Transcriptional silencing in Saccharomyces requires specific nucleosome modifications promoted in part by a complex of Sir proteins that binds to the modified nucleosomes. Recent evidence suggests that modifications of both the histone amino termini and the core domain of nucleosomes contribute to silencing.
