 0.67 MPa compared to 1.46 ± 0.59 MPa). The VM failure criterion did not capture the anisotropic tissue response, but the TH criterion fit the data well (R2 = 0.986). Shear lap samples were also tested to study the efficacy of each criterion in predicting tissue failure. Two-dimensional failure propagation simulations showed that the VM failure criterion did not capture the failure type, location, or propagation direction nearly as well as the TH criterion. Over the range of loading conditions and tissue geometries studied, we found that problematic results that arise when applying the VM failure criterion to an anisotropic tissue. In contrast, the TH failure criterion, though simplistic and clearly unable to capture all aspects of tissue failure, performed much better. Ultimately, isotropic failure criteria are not appropriate for anisotropic tissues, and the use of the VM stress as a metric of mechanical state should be reconsidered when dealing with anisotropic tissues.
