ALD Al2O3-Coated TiO2 Nanotube Layers as Anodes for Lithium-Ion Batteries.

ABSTRACT: The utilization of the anodic TiO2 nanotube layers, with uniform Al2O3 coatings of different thicknesses (prepared by atomic layer deposition, ALD), as the new electrode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), is reported herein. Electrodes with very thin Al2O3 coatings (?1 nm) show a superior electrochemical performance for use in LIBs compared to that of the uncoated TiO2 nanotube layers. A more than 2 times higher areal capacity is received on these coated TiO2 nanotube layers (?75 vs 200 ?Ah/cm2) as well as higher rate capability and coulombic efficiency of the charging and discharging reactions. Reasons for this can be attributed to an increased mechanical stability of the TiO2 nanotube layers upon Al2O3 coating, as well as to an enhanced diffusion of the Li+ ions within the coated nanotube layers. In contrast, thicker ALD Al2O3 coatings result in a blocking of the electrode surface and therefore an areal capacity decrease.

RGO-Coated TiO2 Microcones for High-Rate Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:Reduced graphene oxide (RGO)-coated TiO2 microcones have been synthesized via simple anodization and cyclic voltammetry for use in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Microcones had a perpendicularly oriented hollow core, an anatase structure, and a high surface area, allowing higher capacity than other nanosized TiO2 structures. TiO2 has low electrical conductivity, leading to the limitation of fast charging and high capacity; however, this was improved by the application of an RGO coating in this work. As anode materials of LIB, the obtained RGO microcone showed a capacity of 157 mAh g-1 at 10C (fully charged within ∼360 s) and sustained 1000 cycles with only 0.02% capacity fading per cycle. The capacity was 1.5 times higher than that of conventional microcone. We speculated that the decrease in the charge-transfer resistance (R ct) played a crucial role in increasing the capacity with fast charging.

TiO2 ALD Coating of Amorphous TiO2 Nanotube Layers: Inhibition of the Structural and Morphological Changes Due to Water Annealing.

Project description:The present work presents a strategy to stabilize amorphous anodic self-organized TiO2 nanotube layers against morphological changes and crystallization upon extensive water soaking. The growth of needle-like nanoparticles was observed on the outer and inner walls of amorphous nanotube layers after extensive water soakings, in line with the literature on water annealing. In contrary, when TiO2 nanotube layers uniformly coated by thin TiO2 using atomic layer deposition (ALD) were soaked in water, the growth rates of needle-like nanoparticles were substantially reduced. We investigated the soaking effects of ALD TiO2 coatings with different thicknesses and deposition temperatures. Sufficiently thick TiO2 coatings (≈8.4 nm) deposited at different ALD process temperatures efficiently hamper the reactions between water and F- ions, maintain the amorphous state, and preserve the original tubular morphology. This work demonstrates the possibility of having robust amorphous 1D TiO2 nanotube layers that are very stable in water. This is very practical for diverse biomedical applications that are accompanied by extensive contact with an aqueous environment.

TiO2 Hollow Spheres With Flower-Like SnO2 Shell as Anodes for Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:SnO2 is a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries due to its high theoretical specific capacity and low operation voltage. However, its poor cycling performance hinders its commercial application. In order to improve the cycling stability of SnO2 electrodes, novel flower-like SnO2/TiO2 hollow spheres were prepared by facile hydrothermal method using carbon spheres as templates. Their flower-like shell and mesoporous structure highlighted a large specific surface area and excellent ion migration performance. Their TiO2 hollow sphere matrix and 2D SnO2 nano-flakes ensured good cycle stability. The electrochemical measurements indicated that novel flower-like SnO2/TiO2 hollow spheres delivered a high specific capacity, low irreversible capacity loss and superior rate performance. After 1,000 cycles at current densities of 200 mA g-1, the capacity of the flower-like SnO2/TiO2 hollow spheres was still maintained at 720 mAh g-1. Their rate capacity reached 486 mAh g-1 when the current densities gradually increase to 2,000 mA g-1.

Electrocatalytic activity of lithium polysulfides adsorbed into porous TiO2 coated MWCNTs hybrid structure for lithium-sulfur batteries.

Project description:Lithium-sulfur batteries have attracted great attention because of their high energy density, environmental friendliness, natural abundance and intrinsically low cost of sulfur. However, their commercial applications are greatly hindered by rapid capacity decay due to poor conductivity of electrode, fast dissolution of the intermediate polysulfides into the electrolyte, and the volume expansion of sulfur. Herein, we report a novel composite MWCNTs@TiO2-S nanostructure by grafting TiO2 onto the surface of MWCNTs, followed by incorporating sulfur into the composite. The inner MWCNTs improved the mechanical strength and conductivity of the electrode and the outer TiO2 provided the adsorption sites to immobilize polysulfides due to bonding interaction between TiO2 and polysulfides. The MWCNTs@TiO2-S composite with a mass ratio of 50% (MWCNTs in MWCNTs@TiO2) exhibited the highest electrochemistry performance among all compositing ratios of MWCNTs/TiO2. The performance improvement might be attributed to the downward shift of the apparent Fermi level to a more positive potential and electron rich space region at the interface of MWCNTs-TiO2 that facilitates the reduction of lithium polysulfide at a higher potential. Such a novel hybrid structure can be applicable for electrode design in other energy storage applications.

TiO2-coated LiCoO2 electrodes fabricated by a sputtering deposition method for lithium-ion batteries with enhanced electrochemical performance.

Project description:We fabricated lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2, LCO) electrodes in the absence and presence of TiO2 layers as cathodes for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) using a sputtering deposition method under an Ar atmosphere. In particular, TiO2 coating layers on sputtered LCO electrodes were directly deposited in a layer-by-layer form with varying TiO2 sputtering times from 60 to 120 s. These sputtered electrodes were heated at 600 °C in an air atmosphere for 3 h. The thicknesses of TiO2 layers in TiO2-coated LCO electrodes were controlled from ∼2 to ∼10 nm. These TiO2-coated LCO electrodes exhibited superior electrochemical performance, i.e. high capacities (93-107 mA h g-1@0.5C), improved retention of >60% after 100 cycles, and high-rate cycling properties (64 mA h g-1@1C after 100 cycles). Such an improved performance of TiO2-coated LCO electrodes was found to be attributed to relieved volumetric expansion of LCO and protection of LCO electrodes against HF generated during cycling.

Ternary CNTs@TiO?/CoO Nanotube Composites: Improved Anode Materials for High Performance Lithium Ion Batteries.

Project description:TiO? nanotubes (NTs) synthesized by electrochemical anodization are discussed as very promising anodes for lithium ion batteries, owing to their high structural stability, high surface area, safety, and low production cost. However, their poor electronic conductivity and low Li? ion diffusivity are the main drawbacks that prevent them from achieving high electrochemical performance. Herein, we report the fabrication of a novel ternary carbon nanotubes (CNTs)@TiO?/CoO nanotubes composite by a two-step synthesis method. The preparation includes an initial anodic fabrication of well-ordered TiO?/CoO NTs from a Ti-Co alloy, followed by growing of CNTs horizontally on the top of the oxide films using a simple spray pyrolysis technique. The unique 1D structure of such a hybrid nanostructure with the inclusion of CNTs demonstrates significantly enhanced areal capacity and rate performances compared to pure TiO? and TiO?/CoO NTs, without CNTs tested under identical conditions. The findings reveal that CNTs provide a highly conductive network that improves Li? ion diffusivity, promoting a strongly favored lithium insertion into the TiO?/CoO NT framework, and hence resulting in high capacity and an extremely reproducible high rate capability.

Confronting the Challenges in Lithium Anodes for Lithium Metal Batteries.

Project description:With the low redox potential of -3.04 V (vs SHE) and ultrahigh theoretical capacity of 3862 mAh g-1 , lithium metal has been considered as promising anode material. However, lithium metal battery has ever suffered a trough in the past few decades due to its safety issues. Over the years, the limited energy density of the lithium-ion battery cannot meet the growing demands of the advanced energy storage devices. Therefore, lithium metal anodes receive renewed attention, which have the potential to achieve high-energy batteries. In this review, the history of the lithium anode is reviewed first. Then the failure mechanism of the lithium anode is analyzed, including dendrite, dead lithium, corrosion, and volume expansion of the lithium anode. Further, the strategies to alleviate the lithium anode issues in recent years are discussed emphatically. Eventually, remaining challenges of these strategies and possible research directions of lithium-anode modification are presented to inspire innovation of lithium anode.

Effect of Low-Temperature Al2O3 ALD Coating on Ni-Rich Layered Oxide Composite Cathode on the Long-Term Cycling Performance of Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Project description:Conformal coating of nm-thick Al2O3 layers on electrode material is an effective strategy for improving the longevity of rechargeable batteries. However, solid understanding of how and why surface coatings work the way they do has yet to be established. In this article, we report on low-temperature atomic layer deposition (ALD) of Al2O3 on practical, ready-to-use composite cathodes of NCM622 (60% Ni), a technologically important material for lithium-ion battery applications. Capacity retention and performance of Al2O3-coated cathodes (≤10 ALD growth cycles) are significantly improved over uncoated NCM622 reference cathodes, even under moderate cycling conditions. Notably, the Al2O3 surface shell is preserved after cycling in full-cell configuration for 1400 cycles as revealed by advanced electron microscopy and elemental mapping. While there are no significant differences in terms of bulk lattice structure and transition-metal leaching among the coated and uncoated NCM622 materials, the surface of the latter is found to be corroded to a much greater extent. In particular, detachment of active material from the secondary particles and side reactions with the electrolyte appear to lower the electrochemical activity, thereby leading to accelerated capacity degradation.

Electrocatalytic Performance of Titania Nanotube Arrays Coated with MoS2 by ALD toward the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction.

Project description:The electrochemical splitting of water provides an elegant way to store renewable energy, but it is limited by the cost of the noble metals used as catalysts. Among the catalysts used for the reduction of water to hydrogen, MoS2 has been identified as one of the most promising materials as it can be engineered to provide not only a large surface area but also an abundance of unsaturated and reactive coordination sites. Using Mo[NMe2]4 and H2S as precursors, a desired thickness of amorphous MoS2 can be deposited on TiO2 nanotubes by atomic layer deposition. The identity and structure of the MoS2 film are confirmed by spectroscopic ellipsometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The electrocatalytic performance of MoS2 is quantified as it depends on the tube length and the MoS2 layer thickness through voltammetry, steady-state chronoamperometry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The best sample reaches 10 mA/cm2 current density at 189 mV overpotential in 0.5 M H2SO4. All of the various geometries of our nanostructured electrodes reach an electrocatalytic proficiency comparable with the state-of-the-art MoS2 electrodes, and the dependence of performance parameters on geometry suggests that the system can even be improved further.

Nanocomposite Polymer Gel Electrolyte Based on TiO2 Nanoparticles for Lithium Batteries.

Project description:In this article, the specific features of competitive ionic and molecular transport in nanocomposite systems based on network membranes synthesized by radical polymerization of polyethylene glycol diacrylate in the presence of LiBF4, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, ethylene carbonate (EC), and TiO2 nanopowder (d~21 nm) were studied for 1H, 7Li, 11B, 13C, and 19F nuclei using NMR. The membranes obtained were studied through electrochemical impedance, IR-Fourier spectroscopy, DSC, and TGA. The ionic conductivity of the membranes was up to 4.8 m Scm-1 at room temperature. The operating temperature range was from -40 to 100 °C. Two types of molecular and ionic transport (fast and slow) have been detected by pulsed field gradient NMR. From quantum chemical modeling, it follows that the difficulty of lithium transport is due to the strong chemisorption of BF4- anions with counterions on the surface of TiO2 nanoparticles. The theoretical conclusion about the need to increase the proportion of EC in order to reduce the influence of this effect was confirmed by an experimental study of a system with 4 moles of EC. It has been shown that this approach leads to an increase in lithium conductivity in an ionic liquid medium, which is important for the development of thermostable nanocomposite electrolytes for Li//LiFePO4 batteries with a base of lithium salts and aprotonic imidasolium ionic liquid.
