Gravity Cues Embedded in the Kinematics of Human Motion Are Detected in Form-from-Motion Areas of the Visual System and in Motor-Related Areas.

ABSTRACT: The present study investigated the cortical areas engaged in the perception of graviceptive information embedded in biological motion (BM). To this end, functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to assess the cortical areas active during the observation of human movements performed under normogravity and microgravity (parabolic flight). Movements were defined by motion cues alone using point-light displays. We found that gravity modulated the activation of a restricted set of regions of the network subtending BM perception, including form-from-motion areas of the visual system (kinetic occipital region, lingual gyrus, cuneus) and motor-related areas (primary motor and somatosensory cortices). These findings suggest that compliance of observed movements with normal gravity was carried out by mapping them onto the observer's motor system and by extracting their overall form from local motion of the moving light points. We propose that judgment on graviceptive information embedded in BM can be established based on motor resonance and visual familiarity mechanisms and not necessarily by accessing the internal model of gravitational motion stored in the vestibular cortex.

Project description:Frequently, in rugby, players incorporate deceptive motions (e.g., a side-step) in order to pass their opponent. Previous works showed that expert defenders are more efficient in detecting deceptive motions. Performance was shown to be correlated with the evolution of the center of gravity of the attacker, suggesting that experts may rely on global motion cues. This study aims at investigating whether a representation of center of gravity can be useful for training purposes, by using this representation alone or by combining it with the local motion cues given by body parts. We designed an experiment in virtual reality to control the motion cues available to the defenders. Sixteen healthy participants (seven experts and nine novices) acted as defenders while a virtual attacker approached. Participants completed two separate tasks. The first was a time occlusion perception task, occlusion after 100ms, 200ms or 300ms after the initial change in direction, thereafter participants indicated the passing direction of the attacker. The second was a perception-action task, participants were instructed to intercept the oncoming attacker by displacing medio-laterally. The attacker performed either a non-deceptive motion, directly toward the final passing direction or a deceptive motion, initially toward a false direction before quickly reorienting to the true direction. There was a main effect of expertise, appearance, cut off times and motion on correct responses during both tasks. There was an interaction between visual appearance and expertise, and between motion type and expertise during the perception task, however, this interaction was not present during the perception-action task. We observed that experts maintained superiority in the perception of deceptive motion; however when the visual appearance is reduced to global motion alone the difference between novices and experts is reduced. We further explore the interactions and discuss the effects observed for the visual appearance and expertise.

Project description:When moving around in the world, the human visual system uses both motion and form information to estimate the direction of self-motion (i.e., heading). However, little is known about cortical areas in charge of this task. This brain-imaging study addressed this question by using visual stimuli consisting of randomly distributed dot pairs oriented toward a locus on a screen (the form-defined focus of expansion [FoE]) but moved away from a different locus (the motion-defined FoE) to simulate observer translation. We first fixed the motion-defined FoE location and shifted the form-defined FoE location. We then made the locations of the motion- and the form-defined FoEs either congruent (at the same location in the display) or incongruent (on the opposite sides of the display). The motion- or the form-defined FoE shift was the same in the two types of stimuli, but the perceived heading direction shifted for the congruent, but not for the incongruent stimuli. Participants (both sexes) made a task-irrelevant (contrast discrimination) judgment during scanning. Searchlight and ROI-based multivoxel pattern analysis revealed that early visual areas V1, V2, and V3 responded to either the motion- or the form-defined FoE shift. After V3, only the dorsal areas V3a and V3B/KO responded to such shifts. Furthermore, area V3B/KO shows a significantly higher decoding accuracy for the congruent than the incongruent stimuli. Our results provide direct evidence showing that area V3B/KO does not simply respond to motion and form cues but integrates these two cues for the perception of heading.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Human survival relies on accurate perception of self-motion. The visual system uses both motion (optic flow) and form cues for the perception of the direction of self-motion (heading). Although human brain areas for processing optic flow and form structure are well identified, the areas responsible for integrating these two cues for the perception of self-motion remain unknown. We conducted fMRI experiments and used multivoxel pattern analysis technique to find human brain areas that can decode the shift in heading specified by each cue alone and the two cues combined. We found that motion and form cues are first processed in the early visual areas and then are likely integrated in the higher dorsal area V3B/KO for the final estimation of heading.

Project description:BackgroundTo counteract gravity, trunk motion, and other perturbations, the human head-neck system requires continuous muscular stabilization. In this study, we combine a musculoskeletal neck model with models of sensory integration (SI) to unravel the role of vestibular, visual, and muscle sensory cues in head-neck stabilization and relate SI conflicts and postural instability to motion sickness.MethodA 3D multisegment neck model with 258 Hill-type muscle elements was extended with postural stabilization using SI of vestibular (semicircular and otolith) and visual (rotation rate, verticality, and yaw) cues using the multisensory observer model (MSOM) and the subjective vertical conflict model (SVC). Dynamic head-neck stabilization was studied using empirical datasets, including 6D trunk perturbations and a 4 m/s2 slalom drive inducing motion sickness.ResultsRecorded head translation and rotation are well matched when using all feedback loops with MSOM or SVC or assuming perfect perception. A basic version of the model, including muscle, but omitting vestibular and visual perception, shows that muscular feedback can stabilize the neck in all conditions. However, this model predicts excessive head rotations in conditions with trunk rotation and in the slalom. Adding feedback of head rotational velocity sensed by the semicircular canals effectively reduces head rotations at mid-frequencies. Realistic head rotations at low frequencies are obtained by adding vestibular and visual feedback of head rotation based on the MSOM or SVC model or assuming perfect perception. The MSOM with full vision well captures all conditions, whereas the MSOM excluding vision well captures all conditions without vision. The SVC provides two estimates of verticality, with a vestibular estimate SVCvest, which is highly effective in controlling head verticality, and an integrated vestibular/visual estimate SVCint which can complement SVCvest in conditions with vision. As expected, in the sickening drive, SI models imprecisely estimate verticality, resulting in sensory conflict and postural instability.ConclusionThe results support the validity of SI models in postural stabilization, where both MSOM and SVC provide credible results. The results in the sickening drive show imprecise sensory integration to enlarge head motion. This uniquely links the sensory conflict theory and the postural instability theory in motion sickness causation.

Project description:Parkinson's disease is prototypically a movement disorder. Although perceptual and motor functions are highly interdependent, much less is known about perceptual deficits in Parkinson's disease, which are less observable by nature, and might go unnoticed if not tested directly. It is therefore imperative to seek and identify these, to fully understand the challenges facing patients with Parkinson's disease. Also, perceptual deficits may be related to motor symptoms. Posture, gait and balance, affected in Parkinson's disease, rely on veridical perception of one's own motion (self-motion) in space. Yet it is not known whether self-motion perception is impaired in Parkinson's disease. Using a well-established multisensory paradigm of heading discrimination (that has not been previously applied to Parkinson's disease), we tested unisensory visual and vestibular self-motion perception, as well as multisensory integration of visual and vestibular cues, in 19 Parkinson's disease, 23 healthy age-matched and 20 healthy young-adult participants. After experiencing vestibular (on a motion platform), visual (optic flow) or multisensory (combined visual-vestibular) self-motion stimuli at various headings, participants reported whether their perceived heading was to the right or left of straight ahead. Parkinson's disease participants and age-matched controls were tested twice (Parkinson's disease participants on and off medication). Parkinson's disease participants demonstrated significantly impaired visual self-motion perception compared with age-matched controls on both visits, irrespective of medication status. Young controls performed slightly (but not significantly) better than age-matched controls and significantly better than the Parkinson's disease group. The visual self-motion perception impairment in Parkinson's disease correlated significantly with clinical disease severity. By contrast, vestibular performance was unimpaired in Parkinson's disease. Remarkably, despite impaired visual self-motion perception, Parkinson's disease participants significantly overweighted the visual cues during multisensory (visual-vestibular ) integration (compared with Bayesian predictions of optimal integration) and significantly more than controls. These findings indicate that self-motion perception in Parkinson's disease is affected by impaired visual cues and by suboptimal visual-vestibular integration (overweighting of visual cues). Notably, vestibular self-motion perception was unimpaired. Thus, visual self-motion perception is specifically impaired in early-stage Parkinson's disease. This can impact Parkinson's disease diagnosis and subtyping. Overweighting of visual cues could reflect a general multisensory integration deficit in Parkinson's disease, or specific overestimation of visual cue reliability. Finally, impaired self-motion perception in Parkinson's disease may contribute to impaired balance and gait control. Future investigation into this connection might open up new avenues of alternative therapies to better treat these difficult symptoms.
