Description of Pseudacrobeles (Pseudacrobeles) curvatus sp. n. (Cephalobidae: Rhabditida) in South Korea.

ABSTRACT: Pseudacrobeles (Pseudacrobeles) curvatus sp. n. was collected from potato fields in Gyeongsangnam-do, South Korea. The new species shares morphological characters typical of the genus Pseudacrobeles, including three lateral incisures that fade posteriorly near the phasmid openings. The new species differs from other Pseudacrobeles species by its smaller body size and a comparatively shorter corpus relative to the isthmus length. In this study, we provide a comparison of morphometrics and diagnostic features of Pseudacrobeles species and molecular sequence data from the D2-D3 regions of the 28S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) and ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 region of rDNA from the new species, which can be used as molecular barcode sequences.

Project description:The genus Cryptopimpla Taschenberg is recorded for the first time in South Korea. Four species are recognized; among these, two species, C.aspeculosus Kang & Lee, sp. n. and C.pentagonalis Kang & Lee, sp. n., are described as new to science. For the other two species, C.brevigena Kuslitzkii and C.carinifacialis Sheng, the males were hitherto unknown and are described here. An illustrated identification key is provided for the species of Cryptopimpla known from South Korea.

Description of Spinocephalus tessellatus n. gen., n. sp. (Rhabditida, Cephalobidae) from Iran, a nematode with a new morphological pattern at lip region.

Project description:A new genus and new species of the family Cephalobidae, subfamily Cephalobinae, named Spinocephalus tessellatus n. gen., n. sp. is described from Iran. Body 0.55-0.67 mm long, cuticle with tessellations, lateral field with two tessellated longitudinal wings, lip region with six triangular lips, primary axils deep and V-shaped with two conoid-elongate guard processes that originate from each lip, secondary axils deep and U-shaped with one thorn-like process (labial probolae?) in lateral view with a small rounded protuberance fused to the oral plate having triradiate symmetry more developed at the acute margin toward each primary axil, oral opening hexagonal, amphids large and clearly rounded to slightly oval, stoma cephaloboid with cheilostom with minute and rounded rhabdia, pharynx cephaloboid with corpus subcylindrical and isthmus very long being 1.4-1.7 times corpus length, nerve ring surrounds the isthmus, excretory pore at the level of the isthmus. Female monodelphic-prodelphic, spermatheca as long as the body diam., post-vulval uterine sac 0.8-1.0 times body diameter, tail conoid with small rounded terminus. Male monorchic, spicules 24-26 µm long, gubernaculum 11-14 µm long, tail conical and ventrally curved with small rounded terminus. Morphological, including SEM observations, and molecular (based on 18S and 28S rDNA) analyses revealed its relationship with the genera Acromoldavicus and Nothacrobeles.

Scandinavium lactucae sp. nov. Isolated from Healthy Lettuce in South Korea.

Project description:Four Gram-negative, facultative anaerobic, oxidase-negative and catalase-positive strains were isolated from lettuce sample collected from test beds at the National Institute of Agricultural Sciences in Wanju, South Korea. The whole genome sequences of the strains ranged from 4,624,629 to 4,849,846 bp in size, with DNA G + C contents of 54.32 to 54.56 mol%. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene and four housekeeping (atpD, gyrB, infB, and rpoB) gene sequences showed that the four strains clustered closely together with Scandinavium type strains within the Enterobacteriaceae family. Moreover, the average nucleotide identity and digital DNA-DNA hybridization value of the proposed type strain (V105_6T) with the closely related Scandinavium type strains were in the range of 85.71-86.16% and 30.2-31.2%, respectively, which were all below the species delineation threshold values. The major cellular fatty acid of V105_6T was C16:0. Growth was observed at 7, 10 and 35 °C, and in the presence of 7% NaCl concentration. Based on phenotypic and genotypic results, strain V105_6T represents a novel species of the genus Scandinavium, for which the name Scandinavium lactucae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is V105_6T (= LMG 33389T = DSM 117134T).

Cryptaphelenchus varicaudatus n. sp. (Rhabditida: Ektaphelenchinae) from Tehran Province, Iran.

Project description:Cryptaphelenchus varicaudatus n. sp. is described and illustrated. It was isolated from bark samples of dead or dying pine (Pinus spp.) trees with bark beetle frass and galleries, in Tehran province. The new species has 275- to 367-µm-long females (a medium-sized species) with distinctly annulated cuticle having three bands in lateral fields, lip region continuous with body contour, delicate knobbed stylet, monodelphic-prodelphic reproductive system with distinct spermatheca, short postvulval uterine sac (PUS), transverse vulval slit with raised posterior lip and body narrowing behind it, sclerotized vagina, simple intestine ending in a blind sac, having no rectum but vestigial anus in some specimens, and distal body end tip (tail tip) with variation in morphology (shape), from sharply or slightly pointed to bluntly rounded. Males of the new species are common, but less frequent than females, characterized by shorter body (235-278 µm long) compared to females, their posterior body end more ventrally bent, arcuate separate spicules with well-developed wide condyles, distinct rostrum having sharp, attenuated tip. The precloacal single supplement (P1) and the distally located pair of caudal papillae close to tail tip were only observed. The new species is morphologically compared with the species of the genus having short PUS and similar body end morphology. In molecular phylogenetic analyses using 1520- and 698-nt-long sequences of small subunit (SSU) and large subunit (LSU) rDNA D2/D3 fragments, the new species formed a clade with two currently available GenBank-derived, unspecified isolates/sequences in SSU and three other isolates/sequences in LSU trees, respectively.

South American Nothochrysinae (Neuroptera, Chrysopidae): I. Description of Nothochrysaehrenbergi sp. nov.

Project description:A new species, Nothochrysaehrenbergi sp. nov., is described from Chile; it is the first species of Nothochrysa to be reported from the Southern Hemisphere and only the second from the New World. The genus now contains six extant species as well as two species known from late Oligocene and Miocene fossils. An updated catalog of the valid Nothochrysa species is presented, and three nomina dubia are discussed. The inclusion of the new species in Nothochrysa is well supported by morphological features. However, it and other species currently in the genus also share significant features with Archaeochrysa, an older genus of Nothochrysinae which is known only from the Eocene (Ypresian) to the late Oligocene. It therefore appears that N.ehrenbergi is among the least derived Nothochrysa species, and that the separation of Archaeochrysa from Nothochrysa is open to question and further examination.

Onthodiplogaster japonica n. gen., n. sp. (Rhabditida: Diplogastridae) isolated from Onthophagus sp. (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) from Japan.

Project description:A diplogastrid nematode was isolated from a dung beetle, Onthophagus sp., collected from a rotten mushroom in Kyoto, Japan. The species is characterised by its cheilostomatal shape, separated into 12 narrow plates (rugae), deep stegostom, large ellipsoidal amphids, conical female tail and characteristic receptaculum seminis in the female. Based on its phylogenetic status and stomatal composition, the species is typologically similar to two other diplogastrid genera, Neodiplogaster and Mononchoides. The species can be distinguished from these two genera by the size and shape of the amphid (small pore in Neodiplogaster), female tail shape (long and filiform in Mononchoides) and presence of receptaculum seminis (absence in the two nominal genera), and is described as a monotypic member of a new genus, Onthodiplogaster japonica n. gen., n. sp. Observation of feeding behaviour suggested that O. japonica n. gen., n. sp. does not show clear stomatal dimorphism or polymorphism, which is found in its close relatives, but the species can feed on nematodes (predation), fungi and bacteria. This monomorphic omnivory possibly represents its habitat of dung and other rotten materials, where the environment is biologically divergent, and its condition changes rapidly.

The Multi-Institutional Health Screening Records Database of South Korea: Description and Evaluation of Its Characteristics.

Project description:This study sought to describe and to evaluate the characteristics of the Health Screening Records Database (HSRD) of the Korea Association of Health Promotion as a data source for epidemiologic studies. The HSRD was compared to a National Health Insurance Service-Health Screening Cohort (NHIS-HEALS) database for 2015. Common variables between the databases were selected, and sex-based analyses were conducted. The HSRD showed statistical concordance when NHIS-HEALS estimates fell within the HSRD estimate's 95% confidence interval. The HSRD and NHIS-HEALS included 946461 and 111690 participants in health screening programs, respectively. Compared to the NHIS-HEALS, the HSRD had more female (55.2% vs. 42.6%) but fewer older adult participants (34.4% vs. 51.2%). Virtually all variables had clinical concordance, with some having statistical concordance as well, among both general and life-transition program participants. The HSRD comprised more clinical information over a wider age range in contrast to the NHIS-HEALS, while showing clinical concordance. Providing more comprehensive clinical data, the HSRD may serve as an alternative resource for epidemiologic studies.

Discopersicus hexagrammatus n. sp. (Rhabditida: Tylenchidae), the second species of the genus

Project description:Abstract Discopersicus hexagrammatus n. sp., is described and illustrated from a population associated with the rhizosphere of carrot (Daucus carota L.) in Dezful, Khuzestan province, south-western Iran. Based on morphological and morphometric data, the new species is characterized by a 601-734 µm long body, a prominent perioral labial disc and oblique amphidial slits, 10-11 µm long stylet, vulva at 65-67% of body length, 15.5-17 µm long spicules, and an elongate conoid tail with a pointed terminus. It is the second species of the genus Discopersicus and differs from its counterpart D. iranicus, by its anterior position of vulva, shorter stylet, lower M.B. ratio, different shape of tail tip, and shorter spicules in male specimens. A molecular phylogenetic analysis using the D2-D3 expansion segments of 28S rDNA sequences, placed the new species in close relationship with five sequences of the genus Boleodorus.
