Electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction activity comparable to platinum exhibited by the Ni/Ni(OH)₂/graphite electrode.

ABSTRACT: Electrochemical dual-pulse plating with sequential galvanostatic and potentiostatic pulses has been used to fabricate an electrocatalytically active Ni/Ni(OH)₂/graphite electrode. This electrode design strategy to generate the Ni/Ni(OH)₂ interface on graphite from Ni deposits is promising for electrochemical applications and has been used by us for hydrogen generation. The synergetic effect of nickel, colloidal nickel hydroxide islands, and the enhanced surface area of the graphite substrate facilitating HO-H cleavage followed by H(ad) recombination, results in the high current density [200 mA/cm² at an overpotential of 0.3 V comparable to platinum (0.44 V)]. The easy method of fabrication of the electrode, which is also inexpensive, prompts us to explore its use in fabrication of solar-driven electrolysis.

Project description:The supporting effect of a N-doped carbon film induced superior crystallinity in electrodeposited Ni@Ni(OH)2 core-shell nanoparticles. This improvement resulted in a much higher regeneration rate of catalytic sites (NiOOH), leading to higher oxidation currents of sugars. Also, the overpotential of the maltopentaose (G5) oxidation reaction decreased significantly, probably due to the effect of the electrostatic interaction between NPs and G5.

Electrocatalytic performance of Pt-Ni nanoparticles supported on an activated graphite electrode for ethanol and 2-propanol oxidation.

Project description:Platinum (Pt) and platinum-nickel (Pt-Ni) electrocatalysts were prepared on activated graphite electrodes by an electrochemical deposition process. The electrocatalysts were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The electrocatalytic activity of the prepared electrocatalysts, their stability, and the effect of temperature toward ethanol and 2-propanol oxidation were evaluated by cyclic voltammetry (CV), chronoamperometry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results showed that the Pt-Ni/C exhibited higher catalytic activity, better stability and better tolerance to poisoning by ethanol and 2-propanol oxidation intermediate species compared to Pt/C, which was interpreted as synergistic and electronic effects between Pt and Ni. A study of the temperature dependence of ethanol and 2-propanol oxidation in the temperature range of 298-318 K, shows that the apparent activation energy for ethanol and 2-propanol oxidation on Pt-Ni/C was lower than on Pt/C. The results also revealed that the electro-oxidation of ethanol and 2-propanol on Pt/C were improved by raising the temperature and Ni modification.

Single atom tungsten doped ultrathin α-Ni(OH)2 for enhanced electrocatalytic water oxidation.

Project description:Electrocatalytic water oxidation is a rate-determining step in the water splitting reaction. Here, we report one single atom W6+ doped Ni(OH)2 nanosheet sample (w-Ni(OH)2) with an outstanding oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance that is, in a 1 M KOH medium, an overpotential of 237 mV is obtained reaching a current density of 10 mA/cm2. Moreover, at high current density of 80 mA/cm2, the overpotential value is 267 mV. The corresponding Tafel slope is measured to be 33 mV/dec. The d0 W6+ atom with a low spin-state has more outermost vacant orbitals, resulting in more water and OH- groups being adsorbed on the exposed W sites of the Ni(OH)2 nanosheet. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that the O radical and O-O coupling are both generated at the same site of W6+. This work demonstrates that W6+ doping can promote the electrocatalytic water oxidation activity of Ni(OH)2 with the highest performance.

Ni(OH)2-Type Nanoparticles Derived from Ni Salen Polymers: Structural Design toward Functional Materials for Improved Electrocatalytic Performance.

Project description:Herein, we report the potential-driven electrochemical transformation carried out in basic media of two Ni2+ salen polymers, (poly(NiSalen)s), abbreviated as poly(meso-NiSaldMe) and poly(NiSaltMe). These two polymers, with different configurations of methyl substituents on the imine bridge, were used as precursors for the preparation of electrocatalytically active nickel hydroxide [Ni(OH)2]-type nanoparticles (NPs) anchored in the polymeric matrix as poly[SalenNi(OH)2]. The use of potentiodynamic and potentiostatic electropolymerization conditions for the deposition of polymeric precursors allowed us to control the molecular architecture of poly(NiSalen)s and NPs derived from them. Thus, we obtained different arrangements of NPs embedded in morphologically different poly(Salen) matrixes, indicating their electrocatalytic activity toward ethanol to different extents. Moreover, we found a direct relationship between the electrochemical stability of the poly(NiSalen) precursors operating in the organic solvent-based electrolyte solutions and the easiness of their transformation into Ni(OH)2 NPs operating in the aqueous alkaline media. Poly(NiSalen)s and Ni(OH)2-type NPs were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy.

Ni(OH)2@Ni core-shell nanochains as low-cost high-rate performance electrode for energy storage applications.

Project description:Energy storage performances of Ni-based electrodes rely mainly on the peculiar nanomaterial design. In this work, a novel and low-cost approach to fabricate a promising core-shell battery-like electrode is presented. Ni(OH)2@Ni core-shell nanochains were obtained by an electrochemical oxidation of a 3D nanoporous Ni film grown by chemical bath deposition and thermal annealing. This innovative nanostructure demonstrated remarkable charge storage ability in terms of capacity (237 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1) and rate capability (76% at 16 A g-1, 32% at 64 A g-1). The relationships between electrochemical properties and core-shell architecture were investigated and modelled. The high-conductivity Ni core provides low electrode resistance and excellent electron transport from Ni(OH)2 shell to the current collector, resulting in improved capacity and rate capability. The reported preparation method and unique electrochemical behaviour of Ni(OH)2@Ni core-shell nanochains show potential in many field, including hybrid supercapacitors, batteries, electrochemical (bio)sensing, gas sensing and photocatalysis.

Regulating the active species of Ni(OH)2 using CeO2: 3D CeO2/Ni(OH)2/carbon foam as an efficient electrode for the oxygen evolution reaction.

Project description:Three dimensional (3D) N, O and S doped carbon foam (NOSCF) is prepared as a substrate for in situ vertically grown Ni(OH)2 nanosheets. As designed Ni(OH)2/NOSCF possesses strong electrostatic interactions with OH- ions due to many C[double bond, length as m-dash]O groups existing in NOSCF, which can facilitate the formation of crucial NiOOH intermediates during the OER process. CeO2 nanoparticles (NPs) of ∼3.3 nm in size are decorated on Ni(OH)2 nanosheets to design a highly efficient CeO2/Ni(OH)2/NOSCF electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The CeO2 NP decorated Ni(OH)2/NOSCF not only exhibits a remarkably improved OER performance with an onset potential of 240 mV, outperforming most reported non-noble metal based OER electrocatalysts, but also possesses a small Tafel slope of 57 mV dec-1 and excellent stability under different overpotentials. The synergistic effect of producing more active species of NiIII/IV and accelerating the charge transfer for Ni(OH)2/NOSCF by the introduction of CeO2 NPs is also investigated. These results demonstrate the possibility of designing energy efficient OER catalysts with the assistance of earth abundant CeO2-based catalysts.

2D nanoporous Ni(OH)2 film as an electrode material for high-performance energy storage devices.

Project description:A two-dimensional (2D) nanoporous Ni(OH)2 film was successfully developed from triethanolamine (TEA) as the alkali source and soft template using a scalable hydrothermal technique. The nanostructured Ni(OH)2 film was flexible and translucent, and could be directly compressed on a current collector. Owing to the uniform well-defined morphology and stable structure, the Ni(OH)2 film binder-free electrode displayed a high specific capacity, exceptional rate capability, and admirable cycle life. The specific capacitance was 453.6 mA h g-1 (1633 F g-1) at 0.5 A g-1. The assembled Ni(OH)2//activated carbon (AC) asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) device had an energy density of 58.7 W h kg-1 at a power density of 400 W kg-1. These prominent electrochemical properties of Ni(OH)2 were attributed to the high electrical conductivity, high surface area, and unique porous architecture. Free tailoring, binder-free, and direct pressing were the most significant achievements of the Ni(OH)2 film in the development of high-performance energy storage devices.

Wrinkled Flower-Like rGO intercalated with Ni(OH)2 and MnO2 as High-Performing Supercapacitor Electrode.

Project description:This study reports a simple one-step hydrothermal method for the preparation of a Ni(OH)2 and MnO2 intercalated rGO nanostructure as a potential supercapacitor electrode material. Having highly amorphous rGO layers with turbostratic and integrated wrinkled flower-like morphology, the as-prepared electrode material showed a high specific capacitance of 420 F g-1 and an energy density of 14.58 Wh kg-1 with 0.5 M Na2SO4 as the electrolyte in a symmetric two-electrode. With the successful intercalation of the γ-MnO2 and α-Ni(OH)2 in between the surface of the as-prepared rGO layers, the interlayer distance of the rGO nanosheets expanded to 0.87 nm. The synergistic effect of γ-MnO2, α-Ni(OH)2, and rGO exhibited the satisfying high cyclic stability with a capacitance retention of 82% even after 10 000 cycles. Thus, the as-prepared Ni(OH)2 and MnO2 intercalated rGO ternary hybrid is expected to contribute to the fabrication of a real-time high-performing supercapacitor device.

One-Pot Synthesis of Nanostructured Ni@Ni(OH)2 and Co-Doped Ni@Ni(OH)2 via Chemical Reduction Method for Supercapacitor Applications.

Project description:Crystalline Ni@Ni(OH)2 (cNNH) and Co-doped cNNH were obtained via a simple one-pot hydrothermal synthesis using a modified chemical reduction method. The effect of each reagent on the synthesis of the nanostructures was investigated concerning the presence or absence of each reagent. The detailed morphology shows that both nanostructures consist of a Ni core and Ni(OH)2 shell layer (~5 nm). Co-doping influences the morphology and suppresses the particle agglomeration of cNNH. Co-doped cNNH showed a specific capacitance of 1238 F g-1 at 1 A g-1 and a capacitance retention of 76%, which are significantly higher than those of cNNH. The enhanced performance of the co-doped cNNH is attributed to the reduced path length of the electrons caused by the decrease in the size of the nanostructure and the increased conductivity due to Co ions substituting Ni ions. The reported synthesis method and electrochemical behaviors of cNNH and Co-doped cNNH affirm their potential as electrochemically active materials for supercapacitor applications.

Bixbyite-type Ln2O3 as promoters of metallic Ni for alkaline electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

Project description:The active-site density, intrinsic activity, and durability of Ni-based catalysts are critical to their application in industrial alkaline water electrolysis. This work develops a kind of promoters, the bixbyite-type lanthanide metal sesquioxides (Ln2O3), which can be implanted into metallic Ni by selective high-temperature reduction to achieve highly efficient Ni/Ln2O3 hybrid electrocatalysts toward hydrogen evolution reaction. The screened Ni/Yb2O3 catalyst shows the low overpotential (20.0 mV at 10 mA cm-2), low Tafel slope (44.6 mV dec-1), and excellent long-term durability (360 h at 500 mA cm-2), significantly outperforming the metallic Ni and benchmark Pt/C catalysts. The remarkable hydrogen evolution activity and stability of Ni/Yb2O3 are attributed to that the Yb2O3 promoter with high oxophilicity and thermodynamic stability can greatly enlarge the active-site density, reduce the energy barrier of water dissociation, optimize the free energy of hydrogen adsorption, and avoid the oxidation corrosion of Ni.
