An update on psoriasis and metabolic syndrome: A meta-analysis of observational studies.

ABSTRACT: The relationship between psoriasis and metabolic syndrome is not well understood. Though multiple epidemiologic studies have suggested a link between psoriasis and metabolic syndrome, there is a lack of a comprehensive meta-analysis synthesizing the results of all available observational studies to date. In this meta-analysis, we examined global data on the relationship between psoriasis and odds of metabolic syndrome by searching for studies published between 1946-2016. Specifically, we analyzed the results from 35 observational studies from 20 countries with 1,450,188 total participants, of which 46,714 were psoriasis patients. The pooled odds ratio based on random effects analysis was 2.14 (95% CI 1.84-2.48). Publication bias was present, as evidenced by an Egger test and graphical visualization through a funnel plot (p = 0.001). Based on this comprehensive meta-analysis, psoriasis patients have higher odds of having metabolic syndrome when compared with the general population.

Vitamin C and Metabolic Syndrome: A Meta-Analysis of Observational Studies.

Project description:Background: The association between vitamin C and metabolic syndrome (MetS) has been evaluated in several epidemiological studies with conflicting results. This meta-analysis was therefore employed to further investigate the above issue. Methods: The observational studies on the associations of dietary and circulating (serum and plasma) vitamin C levels with MetS were searched in the PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase database up to April 2021. The pooled relative risk (RR) of MetS for the highest vs. lowest dietary and circulating vitamin C levels and the standard mean difference (SMD) of dietary and circulating vitamin C levels for MetS vs. control subjects were calculated, respectively. Results: A total of 28 observational studies were identified in this meta-analysis. Specifically, 23 studies were related to the dietary vitamin C level. The overall multivariable-adjusted RR demonstrated that the dietary vitamin C level was inversely associated with MetS (RR = 0.93, 95% CI: 0.88-0.97; P = 0.003). Moreover, the overall combined SMD showed that the dietary vitamin C level in MetS was lower than that in control subjects (SMD = -0.04, 95% CI: -0.08 to -0.01; P = 0.024). With regard to the circulating vitamin C level, 11 studies were included. The overall multivariable-adjusted RR demonstrated that the circulating vitamin C level was inversely associated with MetS (RR = 0.60, 95% CI: 0.49-0.74; P < 0.001). In addition, the overall combined SMD showed that the circulating vitamin C level in MetS was lower than that in control subjects (SMD=-0.82, 95%CI: -1.24 to -0.40; P < 0.001). Conclusions: Current evidence suggests that both dietary and circulating vitamin C level is inversely associated with MetS. However, due to the limitation of the available evidence, more well-designed prospective studies are still needed.

Sleep duration and metabolic syndrome in adult populations: a meta-analysis of observational studies.

Project description:ObjectiveEpidemiological studies have repeatedly investigated the association between sleep duration and metabolic syndrome. However, the results have been inconsistent. This meta-analysis aimed to summarize the current evidence from cross-sectional and prospective cohort studies that evaluated this.Data sourcesRelevant studies were identified by systematically searching the PubMed, Cochrane CENTRAL, EMBASE and PsycINFO databases through November 2012 without language restriction.Study selectionWe identified 12 cross-sectional studies with 76 027 participants including 14 404 cases of metabolic syndrome, and 3 cohort studies with 2055 participants and 283 incident cases of metabolic syndrome.ResultsFor short sleep durations (<5 to 6 h), the odds ratios (OR) was 1.27 (95% confidence interval (CI)=1.10-1.48, I(2)=75.5%) in the 12 cross-sectional studies and 1.62 (95% CI=0.74-3.55, I(2)=71.4%) in the 3 cohort studies; for long sleep durations (>8 to 10 h), the OR was 1.23 (95% CI=1.02-1.49, I(2)=75.8%) in the 11 cross-sectional studies and 1.62 (95% CI=0.86-3.04, I(2)=0.0%) in the 2 cohort studies.ConclusionsShort and long sleep durations are risky behaviors for increasing the risk of metabolic syndrome and thus have important public health implications, as sleep habits are amenable to behavioral interventions. The available data are sparse, and further studies, especially longitudinal studies, are needed to facilitate a better understanding of these associations.

Psoriasis and cardiovascular disorders: association or epiphenomenon? Meta-analysis of observational studies.

Project description:Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease believed to be correlated with numerous cardiovascular risk factors including increased blood pressure, elevated blood cholesterol level, diabetes, inactivity, high body mass index (obesity) and dyslipidaemia. The present meta-analysis intends to assess the association between psoriasis and cardiovascular risk factors. Three hundred and fifty articles were primarily screened using NCBI MEDLINE/PubMed and Cochrane library from its inception until June 30, 2018. Of these, 26 observational studies depending upon the inclusion and exclusion criteria were included in the study with 17,672 psoriasis patients and 66,407 non-psoriasis subjects. The psoriasis patients were found to be at significantly increased risk of systolic blood pressure (SBP) [ORs 2.31 (95% CI 1.12, 4.74)], diastolic blood pressure (DBP) [ORs 2.31 (95% CI 1.58, 3.38)], abdominal obesity [ORs 1.90 (95% CI 1.45, 2.50)] and triglycerides [ORs 1.80 (95% CI 1.29, 2.51)] as compared to non-psoriasis subjects. The subgroup analyses of studies based on the continents revealed that psoriasis patients from Middle East are prone to higher risk factors of CVD including increased levels of triglyceride, cholesterol, DBP, SBP, fasting blood sugar, body mass index and decreased HDL levels, whereas psoriasis patients from European population reported increased LDL-C and waist circumference. The present study supports a significant association between psoriasis and incidence of major adverse cardiovascular events. Contrary to the previous literature, our finding suggests that hypertension is a highly associative condition in psoriasis. The findings of this study could be validated amongst well-defined cohorts of patients with psoriasis individually in different regions to confirm the implication of the study.

The risk of metabolic syndrome in patients with rheumatoid arthritis: a meta-analysis of observational studies.

Project description:BackgroundObservational studies suggest an association between the incidence of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS). However, the relationship between RA and MetS is controversial and research in this area is currently lacking.ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to assess whether the prevalence of MetS was higher in a group of RA patients compared to subjects without RA.DesignA PubMed database search was conducted during April 2013 to identify observational studies of RA and risk of MetS. Reference lists of retrieved articles were also reviewed. Two authors independently extracted information on the study design, the characteristics of the study participants, exposure and outcome assessments, and the method used to control for potential confounding factors. A random-effects model was used for the risk estimates.ResultsOur meta-analysis of four cross-sectional controlled studies plus eight case-control studies involving a total of 2283 cases and 4403 controls identified a significant association between RA and risk of MetS, with an overall OR of 1.24 (95% CI, 1.03-1.50).ConclusionThis meta-analysis provides further evidence supporting patients with RA have a higher prevalence of MetS than subjects without RA. In addition, the geographic region of the population and the criteria used for MetS diagnosis could influence the association. However, these observations would need to be evaluated using prospective, randomized studies.

Dairy products consumption and metabolic syndrome in adults: systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies.

Project description:The association of dairy products consumption with risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS) has been inconsistently reported in observational studies. A systematic review and meta-analysis of published observational studies was conducted to quantitatively evaluate this association. Relevant studies were identified by searching PubMed and EMBASE databases and by carefully checking the bibliographies of retrieved full reports and related reviews. Eligible studies were observational studies that investigated the association between dairy products consumption and risk of MetS in adults, with risk estimates available. Random-effects model was assigned to calculate the summary risk estimates. The final analysis included 15 cross-sectional studies, one case-control study and seven prospective cohort studies. Higher dairy consumption significantly reduced MetS by 17% in the cross-sectional/case-control studies (odds ratio = 0.83, 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.73-0.94), and by 14% (relative risk [RR] = 0.86, 95% CI, 0.79-0.92) in cohort studies. The inverse dairy-MetS association was consistent in subgroup and sensitivity analyses. The dose-response analysis of the cohort studies conferred a significant 6% (RR = 0.94, 95% CI, 0.90-0.98) reduction in the risk of MetS for each increment in dairy consumption of one serving/d. No significant publication bias was observed. Our findings suggest an inverse dose-response relationship between dairy consumption and risk of MetS.

Metabolic syndrome in relation to dietary acid load: a dose–response meta-analysis of observational studies

Project description:Background and aim Several studies have identified that dietary acid load (DAL) may be associated with the odds of metabolic syndrome (MetS); however, the evidence is inconclusive. This dose–response meta-analysis aimed to examine the relation of DAL to MetS. Methods A systematic literature search was carried out in PubMed and Scopus up to April 2023 for pertinent studies evaluating the relation of DAL scores, including potential renal acid load (PRAL) and net endogenous acid production (NEAP), to the odds of MetS. The odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were pooled using a random-effects meta-analysis to test the association. Results Eight studies, with an overall sample size of 31,351 participants, were included in this meta-analysis. Higher DAL scores were significantly related to the elevated odds of MetS (NEAP: OR = 1.42, 95%CI = 1.12–1.79; PRAL: OR = 1.76, 95%CI = 1.11–2.78), with significant evidence of heterogeneity across studies. The linear dose–response analysis proposed that a 10 mEq/day elevation in NEAP and PRAL was linked to a 2% (OR = 1.02, 95%CI = 1.001–1.05) and 28% (OR = 1.28, 95%CI = 1.11–1.47) increased odds of MetS, respectively. No non-linear association was observed between MetS and NEAP (P-non-linearity = 0.75) and PRAL (P-non-linearity = 0.92). Conclusion This study revealed a significant direct relationship between DAL and MetS. Therefore, lower acidogenic diets are suggested for the prevention of MetS.

Prognostic Impact of Metabolic Syndrome in Patients With Heart Failure: A Meta-Analysis of Observational Studies.

Project description:Background: The metabolic syndrome (MS) is significantly associated with the risk of incident heart failure (HF). However, there are still great controversies about the impact of MS on the prognosis in patients with established HF. This meta-analysis aimed to ascertain the effect of MS on the prognosis in patients with HF. Methods: We searched multiple electronic databases, including PubMed, Opengrey, EMBASE, and Cochran Library, for potential studies up to February 15, 2021. Observational studies that reported the impact of MS on the prognosis in patients with established HF were included for meta-analysis. Results: Ten studies comprising 18,590 patients with HF were included for meta-analysis. The median follow-up duration of the included studies was 2.4 years. Compared with HF patients without MS, the risk of all-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality was not increased in HF with MS (HR = 1.04, 95% CI = 0.88-1.23 for all-cause mortality; HR = 1.66, 95% CI = 0.56-4.88 for cardiovascular mortality, respectively). However, there was a significant increase in composited cardiovascular events in the HF patients with MS compared with those without MS (HR = 1.73, 95% CI = 1.23-2.45). Conclusions: In patients with established HF, the presence of MS did not show an association on the risk of all-cause mortality or cardiovascular mortality, while it may increase the risk of composite cardiovascular events.

Association between metabolic syndrome and endometrial cancer risk: a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies.

Project description:Existing evidence has revealed inconsistent results on the association between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and endometrial cancer (EC) risk. Herein, we aim to better understand this association. Systematic searches of PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science through 12 December 2019 were conducted. Observational studies that provided risk estimates of MetS and EC risk were eligible. The quality of the included studies was judged based on the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. Summary odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using a random-effects model. Six studies, comprising 17,772 EC cases and 150,371 participants were included. MetS, diagnosed according to the criteria of the National Cholesterol Education Program-Third Adult Treatment Panel, was associated with an increased risk of EC (OR: 1.62; 95% CI = 1.26-2.07) with substantial heterogeneity (I2 = 78.3%). Furthermore, we found that women with MetS, diagnosed according to the criteria of the International Diabetes Federation, had a significantly higher risk of EC compared to healthy controls (OR: 1.45; 95% CI = 1.16-1.81; I2 = 64.6%). Our findings were generally consistent with the main results in the majority of prespecified subgroups, as well as in sensitivity analyses. In conclusion, MetS is associated with EC risk.

Parity and Metabolic Syndrome Risk: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of 15 Observational Studies With 62,095 Women.

Project description:BackgroundEpidemiological studies have provided inconsistent evidence of the association between parity and metabolic syndrome (MetS) risk. We conducted this first systematic review and meta-analysis to comprehensively and precisely quantify this topic.MethodsComprehensive searches of PubMed, Embase, and the Web of Science databases were conducted to identify observational studies of the association between parity and MetS risk up to 30 January 2022. Study inclusion, data extraction, and quality assessment were checked and reviewed by two investigators independently. Random-effects models were applied to estimate pooled odds ratios (ORs) and 95% CIs. This study has been registered with PROSPERO.ResultsTwo high-quality cohorts and thirteen medium-quality cross-sectional studies involving 62,095 women were finally included. Compared with the nulliparous, the pooled OR of MetS for the ever parity was 1.31 (95% CI = 0.91-1.88, I 2 = 72.6%, n = 3). Compared with the lowest parity number, the pooled OR of MetS for the highest parity number was 1.38 (95% CI = 1.22-1.57, I 2 = 60.7%, n = 12). For the dose-response analysis, the pooled OR of MetS for each increment of one live birth was 1.12 (95% CI = 1.05-1.19, I 2 = 78.6%, n = 6). These findings were robust across subgroups and sensitivity analyses. No evidence of heterogeneity between subgroups was indicated by meta-regression analyses.ConclusionThe findings suggested that parity was associated with an increased risk of MetS. Relation of metabolic syndrome and its components with risk of diabetic retinopathy: A meta-analysis of observational studies.

Project description:Emerging studies have reported the effects of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components on risk of diabetic retinopathy (DR), but the results remain controversial. Therefore, we performed a meta-analysis to evaluate the relationship between MetS and risk of DR.A meta-analysis of observational studies.Studies were searched from PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Elsevier databases from the start of the database up until November 30, 2017. Adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and its corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were extracted and pooled by using a random effects model.A total of 12 observational studies were included in this meta-analysis. When the MetS as a full syndrome, MetS was not associated with increased risks of type 1 (OR = 1.47, 95% CI 0.67-3.24; P = .34) or type 2 (OR = 1.34, 95% CI 0.91-1.98; P = .14) DR. In addition, none of single component of MetS was associated with the risk of DR, including body mass index/waist circumference (BMI/WC) (OR = 0.92, 95% CI 0.75-1.13; P = .41), blood pressure (OR = 1.37, 95% CI 0.96-1.95; P = .08), high density lipoprotein (OR = 0.97, 95% CI 0.93-1.01; P = .19), and triglyceride (OR = 0.85, 95% CI 0.63-1.15; P = .29). In the sensitivity analysis, the pooled OR values were not changed after we removed the included studies one by one.Based on recent published data, neither MetS nor its components are associated with an increased risk of DR.
