Integral membrane proteins fold inefficiently and are susceptible to turnover via the endoplasmic reticulum-associated degradation (ERAD) pathway. During ERAD, misfolded proteins are recognized by molecular chaperones, polyubiquitinated, and retrotranslocated to the cytoplasm for proteasomal degradation.
