A multiscale dataset for understanding complex eco-hydrological processes in a heterogeneous oasis system.

ABSTRACT: We introduce a multiscale dataset obtained from Heihe Watershed Allied Telemetry Experimental Research (HiWATER) in an oasis-desert area in 2012. Upscaling of eco-hydrological processes on a heterogeneous surface is a grand challenge. Progress in this field is hindered by the poor availability of multiscale observations. HiWATER is an experiment designed to address this challenge through instrumentation on hierarchically nested scales to obtain multiscale and multidisciplinary data. The HiWATER observation system consists of a flux observation matrix of eddy covariance towers, large aperture scintillometers, and automatic meteorological stations; an eco-hydrological sensor network of soil moisture and leaf area index; hyper-resolution airborne remote sensing using LiDAR, imaging spectrometer, multi-angle thermal imager, and L-band microwave radiometer; and synchronical ground measurements of vegetation dynamics, and photosynthesis processes. All observational data were carefully quality controlled throughout sensor calibration, data collection, data processing, and datasets generation. The data are freely available at figshare and the Cold and Arid Regions Science Data Centre. The data should be useful for elucidating multiscale eco-hydrological processes and developing upscaling methods.

Project description:Isotopic and hydrochemical data from lakes provide direct information on catchment response to changing rainfall, evaporation, nutrient cycling, and the health of ecosystems. These techniques have not been widely applied to lakes in the Southern Hemisphere high latitudes, including Southern Ocean Islands (SOIs) experiencing rapid, significant shifts in climate. Historical work has highlighted the localised nature of geochemical drivers in controlling the hydrochemical evolution of lakes, such as geology, sea spray contribution, vegetation, geographical location, and ice cover extent. The role of groundwater in lake hydrology and hydrochemistry has not been identified until now, and its omission will have major implications for interpreting soil-water-air processes affecting lakes. Here we present the first comprehensive, island-wide hydrochemical and isotopic survey of lakes on a SOI. Forty lakes were examined across Macquarie Island, using comparable methods to identify key environmental processes and their geochemical drivers. Methods include stable carbon (δ13CDOC: dissolved organic carbon and δ13CDIC: dissolved inorganic carbon), oxygen (δ18O), hydrogen (δ2H) and strontium isotopic ratios (87Sr/86Sr) in water. These provide essential baseline data for hydrological, biological, and geochemical lake processes. Lakes on the western side of the island are influenced by sea spray aerosols. In general, it was found that lakes at higher elevations are dilute and those located in lower elevation catchments have experienced more water-rock interactions. The hydrochemical and isotopic tracers suggest that lakes in lower elevations contain more terrestrial sourced ions that may be contributed from groundwater. Increasing temperatures and changing rainfall patterns predicted for the region will lead to shifts in nutrient cycles, and impact the island's unique ecosystems. Future research will focus on long-term monitoring to understand seasonal, annual, and long-term variability to test fundamental hypotheses concerning ecosystem function and the consequences of environmental change on SOIs.

Project description:The Chaco-Pampean Plain (Argentina) is the strongest economic region and the most inhabited in the country, comprising approximately 66% of the country's population (26,500 million) [1]. In this region, surface slopes are very low (<0.1%) and due to the current climatological features, floods and droughts alternate over time. Salinity and alkalinity of water and soil increase towards the flattest sector of the basin, as well as the contents of arsenic and fluoride, which restrict their human use. Worldwide, population growth and global warming, in addition to political decisions, are leading to abrupt land use changes. Under this premise, identifying and quantifying the hydrological processes that control water quantity and its chemical quality become an imperative task [2]. This data article provides a long-term hydrological dataset from a sector of the Chaco-Pampean Plain, the Del Azul creek basin. Hydrological data such as flow rates and piezometric levels, and physical-chemical (i.e., major and minor solutes, and trace elements) and isotopic (δ18O, δ2H; and d-excess) data from rainwater, surface (creek and wetland) and groundwater (at two depths) are available. Rainwater samples are derived from three precipitation collectors installed at different altitudes (monitoring period: 2010-2019; n = 57). Surface water samples were collected at three sampling sites located along the Del Azul Creek and six wetlands (monitoring period: 2018-2019; n = 12). Groundwater samples were collected from 17 piezometers with depths ranging between 3 and 10 m, and from 12 piezometers of 30 m depth, all located throughout the entire basin (monitoring period: 2018-2019; n = 115). Sampling campaigns were performed during the austral dry (summer) and wet (spring) seasons. This dataset provides useful information to understand a) how water moves from recharge to discharge areas, b) how water acquires salinity, and c) how particular solutes of concern, such as arsenic and fluoride, are distributed in space and time across in an extensive plain.

Project description:Base flow, as an important component of runoff, is the main recharge source of runoff during the dry period, especially in the Yellow River Basin located in a semiarid area. However, the process of obtaining base flow has great uncertainty when considering hydrological simulations. Thus, in this study, a three-step framework is proposed, i.e., the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is used to calibrate model parameters under different subbasin partitioning schemes; then, the hydrograph separation (HYSEP), Improved United Kingdom Institute of Hydrology (IUKIH) and Lyne and Hollick filter (Lyne-Hollick) methods are used to separate the baseflow from the total runoff process, thereby exploring the uncertainty impacts of baseflow segmentation methods on the hydrological simulation process. The subsample-variance-decomposition method is used to quantify the independent and interactive uncertainty in the hydrological simulation process. The results show that the Topmodel model can be better applied to the source area of the Yellow River (the KGE values in the Sub5, Sub13, Sub21, Sub29, Sub37 and Sub13 scenarios were 0.91 and 0.65, 0.94 and 0.86, 0.94 and 0.88, 0.92 and 0.82, 0.95 and 0.89, and 0.92 and 0.83, respectively). The subbasin division uncertainty had less impact on simulated streamflow during the dry season and had a significant impact in the wet season, such as, the subbasin division uncertainty caused the difference between the median of the simulated streamflow to be as high as 213.09 m3/s in August but only 107.19 m3/s in January; Meanwhile, the baseflow segmentation method uncertainty has a significant impact on the annual mean streamflow values under different subbasin segmentation schemes. In addition, the baseflow values estimated by the Lyne-Hollick and HYSEP methods were obviously higher than those estimated by the IUKIH method during the wet season. The uncertainty influence of subbasin partitioning schemes and baseflow segmentation methods had significant differences on hydrological processes in different periods. The uncertainty influence of subbasin partitioning schemes was dominant in the dry season, accounting for 86%, and the baseflow segmentation methods took second place, accounting for approximately 12%. In the wet season, the uncertainty influence of the baseflow segmentation methods was gradually weakened, which may have been due to the uncertainty influence of the hydrological model. These results provide a reference for the calibration and validation of hydrological model parameters using baseflow components.
