Project description:IntroductionThis collection of cases in medical genetics focuses on ethical dimensions of genetic testing. Given the recent and continuing revolution in genetic testing technologies, understanding the nuances of genetic tests and the implications of their outcomes for patients is a critical learning goal for medical students.MethodsThis case collection was developed for first-year medical students. The cases fall into two types: discussion cases that lend themselves to both small-group and lecture settings and brief audience-response clicker cases to be used in larger lecture settings. The cases span topics such as direct-to-consumer genetic testing, patient privacy, economic and legal issues of genetic testing, and secondary findings in whole exome/genome sequencing. The clicker cases can be used to punctuate class sessions on the related science, while the discussion cases can be deployed as a single 2-hour session focusing on ethics. The associated materials include teaching notes on the scientific and ethical dimensions of the cases, a slide presentation of the cases, and implementation advice.ResultsStudents found that engaging with these cases was very stimulating and eye-opening. Student comments indicated that they appreciated the opportunity to grapple with the ethical dimensions of the genetic testing technologies and that the challenges brought to light highlighted the complexity of medical practice in the genomic era.DiscussionAlthough these cases were originally developed for use with medical students, they could easily be adapted for use in postgraduate and CME settings to explore complex ethical scenarios on which even the experts disagree.

Project description:Vaccines represent the most successful and sustainable tactic to prevent and counteract infection. A vaccine generally improves immunity to a particular disease upon administration by inducing specific protective and efficient immune responses in all of the receiving population. The main known factors influencing the observed heterogeneity for immune re-sponses induced by vaccines are gender, age, co-morbidity, immune system, and genetic background. This review is mainly focused on the genetic status effect to vaccine immune responses and how this could contribute to the development of novel vaccine candidates that could be better directed and predicted relative to the genetic history of an individual and/or population. The text offers a brief history of vaccinology as a field, a description of the genetic status of the most relevant and studied genes and their functionality and correlation with exposure to specific vaccines; followed by an inside look into autoimmunity as a concern when designing vaccines as well as perspectives and conclusions looking towards an era of personalized and predictive vaccinology instead of a one size fits all approach.

Project description:Arabian Gulf University (AGU) follows a curriculum based on Problem Based Learning (PBL). PBL is a learner-centered approach that empowers students for life-long learning. Students are taught through problems that are designed based on global health problems customized to the local needs. The classroom teaching is complemented through adjunct programs like community health activities and professional skills program. Medical education aims to meet the changing needs of society. Demographics, disease epidemiology and healthcare needs of the gulf countries have changed over 38 years since the inception of AGU. To keep pace with the changing demands, it is imperative that the curriculum is reviewed in the light of advances in technology and newer techniques of medical education.In the present article the curriculum at AGU is reviewed based on the predictors for future medical education and alternative teaching methods that can be integrated to optimize the student outputs are explored.

Project description:Scientific and technologic advances are revolutionizing our approach to genetic cancer risk assessment, cancer screening and prevention, and targeted therapy, fulfilling the promise of personalized medicine. In this monograph, we review the evolution of scientific discovery in cancer genetics and genomics, and describe current approaches, benefits, and barriers to the translation of this information to the practice of preventive medicine. Summaries of known hereditary cancer syndromes and highly penetrant genes are provided and contrasted with recently discovered genomic variants associated with modest increases in cancer risk. We describe the scope of knowledge, tools, and expertise required for the translation of complex genetic and genomic test information into clinical practice. The challenges of genomic counseling include the need for genetics and genomics professional education and multidisciplinary team training, the need for evidence-based information regarding the clinical utility of testing for genomic variants, the potential dangers posed by premature marketing of first-generation genomic profiles, and the need for new clinical models to improve access to and responsible communication of complex disease risk information. We conclude that given the experiences and lessons learned in the genetics era, the multidisciplinary model of genetic cancer risk assessment and management will serve as a solid foundation to support the integration of personalized genomic information into the practice of cancer medicine.

Project description:BACKGROUND:Every year, the life science field spends billions of dollars on educational activities worldwide. The continuing professional development of employees, especially in this field, encompasses great challenges. Emerging technologies appear to offer opportunity, but relatively little research has been done on the effectiveness of pedagogies and tools that have been used in the life sciences, and even less research has been devoted to understanding the potential power of emerging options that might determine the field's future. OBJECTIVE:In collaboration with the Life Sciences Trainers & Educators Network (LTEN), this study investigated the current state of the pedagogies and tools currently adopted by corporate training professionals in the life sciences as well as the professionals' perceptions of the impacts of emerging technologies on training. METHODS:This study adopted a mixed methods approach that included a survey and a follow-up interview. The survey consists of 18 broad questions with 15 subquestions in each of the five specific sectors of the life sciences field. Interviews were conducted by phone and lasted approximately 40 minutes, covering 18 questions designed to follow-up on findings from the survey items. RESULTS:Both survey and interview results indicated that the professionals were not satisfied with the status quo and that training and education in this field need to change. Most of the techniques and tools currently used have been used for some time. The professionals surveyed were not satisfied with the current techniques and tools and did not find them cost-effective. In addition, the respondents pictured the future of training in this field to be more engaging and effective. CONCLUSIONS:This is the first study in a series designed to better understand education and training in the life sciences on a macro level, in order to build a foundation for progress and evolution of the future landscape. Next steps involve developing strategies for how to extend this vision throughout individual organizations.
