Polarization-independent, wide-incident-angle and dual-band perfect absorption, based on near-field coupling in a symmetric metamaterial.

ABSTRACT: We numerically and experimentally investigated a dual-band metamaterial perfect absorber (MPA), utilizing the near-field coupling of double split-ring resonators (DSRRs). Owing to the near-field coupling between resonators, two arms in each DSRR resonate in different phases, leading to a dual-band perfect absorption. The proposed MPA also exhibits polarization-insensitive behavior and maintains the high absorption above 90% up to a wide range of incident angle more than 45°. Finally, to further consolidate our approach, a multi-band absorption is also studied by exploiting the near-field coupling among a larger number of DSRRs. Our work is expected to be applied to future broadband devices using MPA.

Project description:A novel metamaterial absorber design able to operate in the C frequency band is presented, along with an analysis and a method to improve both its bandwidth and its angular stability. Simulation results for a FR4-based design are shown for comparison with existing designs. In addition, a simplified equivalent circuit is provided for a better understanding of the great angular stability and wide bandwidth exhibited by the proposed structure. Moreover, simulations, manufacturing and measurements of a thinner and more flexible metamaterial absorber, keeping the angular stability of the former one, while providing a wide bandwidth, are presented.

Near-perfect broadband absorption from hyperbolic metamaterial nanoparticles.

Project description:Broadband absorbers are essential components of many light detection, energy harvesting, and camouflage schemes. Current designs are either bulky or use planar films that cause problems in cracking and delamination during flexing or heating. In addition, transferring planar materials to flexible, thin, or low-cost substrates poses a significant challenge. On the other hand, particle-based materials are highly flexible and can be transferred and assembled onto a more desirable substrate but have not shown high performance as an absorber in a standalone system. Here, we introduce a class of particle absorbers called transferable hyperbolic metamaterial particles (THMMP) that display selective, omnidirectional, tunable, broadband absorption when closely packed. This is demonstrated with vertically aligned hyperbolic nanotube (HNT) arrays composed of alternating layers of aluminum-doped zinc oxide and zinc oxide. The broadband absorption measures >87% from 1,200 nm to over 2,200 nm with a maximum absorption of 98.1% at 1,550 nm and remains large for high angles. Furthermore, we show the advantages of particle-based absorbers by transferring the HNTs to a polymer substrate that shows excellent mechanical flexibility and visible transparency while maintaining near-perfect absorption in the telecommunications region. In addition, other material systems and geometries are proposed for a wider range of applications.

Incident Angle- and Polarization-Insensitive Metamaterial Absorber using Circular Sectors.

Project description:In this paper, an incident angle- and polarization-insensitive metamaterial absorber is proposed for X-band applications. A unit cell of the proposed absorber has a square patch at the centre and four circular sectors are rotated around the square patch. The vertically and horizontally symmetric structure of the unit cell enables polarization-insensitivity. The circular sector of the unit cell enables an angle-insensitivity. The performances of the proposed absorber are demonstrated with a full-wave simulation and measurements. The angular sensitivity is studied at different inner angles of the circular sector. When the inner angle of the circular sector is 90°, the simulated absorptivity is higher than 90%, and the frequency variation is less than 0.96% for incident angles up to 70°. The measured absorptivity at 10.44 GHz is close to 100% for all the polarization angles under normal incidence. When the incident angles are varied from 0°- 60°, the measured absorptivity is maintained above 90% for both the transverse electric (TE) and the transverse magnetic (TM) modes.

Miniaturization for ultrathin metamaterial perfect absorber in the VHF band.

Project description:An efficient resolution for ultrathin metamaterial perfect absorber (MPA) is proposed and demonstrated in the VHF radio band (30-300 MHz). By adjusting the lumped capacitors and the through vertical interconnects, the absorber is miniaturized to be only λ/816 and λ/84 for its thickness and periodicity with respect to the operating wavelength (at 102 MHz), respectively. The detailed simulation and calculation show that the MPA can maintain an absorption rate over 90% in a certain range of incident angle and with a wide variation of capacitance. Additionally, we utilized the advantages of the initial single-band structure to realize a nearly perfect dual-band absorber in the same range. The results were confirmed by both simulation and experiment at oblique incidence angles up to 50°. Our work is expected to contribute to the actualization of future metamaterial-based devices working at radio frequency.

Selective dual-band metamaterial perfect absorber for infrared stealth technology.

Project description:We propose a dual-band metamaterial perfect absorber with a metal-insulator-metal structure (MIM) for use in infrared (IR) stealth technology. We designed the MIM structure to have surface plasmon polariton (SPP) and magnetic polariton (MP) resonance peaks at 1.54 μm and 6.2 μm, respectively. One peak suppresses the scattering signals used by laser-guided missiles, and the other matches the atmospheric absorption band, thereby enabling the suppression of long-wavelength IR (LWIR) and mid-wavelength IR (MWIR) signals from objects as they propagate through the air. We analysed the spectral properties of the resonance peaks by comparing the wavelength of the MP peak calculated using the finite-difference time-domain method with that obtained by utilizing an inductor-capacitor circuit model. We evaluated the dependence of the performance of the dual-band metamaterial perfect absorber on the incident angle of light at the surface. The proposed absorber was able to reduce the scattering of 1.54 μm IR laser light by more than 90% and suppress the MWIR and LWIR signatures by more than 92%, as well as maintain MWIR and LWIR signal reduction rates greater than 90% across a wide temperature range from room temperature to 500 °C.

Semiconductor nanowire metamaterial for broadband near-unity absorption.

Project description:The realization of a semiconductor near-unity absorber in the infrared will provide new capabilities to transform applications in sensing, health, imaging, and quantum information science, especially where portability is required. Typically, commercially available portable single-photon detectors in the infrared are made from bulk semiconductors and have efficiencies well below unity. Here, we design a novel semiconductor nanowire metamaterial, and show that by carefully arranging an InGaAs nanowire array and by controlling their shape, we demonstrate near-unity absorption efficiency at room temperature. We experimentally show an average measured efficiency of 93% (simulated average efficiency of 97%) over an unprecedented wavelength range from 900 to 1500 nm. We further show that the near-unity absorption results from the collective response of the nanowire metamaterial, originating from both coupling into leaky resonant waveguide and transverse modes. These coupling mechanisms cause light to be absorbed directly from the top and indirectly as light scatters from one nanowire to neighbouring ones. This work leads to the possible development of a new generation of quantum detectors with unprecedented broadband near-unity absorption in the infrared, while operating near room temperature for a wider range of applications.

Broadband Epsilon-Near-Zero Perfect Absorption in the Near-Infrared.

Project description:Perfect absorption (PA) of incident light is important for both fundamental light-matter interaction studies and practical device applications. PA studies so far have mainly used resonant nanostructures that require delicate structural patterning. Here, we realize tunable and broadband PA in the near-infrared region using relatively simple thin film coatings. We adjust the growth condition of an ITO film and control its epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) wavelength. We show that this results in highly tunable PA in the telecommunication window. Then, using an ITO multilayer of different ENZ wavelengths, we demonstrate broadband PA that covers a wide range of near-infrared wavelengths. The use of ENZ coatings makes PA adjustable during the film growth and does not require any structural patterning afterward. It also facilitates the chip-scale integration of perfect absorbers with other device components. Broadband PA relaxes the single wavelength condition in previous PA studies, and thus it is suitable for many practical device applications, including sensors, photodetectors, and energy harvesting devices.

A Narrow-Band Multi-Resonant Metamaterial in Near-IR.

Project description:We theoretically investigate a multi-resonant plasmonic metamaterial perfect absorber operating between 600 and 950 nm wavelengths. The presented device generates 100% absorption at two resonance wavelengths and delivers an ultra-narrow band (sub-20 nm) and high quality factor (Q=44) resonance. The studied perfect absorber is a metal-insulator-metal configuration where a thin MgF2 spacer is sandwiched between an optically thick gold layer and uniformly patterned gold circular nanodisc antennas. The localized and propagating nature of the plasmonic resonances are characterized and confirmed theoretically. The origin of the perfect absorption is investigated using the impedance matching and critical coupling phenomenon. We calculate the effective impedance of the perfect absorber and confirm the matching with the free space impedance. We also investigate the scattering properties of the top antenna layer and confirm the minimized reflection at resonance wavelengths by calculating the absorption and scattering cross sections. The excitation of plasmonic resonances boost the near-field intensity by three orders of magnitude which enhances the interaction between the metamaterial surface and the incident energy. The refractive index sensitivity of the perfect absorber could go as high as S=500 nm/RIU. The presented optical characteristics make the proposed narrow-band multi-resonant perfect absorber a favorable platform for biosensing and contrast agent based bioimaging.

Q-factor and wavelength adjustable ultra-perfect absorption under critical coupling through epsilon-near-zero-based absorbers.

Project description:Perfect absorption with adjustable Q factor and wavelength is essential in both theory and application. To address this issue, a structure composed of an epsilon-near-zero (ENZ)- SiO2 grating and a multilayer dielectric structure was designed. In the structure, the intrinsic loss is related to the ENZ thickness, while the external leakage depends on the grating parameters. By adjusting the ENZ film thickness, the intrinsic loss rate was tuned to match the external leakage rate corresponding to different grating parameters, realizing the critical couplings with different Q factors and wavelengths. Under critical coupling, the absorption rate reached a maximum of 99.999%, demonstrating ultra-perfect absorption. The Q factor was adjusted from 4350 to 35800, and the absorption wavelength was modified from 1050 to 1282 nm. The design work may provide new ideas for developing wavelength- and Q-selective absorbers, optical modulators, dielectric sensors, and photodetectors.

Ultrathin Six-Band Polarization-Insensitive Perfect Metamaterial Absorber Based on a Cross-Cave Patch Resonator for Terahertz Waves.

Project description:A simple design of an ultrathin six-band polarization-insensitive terahertz perfect metamaterial absorber (PMMA), composed of a metal cross-cave patch resonator (CCPR) placed over a ground plane, was proposed and investigated numerically. The numerical simulation results demonstrate that the average absorption peaks are up to 95% at six resonance frequencies. Owing to the ultra-narrow band resonance absorption of the structure, the designed PMMA also exhibits a higher Q factor (>65). In addition, the absorption properties can be kept stable for both normal incident transverse magnetic (TM) and transverse electric (TE) waves. The physical mechanism behind the observed high-level absorption is illustrated by the electric and power loss density distributions. The perfect absorption originates mainly from the higher-order multipolar plasmon resonance of the structure, which differs sharply from most previous studies of PMMAs. Furthermore, the resonance absorption properties of the PMMA can be modified and adjusted easily by varying the geometric parameters of the unit cell.
