Halogenation of carbyne complexes: isolation of unsaturated metallaiodirenium ion and metallabromirenium ion.

ABSTRACT: The halogenation of metallapentalyne led to the formation of metallapentalenes, which were fully characterized and studied by DFT calculations. The experimental and computational studies indicate that four resonance forms contribute to the overall structure of the metallapentalenes, and one resonance form could be viewed as the first examples of metallaiodirenium and metallabromirenium ions.

Project description:Inspired by the proposed inner-sphere mechanism of the tungstoenzyme acetylene hydratase, we have designed tungsten acetylene complexes and investigated their reactivity. Here, we report the first intermolecular nucleophilic attack on a tungsten-bound acetylene (C2H2) in bioinspired complexes employing 6-methylpyridine-2-thiolate ligands. By using PMe3 as a nucleophile, we isolated cationic carbyne and alkenyl complexes.

Stereoselective Halogenation of Integral Unsaturated C-C Bonds in Chemically and Mechanically Robust Zr and Hf MOFs.

Project description:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) containing Zr(IV) -based secondary building units (SBUs), as in the UiO-66 series, are receiving widespread research interest due to their enhanced chemical and mechanical stabilities. We report the synthesis and extensive characterisation, as both bulk microcrystalline and single crystal forms, of extended UiO-66 (Zr and Hf) series MOFs containing integral unsaturated alkene, alkyne and butadiyne units, which serve as reactive sites for postsynthetic modification (PSM) by halogenation. The water stability of a Zr-stilbene MOF allows the dual insertion of both -OH and -Br groups in a single, aqueous bromohydrination step. Quantitative bromination of alkyne- and butadiyne-containing MOFs is demonstrated to be stereoselective, as a consequence of the linker geometry when bound in the MOFs, while the inherent change in hybridisation and geometry of integral linker atoms is facilitated by the high mechanical stabilities of the MOFs, allowing bromination to be characterised in a single-crystal to single-crystal (SCSC) manner. The facile addition of bromine across the unsaturated C-C bonds in the MOFs in solution is extended to irreversible iodine sequestration in the vapour phase. A large-pore interpenetrated Zr MOF demonstrates an I2 storage capacity of 279 % w/w, through a combination of chemisorption and physisorption, which is comparable to the highest reported capacities of benchmark iodine storage materials for radioactive I2 sequestration. We expect this facile PSM process to not only allow trapping of toxic vapours, but also modulate the mechanical properties of the MOFs.

Gold(I) and Silver(I) π-Complexes with Unsaturated Hydrocarbons.

Project description:Gold π-complexes have been studied largely in the past 2 decades because of their role in gold-catalyzed reactions. We report an experimental and theoretical investigation of the interaction between a wide range of unsaturated hydrocarbons (alkanes, alkynes, alkadienes, and allenes) and triphenylphosphine-gold(I), triphenylphosphine-silver(I), and acetonitrile-silver(I) cations. The bond dissociation energies of these complexes were determined by mass spectrometry collision-induced dissociations and their structures were studied by density functional theory calculations and infrared photodissociation spectroscopy. The results show that with the same phosphine ligand, gold binds stronger to the π-ligands than silver and thereby activates the unsaturated bond more effectively. Ligand exchange of phosphine by acetonitrile at the silver complexes increases the binding energy as well as the activation of the π-ligands. We also show that the substitution of an unsaturated bond is more important than the bond type.

Isolation and Versatile Derivatization of an Unsaturated Anionic Silicon Cluster (Siliconoid).

Project description:The characteristic features of bulk silicon surfaces are echoed in the related partially substituted-and thus unsaturated-neutral silicon clusters (siliconoids). The incorporation of siliconoids into more-extended frameworks is promising owing to their unique electronic features, but further developments in this regard are limited by the notable absence of functionalized siliconoid derivatives until now. Herein we report the isolation and full characterization of the lithium salt of an anionic R5 Si6 -siliconoid, thus providing the missing link between silicon-based Zintl anions and siliconoid clusters. Proof-of-principle for the high potential of this species for the efficient transfer of the intact unsaturated R5 Si6 moiety is demonstrated by clean reactions with representative electrophiles of Groups?13, 14, and 15.

Structural characterization of unsaturated phosphatidylcholines using traveling wave ion mobility spectrometry.

Project description:A number of phosphatidylcholine (PC) cations spanning a mass range of 400-1000 Da are investigated using electrospray ionization mass spectrometry coupled with traveling wave ion mobility spectrometry (TWIMS). A high correlation between mass and mobility is demonstrated with saturated phosphatidylcholine cations in N(2). A significant deviation from this mass-mobility correlation line is observed for the unsaturated PC cation. We found that the double bond in the acyl chain causes a 5% reduction in drift time. The drift time is reduced at a rate of approximately 1% for each additional double bond. Theoretical collision cross sections of PC cations exhibit good agreement with experimentally evaluated values. Collision cross sections are determined using the recently derived relationship between mobility and drift time in TWIMS stacked ring ion guide (SRIG) and compared to estimated collision cross sections using an empiric calibration method. Computational analysis was performed using the modified trajectory (TJ) method with nonspherical N(2) molecules as the drift gas. The difference between estimated collision cross sections and theoretical collision cross sections of PC cations is related to the sensitivity of the PC cation collision cross sections to the details of the ion-neutral interactions. The origin of the observed correlation and deviation between mass and mobility of PC cations is discussed in terms of the structural rigidity of these molecules using molecular dynamic simulations.

Access to Unsaturated Organogermanes via (De)Hydrosilylation Mediated by Cobalt Complexes.

Project description:The functionalization of alkynylgermanes using hydrosilanes was accomplished by employing cobalt catalysis. Depending on the reactants used, the reaction can proceed via dehydrogenative coupling or hydrosilylation. Importantly, the presented method is characterized by mild reaction conditions, allowing rapid access to a wide range of organogermanes.

What Drives Radical Halogenation versus Hydroxylation in Mononuclear Nonheme Iron Complexes? A Combined Experimental and Computational Study.

Project description:Nonheme iron halogenases are unique enzymes in nature that selectively activate an aliphatic C-H bond of a substrate to convert it into C-X (X = Cl/Br, but not F/I). It is proposed that they generate an FeIII(OH)(X) intermediate in their catalytic cycle. The analogous FeIII(OH) intermediate in nonheme iron hydroxylases transfers OH• to give alcohol product, whereas the halogenases transfer X• to the carbon radical substrate. There remains significant debate regarding what factors control their remarkable selectivity of the halogenases. The reactivity of the complexes FeIII(BNPAPh2O)(OH)(X) (X = Cl, Br) with a secondary carbon radical (R•) is described. It is found that X• transfer occurs with a secondary carbon radical, as opposed to OH• transfer with tertiary radicals. Comprehensive computational studies involving density functional theory were carried out to examine the possible origins of this selectivity. The calculations reproduce the experimental findings, which indicate that halogen transfer is not observed for the tertiary radicals because of a nonproductive equilibrium that results from the endergonic nature of these reactions, despite a potentially lower reaction barrier for the halogenation pathway. In contrast, halogen transfer is favored for secondary carbon radicals, for which the halogenated product complex is thermodynamically more stable than the reactant complex. These results are rationalized by considering the relative strengths of the C-X bonds that are formed for tertiary versus secondary carbon centers. The computational analysis also shows that the reaction barrier for halogen transfer is significantly dependent on secondary coordination sphere effects, including steric and H-bonding interactions.

Backbone tuning in indenylidene-ruthenium complexes bearing an unsaturated N-heterocyclic carbene.

Project description:The steric and electronic influence of backbone substitution in IMes-based (IMes = 1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene) N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHC) was probed by synthesizing the [RhCl(CO)?(NHC)] series of complexes to quantify experimentally the Tolman electronic parameter (electronic) and the percent buried volume (%V(bur), steric) parameters. The corresponding ruthenium-indenylidene complexes were also synthesized and tested in benchmark metathesis transformations to establish possible correlations between reactivity and NHC electronic and steric parameters.

Tip-Enhanced Stokes-Anti-Stokes Scattering from Carbyne.

Project description:Carbyne, a linear chain of carbon atoms, is the truly one-dimensional allotrope of carbon and the strongest known Raman scatterer. Here, we use tip-enhanced Raman scattering (TERS) to further enhance the Raman response of a single carbyne chain confined inside a double-walled carbon nanotube. We observe an increase of the anti-Stokes scattering by a factor of 3290 and a 22-fold enhancement of the anti-Stokes/Stokes ratio relative to far-field measurements. The power dependence of the anti-Stokes/Stokes ratio under TERS conditions is indicative of coherent Stokes-anti-Stokes scattering mediated by an excited phonon. The role of resonance effects and laser-induced heating are discussed and potential opportunities are outlined.

Effects of Ligand Halogenation on the Electron Localization, Geometry and Spin State of Low-Coordinate (?-Diketiminato)iron Complexes.

Project description:This contribution explores the influences of incorporating electron-withdrawing CF3 and halide groups into ?-diketiminate iron complexes of tetrazene and isocyanide. The synthesis of a new halogenated ?-diketimine (LCF3,ClH) was accomplished via two different methods, including a novel microwave-assisted synthesis that improves the yield of the difficult condensation. Treatment of an iron(II) complex of this ligand with reductant and azide gives two diiron complexes with novel tetrazenes as bridging ligands. Structural and Mössbauer data show that the bridging tetrazene is a radical anion. The halogenation of the supporting ligand also influences iron(I) complexes of the type LFe(CNtBu)2, which are low-spin and square-planar with alkyl substituents but high-spin and pseudotetrahedral with halogen substituents. DFT calculations suggest that the changes from halogenation come from a combination of steric and electronic effects, and that the electronic influence of ligand halogenation is minor.
