The cervix represents a formidable structural barrier for successful induction of labor. Approximately 10% of pregnancies undergo induction of cervical ripening and labor with prostaglandin (PG) E<sub>2</sub> or PGE analogs, often requiring many hours of hospitalization and monitoring.
