A Chinese Pane-Like 2D Metal-Organic Framework Showing Magnetic Relaxation and Luminescence Dual-Functions.

ABSTRACT: The discovery of graphene kicked off the curtain of atom-type two-dimensional (2D) materials. Layered metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as parallel molecule-based 2D materials are more designable and more diverse, and magnetism may be induced by their metal ion nodes. However, the multifunctional 2D plane-like MOFs are very difficult to obtain. Here we describe a Chinese pane-like 2D MOF constructed from the Ln3+ cation and the nanoscale luminescent tritopic ligand tris(4'-carboxybiphenyl)-amine, responding to the slow magnetic relaxation and luminescence properties, respectively. Notably, the Dy-Dy distances separated by the tritopic ligand are up to 2?nm. Such a 2D molecular material is expected to have potential applications in optoelectronics and multimodal sensing.

Metal-Organic Framework of Lanthanoid Dinuclear Clusters Undergoes Slow Magnetic Relaxation.

Project description:Lanthanoid metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) can adopt a variety of new structures due to the large coordination numbers of Ln metal ions, and Ln-MOFs are expected to show new luminescence and magnetic properties due to the localized f electrons. In particular, some Ln metal ions, such as Dy(III) and Tb(III) ions, work as isolated quantum magnets when they have magnetic anisotropy. In this work, using 4,4',4″-s-triazine-2,4,6-triyl-tribenzoic acid (H₃TATB) as a ligand, two new Ln-MOFs, [Dy(TATB)(DMF)₂] (1) and [Tb(TATB)(DMF)₂] (2), were obtained. The Ln-MOFs contain Ln dinuclear clusters as secondary building units, and 1 underwent slow magnetic relaxation similar to single-molecule magnets.

Exploring the Luminescence, Redox, and Magnetic Properties in a Multivariate Metal-Organic Radical Framework.

Project description:Persistent neutral organic radicals are excellent building blocks for the design of functional molecular materials due to their unique electronic, magnetic, and optical properties. Among them, triphenylmethyl radical derivatives have attracted a lot of interest as luminescent doublet emitters. Although neutral organic radicals have been underexplored as linkers for building metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), they hold great potential as organic elements that could introduce additional electronic properties within these frameworks. Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of a novel multicomponent metal-organic radical framework (PTMTCR@NR-Zn MORF), which is constructed from the combination of luminescent perchlorotriphenylmethyl tricarboxylic acid radical (PTMTCR) and nonemissive nonradical (PTMTCNR) organic linkers and Zn(II) ions. The PTMTCR@NR-Zn MORF structure is layered with microporous one-dimensional channels embedded within these layers. Kelvin probe force microscopy further confirmed the presence of both organic nonradical and radical linkers in the framework. The luminescence properties of the PTMTCR ligand (first studied in solution and in the solid state) were maintained in the radical-containing PTMTCR@NR-Zn MORF at room temperature as fluorescence solid-state quenching is suppressed thanks to the isolation of the luminescent radical linkers. In addition, magnetic and electrochemical properties were introduced to the framework due to the incorporation of the paramagnetic organic radical ligands. This work paves the way for the design of stimuli-responsive hybrid materials with tunable luminescence, electrochemical, and magnetic properties by the proper combination of closed- and open-shell organic linkers within the same framework.

Dual Metal-Organic Framework Heterointerface.

Project description:Herein, a core-shell dual metal-organic framework (MOF) heterointerface is synthesized. The Prussian blue (PB) MOF acts as a core for the growth of a porphyrin-doped MOF which is named PB@MOF. Porphyrins can significantly enhance the transfer of photoinspired electrons from PB and suppress the recombination of electrons and holes, thus enhancing the photocatalytic properties and consequently promoting the yields of singlet oxygen rapidly under 660 nm illumination. PB@MOF can exhibit a better photothermal conversion efficiency up to 29.9% under 808 nm near-infrared irradiation (NIR). The PB@MOF heterointerface can possess excellent antibacterial efficacies of 99.31% and 98.68% opposed to Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, separately, under the dual light illumination of 808 nm NIR and 660 nm red light for 10 min. Furthermore, the trace amount of Fe and Zr ions can trigger the immune system to favor wound healing, promising that PB@MOF achieves the rapid therapy of bacterial infected wounds and environmental disinfection.

Programmable Drug Release from a Dual-Stimuli Responsive Magnetic Metal-Organic Framework.

Project description:Along with the increasing incidence of cancer and drawbacks of traditional drug delivery systems (DDSs), developing novel nanocarriers for sustained targeted-drug release has become urgent. In this regard, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as potential candidates due to their structural flexibility, defined porosity, lower toxicity, and biodegradability. Herein, a FeMn-based ferromagnetic MOF was synthesized from a preassembled Fe2Mn(μ3-O) cluster. The introduction of the Mn provided the ferromagnetic character to FeMn-MIL-88B. 5-Fluoruracil (5-FU) was encapsulated as a model drug in the MOFs, and its pH and H2S dual-stimuli responsive controlled release was realized. FeMn-MIL-88B presented a higher 5-FU loading capacity of 43.8 wt % and rapid drug release behavior in a tumor microenvironment (TME) simulated medium. The carriers can rapidly release loaded drug of 70% and 26% in PBS solution (pH = 5.4) and NaHS solution (500 μM) within 24 h. The application of mathematical release models indicated 5-FU release from carriers can be precisely fitted to the first-order, second-order, and Higuchi models of release. Moreover, the cytotoxicity profile of the carrier against human embryonic kidney cells (HEK293T) suggests no adverse effects up to 100 μg/mL. The lesser toxic effect on cell viability can be attributed to the low toxicity values [LD50 (Fe) = 30 g·kg-1, (Mn) = 1.5 g·kg-1, and (terephthalic acid) = 5 g·kg-1] of the MOFs structural components. Together with dual-stimuli responsiveness, ferromagnetic nature, and low toxicity, FeMn-MIL-88B MOFs can emerge as promising carriers for drug delivery applications.

Broad Mid-Infrared Luminescence in a Metal-Organic Framework Glass.

Project description:Metal-organic framework (MOF) glasses are a newly discovered family of melt-quenched glasses. Despite considerable progress in understanding the nature of MOF glasses, their photonic functionalities have not been found so far. Here, we report on the first breakthrough regarding the photonic functionalities of MOF glasses, that is, finding of the luminescence in melt-quenched MOF glasses. The finding was achieved on a zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) series, that is, the ZIF-62 series: Zn1-x Co x (Im)1.7(bIm)0.3, x = 0, 0.1, and 0.5, where Co substitutes Zn in ZIF-62 forming single-phased solid solutions. Remarkably, we observed broadband mid-infrared (Mid-IR) luminescence (in the wavelength range of 1.5-4.8 μm) in both the crystalline and amorphous solid solutions. The intensity of the luminescence in ZIF glass is gradually enhanced by increasing the level of Co concentration. The observed Mid-IR emission originates from d-d transition of Co ions. The discovery of the luminescence in ZIF-62 glass may pave the way toward new photonic applications of bulk MOF glasses.

Zirconium-based metal-organic framework gels for selective luminescence sensing.

Project description:Metal-organic gelation represents a promising approach to fabricate functional nanomaterials. Herein a series of Zr-carboxylate gels are synthesized from rigid pyrene, porphyrin and tetraphenyl ethylene-derived tetracarboxylate linkers, namely Zr-TBAPy (H4TBAPy = 1,3,6,8-tetrakis(4-carboxylphenyl)pyrene), Zr-TCPE (H4TCPE = 1,1,2,2-tetra(4-carboxylphenyl)ethylene), and Zr-TCPP (H4TCPP = 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin). The gels are aggregated from metal-organic framework (MOF) nanoparticles. Zr-TBAPy gel consists of NU-901 nanoparticles, and Zr-TCPP gel consists of PCN-224 nanoparticles. The xerogels show high surface areas up to 1203 m2 g-1. MOF gel films are also anchored on the butterfly wing template to yield Zr-MOF/B composites. Zr-TBAPy and Zr-TCPE gels are luminescent for solution-phase sensing and vapour-phase sensing of volatile organic compounds, and exhibit a significant luminescence quenching effect for electron-deficient analytes. Arising from the high porosity and good dispersion of luminescent MOF gels, rapid and effective vapour-sensing of nitrobenzene and 2-nitrotoluene within 30 s has been achieved via Zr-TBAPy film or Zr-TBAPy/B.

Fluorescence and Magnetic Resonance Dual-Modality Imaging-Guided Photothermal and Photodynamic Dual-Therapy with Magnetic Porphyrin-Metal Organic Framework Nanocomposites.

Project description:Phototherapy shows some unique advantages in clinical application, such as remote controllability, improved selectivity, and low bio-toxicity, than chemotherapy. In order to improve the safety and therapeutic efficacy, imaging-guided therapy seems particularly important because it integrates visible information to speculate the distribution and metabolism of the probe. Here we prepare biocompatible core-shell nanocomposites for dual-modality imaging-guided photothermal and photodynamic dual-therapy by the in situ growth of porphyrin-metal organic framework (PMOF) on Fe3O4@C core. Fe3O4@C core was used as T2-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and photothermal therapy (PTT) agent. The optical properties of porphyrin were well remained in PMOF, and PMOF was therefore selected for photodynamic therapy (PDT) and fluorescence imaging. Fluorescence and MR dual-modality imaging-guided PTT and PDT dual-therapy was confirmed with tumour-bearing mice as model. The high tumour accumulation of Fe3O4@C@PMOF and controllable light excitation at the tumour site achieved efficient cancer therapy, but low toxicity was observed to the normal tissues. The results demonstrated that Fe3O4@C@PMOF was a promising dual-imaging guided PTT and PDT dual-therapy platform for tumour diagnosis and treatment with low cytotoxicity and negligible in vivo toxicity.

Dual Emission in a Ligand and Metal Co-Doped Lanthanide-Organic Framework: Color Tuning and Temperature Dependent Luminescence.

Project description:In this study, we report the luminescence color tuning in the lanthanide metal-organic framework (LnMOF) ([La(bpdc)Cl(DMF)] (1); bpdc2- = [1,1'-biphenyl]-4,4'-dicarboxylate, DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide) by introducing dual emission properties in a La3+ MOF scaffold through doping with the blue fluorescent 2,2'-diamino-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4,4'-dicarboxylate (dabpdc2-) and the red emissive Eu3+. With a careful adjustment of the relative doping levels of the lanthanide ions and bridging ligands, the color of the luminescence was modulated, while at the same time the photophysical characteristics of the two chromophores were retained. In addition, the photophysical properties of the parent MOF (1) and its doped counterparts with various dabpdc2-/bpdc2- and Eu3+/La3+ ratios and the photoinduced energy transfer pathways that are possible within these materials are discussed. Finally, the temperature dependence study on the emission profile of a doped analogue containing 10% dabpdc2- and 2.5% Eu3+ (7) is presented, highlighting the potential of this family of materials to behave as temperature sensors.

Achieving gas pressure-dependent luminescence from an AIEgen-based metal-organic framework.

Project description:Materials exhibiting aggregation-induced emission (AIE) behaviour enable strong emission in solid state and can respond to various external stimuli, which may facilitate the development of materials for optical sensing, bioimaging or optoelectronic devices. Herein, we use an AIE luminogen 2',5'-diphenyl-[1,1':4',1"-terphenyl]-4,4"-dicarboxylic acid as the ligand to prepare an AIEgen-based MOF (metal-organic framework) named FJI-H31. FJI-H31 exhibits bright luminescence under ambient conditions (under air and at room temperature), but almost no emission is observed under vacuum. Our investigation shows that the emission intensity displays a smooth and reversible enhancement with increased gas pressure, which may be attributed to the restriction of intramolecular motion brought by structural deformation under pressure stimulus. Unlike most pressure-responsive MOFs, the luminescence reverts to its original state once gas pressure recovers. By virtue of its unique optical properties, a luminescent MOF with sensing ability of gas-pressure is realized.

Exploring the dual functionality of an ytterbium complex for luminescence thermometry and slow magnetic relaxation.

Project description:We present a comprehensive investigation of the magnetic and optical properties of an ytterbium complex, which combines two desirable and practical features into a single molecular system. Based upon YbIII ions that promote near-infrared optical activity and a chemical backbone that is ideal for an in-depth understanding of the magnetic behaviour, we have designed a multifunctional opto-magnetic species that operates as a luminescent thermometer and as a single-molecule magnet (SMM). Our magnetic investigations, in conjunction with ab initio calculations, reveal one of the highest energy barriers reported for an YbIII-based complex. Moreover, we correlate this anisotropic barrier with the emission spectrum of the compound, wherein we provide a complete assignment of the energetic profile of the complex. Such studies lay the foundation for the design of exciting multi-faceted materials that are able to retain information at the single-molecule level and possess built-in thermal self-monitoring capabilities.
