Dynamic properties of successful smiles.

ABSTRACT: Facial expression of emotion is a foundational aspect of social interaction and nonverbal communication. In this study, we use a computer-animated 3D facial tool to investigate how dynamic properties of a smile are perceived. We created smile animations where we systematically manipulated the smile's angle, extent, dental show, and dynamic symmetry. Then we asked a diverse sample of 802 participants to rate the smiles in terms of their effectiveness, genuineness, pleasantness, and perceived emotional intent. We define a "successful smile" as one that is rated effective, genuine, and pleasant in the colloquial sense of these words. We found that a successful smile can be expressed via a variety of different spatiotemporal trajectories, involving an intricate balance of mouth angle, smile extent, and dental show combined with dynamic symmetry. These findings have broad applications in a variety of areas, such as facial reanimation surgery, rehabilitation, computer graphics, and psychology.

The Smiles of Older People through Recreational Activities: Relationship between Smiles and Joy.

Project description:Recreational activities are found to increase people's smiles, arising joy in older people, but there is limited research on this topic within the Japanese context. This cross-sectional study aimed to measure the quality and frequency of smiles in older people living in rural settings using a smile analysis application. The participants comprised 13 females aged over 65 years who lived in Unnan City, Japan, and regularly attended recreational meetings. In this study, the recreational activity that the participants joined was a game called Mattoss. A video camera captured the participants' faces, while a smile assessment application assessed their facial expressions for smiles and joy. A total of 2767 smiles were recorded. For validity, we calculated the Spearman's rho score between smile and joy, which was 0.9697 (p < 0.001), while for reliability, we determined the Spearman's rho score for each participant, which exceeded 0.7 (p < 0.001). Surges of smiles were induced by one's own mistakes, successes, and big mistakes in the game and by severe or mild judgments by the referee. High validity and reliability of smile evaluation were demonstrated. The study found that smiling increased during recreational activities. Therefore, recreational activities can be encouraged for older people living in rural communities.

Towards a Universal SMILES representation - A standard method to generate canonical SMILES based on the InChI.

Project description:UnlabelledBackgroundThere are two line notations of chemical structures that have established themselves in the field: the SMILES string and the InChI string. The InChI aims to provide a unique, or canonical, identifier for chemical structures, while SMILES strings are widely used for storage and interchange of chemical structures, but no standard exists to generate a canonical SMILES string.ResultsI describe how to use the InChI canonicalisation to derive a canonical SMILES string in a straightforward way, either incorporating the InChI normalisations (Inchified SMILES) or not (Universal SMILES). This is the first description of a method to generate canonical SMILES that takes stereochemistry into account. When tested on the 1.1 m compounds in the ChEMBL database, and a 1 m compound subset of the PubChem Substance database, no canonicalisation failures were found with Inchified SMILES. Using Universal SMILES, 99.79% of the ChEMBL database was canonicalised successfully and 99.77% of the PubChem subset.ConclusionsThe InChI canonicalisation algorithm can successfully be used as the basis for a common standard for canonical SMILES. While challenges remain - such as the development of a standard aromatic model for SMILES - the ability to create the same SMILES using different toolkits will mean that for the first time it will be possible to easily compare the chemical models used by different toolkits.

The SMILES trial: an important first step.

Project description:The SMILES trial was the first intervention study to test dietary improvement as a treatment strategy for depression. Molendijk et al. propose that expectation bias and difficulties with blinding might account for the large effect size. While we acknowledge the issue of expectation bias in lifestyle intervention trials and indeed discuss this as a key limitation in our paper, we observed a strong correlation between dietary change and change in depression scores, which we argue is consistent with a causal effect and we believe unlikely to be an artefact of inadequate blinding. Since its publication, our results have been largely replicated and our recent economic evaluation of SMILES suggests that the benefits of our approach extend beyond depression. We argue that the SMILES trial should be considered an important, albeit preliminary, first step in the field of nutritional psychiatry research.

Img2Mol - accurate SMILES recognition from molecular graphical depictions.

Project description:The automatic recognition of the molecular content of a molecule's graphical depiction is an extremely challenging problem that remains largely unsolved despite decades of research. Recent advances in neural machine translation enable the auto-encoding of molecular structures in a continuous vector space of fixed size (latent representation) with low reconstruction errors. In this paper, we present a fast and accurate model combining deep convolutional neural network learning from molecule depictions and a pre-trained decoder that translates the latent representation into the SMILES representation of the molecules. This combination allows us to precisely infer a molecular structure from an image. Our rigorous evaluation shows that Img2Mol is able to correctly translate up to 88% of the molecular depictions into their SMILES representation. A pretrained version of Img2Mol is made publicly available on GitHub for non-commercial users.

Functional Smiles: Tools for Love, Sympathy, and War.

Project description:A smile is the most frequent facial expression, but not all smiles are equal. A social-functional account holds that smiles of reward, affiliation, and dominance serve basic social functions, including rewarding behavior, bonding socially, and negotiating hierarchy. Here, we characterize the facial-expression patterns associated with these three types of smiles. Specifically, we modeled the facial expressions using a data-driven approach and showed that reward smiles are symmetrical and accompanied by eyebrow raising, affiliative smiles involve lip pressing, and dominance smiles are asymmetrical and contain nose wrinkling and upper-lip raising. A Bayesian-classifier analysis and a detection task revealed that the three smile types are highly distinct. Finally, social judgments made by a separate participant group showed that the different smile types convey different social messages. Our results provide the first detailed description of the physical form and social messages conveyed by these three types of functional smiles and document the versatility of these facial expressions.

Structural and Dynamic Properties of Gallium Alkoxides.

Project description:A comparison of chlorido-gallium functionalized alkoxides as precursors for aerosol-assisted chemical vapor deposition (AACVD) was carried out. Variable-temperature (VT)-NMR studies were used to probe the fluxional behavior of these alkoxides in solution, and hence their utility as precursors. The synthesis involved the initial isolation of the dimer [GaCl(NMe2)2]2 via a salt metathesis route from GaCl3 and 2 equiv of LiNMe2. This dimer was then reacted with 4 equiv of HOCH2CH2CH2NEt2, resulting in the formation of Ga[μ-(OCH2CH2CH2NEt2)2GaCl2]3 (1). Mass spectrometry and VT-NMR confirmed the oligomeric structure of 1. Tuning of the ligand properties, namely, the chain length and substituents on N, resulted in formation of the monomers [GaCl(OR)2] (R = CH2CH2NEt2, (2); CH2CH2CH2NMe2, (3)). VT-NMR studies, supported by density functional theory calculations, confirmed that the ligands in both 2 and 3 possess a hemilabile coordination to the gallium center, owing to either a shorter carbon backbone (2) or less steric hindrance (3). Both 2 and 3 were selected for use as precursors for AACVD: deposition at 450 °C gave thin films of amorphous Ga2O3, which were subsequently annealed at 1000 °C to afford crystalline Ga2O3 material. The films were fully characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray analysis.

Infants Time Their Smiles to Make Their Moms Smile.

Project description:One of the earliest forms of interaction between mothers and infants is smiling games. While the temporal dynamics of these games have been extensively studied, they are still not well understood. Why do mothers and infants time their smiles the way they do? To answer this question we applied methods from control theory, an approach frequently used in robotics, to analyze and synthesize goal-oriented behavior. The results of our analysis show that by the time infants reach 4 months of age both mothers and infants time their smiles in a purposeful, goal-oriented manner. In our study, mothers consistently attempted to maximize the time spent in mutual smiling, while infants tried to maximize mother-only smile time. To validate this finding, we ported the smile timing strategy used by infants to a sophisticated child-like robot that automatically perceived and produced smiles while interacting with adults. As predicted, this strategy proved successful at maximizing adult-only smile time. The results indicate that by 4 months of age infants interact with their mothers in a goal-oriented manner, utilizing a sophisticated understanding of timing in social interactions. Our work suggests that control theory is a promising technique for both analyzing complex interactive behavior and providing new insights into the development of social communication.

Visible light amination/Smiles cascade: access to phthalazine derivatives.

Project description:We report the synthesis of various phthalazines via a new cascade reaction, initiated by visible light photocatalysis, involving a radical hydroamination reaction followed by a radical Smiles rearrangement. Phthalazine derivatives are obtained in high yields and from a broad scope readily accessible ortho-alkynylsulfonohydrazone precursors. The mild photoredox conditions ensure an excellent functional group tolerance. Application of this strategy to a one-pot protocol starting from the corresponding carbonyl compounds, and subsequent functionalization allow the rapid synthesis of structurally diverse structures.

Social Facilitation of Laughter and Smiles in Preschool Children.

Project description:Surprisingly little is known about the social dimensions of laughter in preschool children. We studied children's responses to amusing video clips in the presence or absence of peers. The sample consisted of 9 boys and 11 girls aged 31-49 months (M 39.8, SD 4.2) who watched three cartoons under three different conditions: individually, in pairs, or in groups of 6 or 8. The social viewing conditions showed significantly higher numbers of laughs and smiles than the individual viewing condition. On average children laughed eight times as much in company as on their own and smiled almost three times as much. No differences were found between pairs and groups, and no association was found between subjective funniness ratings and group size. This suggests that the presence of even a single social partner can change behavior in response to humorous material. It supports the idea that laughter and smiles are primarily flexible social signals rather than reflexive responses to humor.
