Self-assembling 1D core/shell microrods by the introduction of additives: a one-pot and shell-tunable method.

ABSTRACT: Herein, we have developed a one-pot method for the fabrication of one-dimensional core/shell microrods with tunable shell compositions by the introduction of additives. Crystalline dimethyl melamine hydrochloride was utilized as the core, while melamine derivatives with different functional groups, such as pyrene, thiophene and naphthalene diimide, served as additives to regulate the core morphology and were adsorbed as the shell. The length and width of these one-dimensional structures can be tuned by varying the molar ratio of core and shell molecules as well as their total concentration. Through X-ray diffraction, the detailed molecular arrangements within the core of the microrods were revealed, and the selective effect of additives on specific crystal faces was evaluated. It is anticipated that this work may provide a facile approach for the fabrication of one-dimensional functional materials.

One-pot one-step synthesis of Au@SiO2 core-shell nanoparticles and their shell-thickness-dependent fluorescent properties.

Project description:Herein, we report a one-pot one-step method for the preparation of Au@SiO2 core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) via a facile heating treatment of an alcoholic-aqueous solution of chloroauric acid (HAuCl4), 2-methylaminoethanol (2-MAE), cetyltrimethylammonimum bromide (CTAB), and tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS). The size of the Au core and the thickness of the silica shell can be easily controlled by simply adjusting the volume of HAuCl4 and TEOS, respectively, which can hardly be achieved by other approaches. The as-prepared Au@SiO2 core-shell NPs exhibited shell-thickness-dependent fluorescent properties. The optimum fluorescence enhancement of fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) was found to occur at a silica shell thickness of 34 nm with an enhancement factor of 5.0. This work provides a new approach for the preparation of Au@SiO2 core-shell NPs and promotes their potential applications in ultrasensitive analyte detection, theranostics, catalysts and thin-film solar cells.

Convenient and Template-Free Route to One-Pot Green Synthesis of Polyrhodanine Core-Shell Nanoparticles.

Project description:In this publication, a copper acetate-mediated rhodanine polymerization reaction is examined. It is demonstrated that at room temperature, Cu(II) acetate complexes with rhodanine generate solid nanospheres, which, upon heating in a microwave, results in polyrhodanine core-shell nano- and microsphere particles. The structural analysis of the polyrhodanine nanosphere produced by this efficient microwave-initiated method was conducted by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. In addition, it is verified that this template-free, efficient, and versatile synthesis of polyrhodanine nanospheres can also be accomplished by introducing a strong oxidant KMnO4 as a cocatalyst with copper acetate without compromising the morphology of the resulting core-shell nanospheres. It is also demonstrated that the polyrhodanine nanospheres can be used to adsorb methyl orange dye, a known contaminant in industrial wastewater.

One-Pot Solvothermal Synthesis of Highly Emissive, Sodium-Codoped, LaF? and BaLaF? Core-Shell Upconverting Nanocrystals.

Project description:We report a one-pot solvothermal synthesis of sub-10 nm, dominant ultraviolet (UV) emissive upconverting nanocrystals (UCNCs), based on sodium-codoped LaF? and BaLaF? (0.5%Tm; 20%Yb) and their corresponding core@shell derivatives. Elemental analysis shows a Na-codopant in these crystal systems of ~20% the total cation content; X-ray diffraction (XRD) data indicate a shift in unit cell dimensions consistent with these small codopant ions. Similarly, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic (XPS) analysis reveals primarily substitution of Na? for La3+ ions (97% of total Na? codopant) in the crystal system, and interstitial Na? (3% of detected Na?) and La3+ (3% of detected La3+) present in (Na)LaF? and only direct substitution of Na? for Ba2+ in Ba(Na)LaF?. In each case, XPS analysis of La 3d lines show a decrease in binding energy (0.08-0.25 eV) indicating a reduction in local crystal field symmetry surrounding rare earth (R.E.3+) ions, permitting otherwise disallowed R.E. UC transitions to be enhanced. Studies that examine the impact of laser excitation power upon luminescence intensity were conducted over 2.5-100 W/cm² range to elucidate UC mechanisms that populate dominant UV emitting states. Low power saturation of Tm3+ ³F? and ³H? states was observed and noted as a key initial condition for effective population of the ¹D? and ¹I? UV emitting states, via Tm-Tm cross-relaxation.

Fast and Efficient Sun Light Photocatalytic Activity of Au_ZnO Core-Shell Nanoparticles Prepared by a One-Pot Synthesis.

Project description:Gold nanostructures absorb visible light and show localized surface plasmon resonance bands in the visible region. Semiconducting ZnO nanostructures are excellent for ultraviolet detection, thanks to their wide band gap, large free exciton binding energy, and high electron mobility. Therefore, the coupling of gold and ZnO nanostructures represents the best-suited way to boost photodetection. With the above perspective, we report on the high photocatalytic activity of some Au_ZnO core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) recently prepared by a one-pot synthesis in which a [zinc citrate]- complex acted as the ZnO precursor, a reducing agent for Au3+, and a capping anion for the obtained Au NPs. The overall nanostructures proved to be Au(111) NPs surrounded by a thin layer of [zinc citrate]- that evolved to Au_ZnO core-shell nanostructures. Worthy of note, with this photocatalyst, sun light efficiently decomposes a standard methylene blue solution according to ISO 10678:2010. We rationalized photodetection, reaction rate, and quantum efficiency.

One-pot preparation of nanoporous Ag-Cu@Ag core-shell alloy with enhanced oxidative stability and robust antibacterial activity.

Project description:Metallic core-shell nanostructures have inspired prominent research interests due to their better performances in catalytic, optical, electric, and magnetic applications as well as the less cost of noble metal than monometallic nanostructures, but limited by the complicated and expensive synthesis approaches. Development of one-pot and inexpensive method for metallic core-shell nanostructures' synthesis is therefore of great significance. A novel Cu network supported nanoporous Ag-Cu alloy with an Ag shell and an Ag-Cu core was successfully synthesized by one-pot chemical dealloying of Zr-Cu-Ag-Al-O amorphous/crystalline composite, which provides a new way to prepare metallic core-shell nanostructures by a simple method. The prepared nanoporous Ag-Cu@Ag core-shell alloy demonstrates excellent air-stability at room temperature and enhanced oxidative stability even compared with other reported Cu@Ag core-shell micro-particles. In addition, the nanoporous Ag-Cu@Ag core-shell alloy also possesses robust antibacterial activity against E. Coli DH5α. The simple and low-cost synthesis method as well as the excellent oxidative stability promises the nanoporous Ag-Cu@Ag core-shell alloy potentially wide applications.

Synthesis and characterization of noble metal-titania core-shell nanostructures with tunable shell thickness.

Project description:Core-shell nanostructures have found applications in many fields, including surface enhanced spectroscopy, catalysis and solar cells. Titania-coated noble metal nanoparticles, which combine the surface plasmon resonance properties of the core and the photoactivity of the shell, have great potential for these applications. However, the controllable synthesis of such nanostructures remains a challenge due to the high reactivity of titania precursors. Hence, a simple titania coating method that would allow better control over the shell formation is desired. A sol-gel based titania coating method, which allows control over the shell thickness, was developed and applied to the synthesis of Ag@TiO2 and Au@TiO2 with various shell thicknesses. The morphology of the synthesized structures was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Their sizes and shell thicknesses were determined using tunable resistive pulse sensing (TRPS) technique. The optical properties of the synthesized structures were characterized using UV-vis spectroscopy. Ag@TiO2 and Au@TiO2 structures with shell thickness in the range of ≈40-70 nm and 90 nm, for the Ag and Au nanostructures respectively, were prepared using a method we developed and adapted, consisting of a change in the titania precursor concentration. The synthesized nanostructures exhibited significant absorption in the UV-vis range. The TRPS technique was shown to be a very useful tool for the characterization of metal-metal oxide core-shell nanostructures.

Bioengineered vaults: self-assembling protein shell-lipophilic core nanoparticles for drug delivery.

Project description:We report a novel approach to a new class of bioengineered, monodispersed, self-assembling vault nanoparticles consisting of a protein shell exterior with a lipophilic core interior designed for drug and probe delivery. Recombinant vaults were engineered to contain a small amphipathic ?-helix derived from the nonstructural protein 5A of hepatitis C virus, thereby creating within the vault lumen a lipophilic microenvironment into which lipophilic compounds could be reversibly encapsulated. Multiple types of electron microscopy showed that attachment of this peptide resulted in larger than expected additional mass internalized within the vault lumen attributable to incorporation of host lipid membrane constituents spanning the vault waist (>35 nm). These bioengineered lipophilic vaults reversibly associate with a sample set of therapeutic compounds, including all-trans retinoic acid, amphotericin B, and bryostatin 1, incorporating hundreds to thousands of drug molecules per vault nanoparticle. Bryostatin 1 is of particular therapeutic interest because of its ability to potently induce expression of latent HIV, thus representing a preclinical lead in efforts to eradicate HIV/AIDS. Vaults loaded with bryostatin 1 released free drug, resulting in activation of HIV from provirus latency in vitro and induction of CD69 biomarker expression following intravenous injection into mice. The ability to preferentially and reversibly encapsulate lipophilic compounds into these novel bioengineered vault nanoparticles greatly advances their potential use as drug delivery systems.

Facile One-pot Transformation of Iron Oxides from Fe2O3 Nanoparticles to Nanostructured Fe3O4@C Core-Shell Composites via Combustion Waves.

Project description:The development of a low-cost, fast, and large-scale process for the synthesis and manipulation of nanostructured metal oxides is essential for incorporating materials with diverse practical applications. Herein, we present a facile one-pot synthesis method using combustion waves that simultaneously achieves fast reduction and direct formation of carbon coating layers on metal oxide nanostructures. Hybrid composites of Fe2O3 nanoparticles and nitrocellulose on the cm scale were fabricated by a wet impregnation process. We demonstrated that self-propagating combustion waves along interfacial boundaries between the surface of the metal oxide and the chemical fuels enabled the release of oxygen from Fe2O3. This accelerated reaction directly transformed Fe2O3 into Fe3O4 nanostructures. The distinctive color change from reddish-brown Fe2O3 to dark-gray Fe3O4 confirmed the transition of oxidation states and the change in the fundamental properties of the material. Furthermore, it simultaneously formed carbon layers of 5-20 nm thickness coating the surfaces of the resulting Fe3O4 nanoparticles, which may aid in maintaining the nanostructures and improving the conductivity of the composites. This newly developed use of combustion waves in hybridized nanostructures may permit the precise manipulation of the chemical compositions of other metal oxide nanostructures, as well as the formation of organic/inorganic hybrid nanostructures.

One-pot synthesis of monodisperse CoFe2O4@Ag core-shell nanoparticles and their characterization.

Project description:In recent years, monodispersed magnetic nanoparticles with a core/shell structure are expected for their wide applications including magnetic fluid, recoverable catalysts, and biological analysis. However, their synthesis method needs numerous processes such as solvent substitution, exchange of protective agents, and centrifugation. A simple and rapid method for the synthesis of monodispersed core-shell nanoparticles makes it possible to accelerate their further applications. This paper describes a simple and rapid one-pot synthesis of core (CoFe2O4)-shell (Ag) nanoparticles with high monodispersity. The synthesized nanoparticles showed plasmonic light absorption owing to the Ag shell. Moreover, the magnetic property of the nanoparticles had a soft magnetic behavior at room temperature and a hard magnetic behavior at 5 K. In addition, the nanoparticles showed high monodispersity with a low polydispersity index (PDI) value of 0.083 in hexane.

Tunable plasmonic core-shell heterostructure design for broadband light driven catalysis.

Project description:Considerable effort has been devoted to manipulating the optical absorption of metal nanostructures for diverse applications. However, it still remains a challenge to develop a general and flexible method to promote broadband absorption of metal nanostructures without changing their size and shape. Here, we report a new strategy of hybridizing two conceptually different optical models to realize broadband absorption enhancement of metal nanoparticles (NPs), which is enabled by constructing a core-shell heterostructure, consisting of a spherical dielectric core covered by a metal NPs interlayer and tunable semiconductor shell. This approach integrates the interfacial photon management, photoexcitation of metal NPs and injection of hot charge carriers into the semiconductor shell, and results in distinctly enhanced hot charge carrier generation and transfer, thereby boosting the broad-spectrum light driven catalysis. The structure-plasmon-catalysis interplay of the heterostructure is comprehensively studied and optimized. This proof-of-concept proves to be generally feasible by varying the type of both metal NPs and support medium, opening a new avenue to control the optoelectronic properties of materials.
