Potassium channels are responsible for the selective permeation of K<sup>+</sup> ions across cell membranes. K<sup>+</sup> ions permeate in single file through the selectivity filter, a narrow pore lined by backbone carbonyls that compose four K<sup>+</sup> binding sites.
