The perceived impact of the European registration system for genetic counsellors and nurses.

ABSTRACT: The aim of the European Board of Medical Genetics has been to develop and promote academic and professional standards necessary in order to provide competent genetic counselling services. The aim of this study was to explore the impact of the European registration system for genetic nurses and counsellors from the perspectives of those professionals who have registered. Registration system was launched in 2013. A cross-sectional, online survey was used to explore the motivations and experiences of those applying for, and the effect of registration on their career. Fifty-five Genetic Nurses and Counsellors are registered till now, from them, thirty-three agreed to participate on this study. The main motivations for registering were for recognition of their work value and competence (30.3%); due to the absence of a registration system in their own country (15.2%) and the possibility of obtaining a European/international certification (27.3%), while 27.3% of respondents registered to support recognition of the genetic counselling profession. Some participants valued the registration process as an educational activity in its own right, while the majority indicated the greatest impact of the registration process was on their clinical practice. The results confirm that registrants value the opportunity to both confirm their own competence and advance the genetic counselling profession in Europe.

Project description:ObjectiveStudies have found that affected individuals who believe the cause of their disorder is genetic may react in various ways, including optimism for improved treatments and pessimism due to perceived permanence of the condition. This study assessed the psychosocial impact of genetic attribution among people with epilepsy.MethodsStudy participants were 165 persons with epilepsy from multiplex epilepsy families who completed a self-administered survey. Psychosocial impact of epilepsy was assessed with the Impact of Epilepsy Scale, containing items about relationships, employment, overall health, self-esteem, and standard of living. Genetic attribution was assessed using a scale derived from three items asking about the role of genetics in causing epilepsy in the family, the chance of having an epilepsy-related mutation, and the influence of genetics in causing the participant's epilepsy. We estimated prevalence ratios (PRs) for impact of epilepsy above the median using Poisson regression with robust standard errors, adjusting for number of lifetime seizures and time since last seizure.ResultsParticipants' age averaged 51 years; 87% were non-Hispanic white, 63% were women, and 54% were college graduates. The genetic attribution scale was significantly associated with having a high impact of epilepsy (adjusted PR = 1.4, 95% confidence interval = 1.07-1.91, P = .02). One of the three genetic attribution questions was also significantly associated with a high impact of epilepsy (belief that genetics had a big role in causing epilepsy in the family, adjusted PR = 1.8).SignificanceThese findings reflect an association between the psychosocial impact of epilepsy and the belief that epilepsy has a genetic cause, among people with epilepsy in families containing multiple affected individuals. This association could arise either because belief in a genetic cause leads to increased psychosocial impacts, or because a greater psychosocial impact of epilepsy leads some to believe their epilepsy is genetic.

Project description:Analysis of the nursing registration databases is a highly informative approach that provides accurate and reliable information supporting evidence based decisions relevant to the nursing workforce planning, management and development. This study presents the first systematic analysis of the nursing registration database in Lebanon. It Reports on the workforce distribution and trends using an updated version of the Order of Nurses in Lebanon (ONL) databases.This study presents a secondary data analysis of a de-identified subset of the updated ONL registration database. The workforce participation status of ONL registered nurses was categorized as active and eligible. For active nurses sectors and sub-sectors of employment were defined. Eligible nurses were categorized as unemployed, working outside nursing and working abroad. SPSS was used to conduct descriptive analysis to present workforce trends of Lebanese nurses for year 2009-2014 as frequencies, percentages and percentage changes.Increases in the size of the Active (35%) and Eligible (86%) nurses were observed over the past six years. The majority of nurses fell in the below 35 years age group (60% in 2014). The hospital sector remained the principle employer, with 87% of Lebanese nurses working in hospitals in 2014. A 173% increases was reported for nurses working abroad.Despite the growth of the Active nursing workforce, the skewed distribution of nurses in the below 35 age group and the growth in the Eligible category, especially for nurses living abroad, raise concerns on the longevity of nurses in the profession and the reasons for their attrition from the workforce.There is a need to investigate the push and pull factors that are affecting nurses and the design of policies and interventions that would encourage nurses to remain active in Lebanon. Furthermore, policies and interventions that would create employment opportunities outside hospitals, especially in the Community sector, are recommended.
