Unexpectedly strong hydrophilic character of free-standing thin films from carbon nanotubes.

ABSTRACT: We report on the development of a method of formation of hydrophilic carbon nanotube (CNT) films. The technique is simple, straightforward and does not require specialized equipment or use of harsh chemical compounds. Elimination of the need for oxidizing agents has paramount implications because it preserves the inherent CNT properties. A reference study, in which the traditional method of oxidation of CNTs was used to introduce functional groups, gave smaller reduction of water contact angle and made a negative influence on the surface chemistry. From the practical point of view, this method is an important step towards implementation of CNTs in the real life by making them more compatible with interface materials. Interestingly, the method gives high level of control over the surface character of CNT films and hydrophilic character can be precisely patterned where required.

Adsorption kinetics of catalase to thin films of carbon nanotubes.

Project description:The adsorption conditions used to immobilize catalase onto thin films of carbon nanotubes were investigated to elucidate the conditions that produced films with maximum amounts of active catalase. The adsorption kinetics were monitored by spectroscopic ellipsometry, and the immobilized catalase films were then assayed for catalytic activity. The development of a volumetric optical model used to interpret the ellipsometric data is discussed. According to the results herein discussed, not only the adsorbed amount but also the initial adsorption rates determine the final catalytic activity of the adsorbed layer. The results described in this paper have direct implications on the rational design and analytical performance of enzymatic biosensors.

Thermoelectric Properties of Thin Films from Sorted Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes.

Project description:Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) remain one of the most promising materials of our times. One of the goals is to implement semiconducting and metallic SWCNTs in photonics and microelectronics, respectively. In this work, we demonstrated how such materials could be obtained from the parent material by using the aqueous two-phase extraction method (ATPE) at a large scale. We also developed a dedicated process on how to harvest the SWCNTs from the polymer matrices used to form the biphasic system. The technique is beneficial as it isolates SWCNTs with high purity while simultaneously maintaining their surface intact. To validate the utility of the metallic and semiconducting SWCNTs obtained this way, we transformed them into thin free-standing films and characterized their thermoelectric properties.

Analysis of Osteoblast Differentiation on Polymer Thin Films Embedded with Carbon Nanotubes.

Project description:Osteoblast differentiation can be modulated by variations in order of nanoscale topography. Biopolymers embedded with carbon nanotubes can cause various orders of roughness at the nanoscale and can be used to investigate the dynamics of extracellular matrix interaction with cells. In this study, clear relationship between the response of osteoblasts to integrin receptor activation, their phenotype, and transcription of certain genes on polymer composites embedded with carbon nanotubes was demonstrated. We generated an ultrathin nanocomposite film embedded with carbon nanotubes and observed improved adhesion of pre-osteoblasts, with a subsequent increase in their proliferation. The expression of genes encoding integrin subunits α5, αv, β1, and β3 was significantly upregulated at the early of time-point when cells initially attached to the carbon nanotube/polymer composite. The advantage of ultrathin nanocomposite film for pre-osteoblasts was demonstrated by staining for the cytoskeletal protein vinculin and cell nuclei. The expression of essential transcription factors for osteoblastogenesis, such as Runx2 and Sp7 transcription factor 7 (known as osterix), was upregulated after 7 days. Consequently, the expression of genes that determine osteoblast phenotype, such as alkaline phosphatase, type I collagen, and osteocalcin, was accelerated on carbon nanotube embedded polymer matrix after 14 days. In conclusion, the ultrathin nanocomposite film generated various orders of nanoscale topography that triggered processes related to osteoblast bone formation.

Analyzing the Mechanical Properties of Free-Standing PACA Thin Films Using Microindentation Technique.

Project description:Assessing the mechanical properties of materials is of fundamental relevance for their rational usage, but can be challenging with standard tensile testing for highly brittle polymers used, e.g., as coatings. Here, a procedure for the mechanical analysis of free-standing poly(alkyl cyanoacrylate) (PACA) films using microindentation has been explored. Rigid and transparent films from PACA with various side chain compositions were formed on top of square polymer frames by in situ polymerization. Under microscopic control, the free-standing films were analyzed using a microelectromechanical sensing system. By this procedure, decreasing Young's moduli E for increasing PACA side chain length and flexibility were determined with strain at break εB between 0.36% for poly(ethyl cyanoacrylate) and 4.6% for poly(methoxyethyl cyanoacrylate). Based on this successful application, the applied methodology may be relevant for characterizing various coating materials, which are otherwise hard to form as thin free-standing films, and using the data, e.g., in computationally assisted design and evaluation of hybrid material devices.

Electrosynthesis of Biocompatible Free-Standing PEDOT Thin Films at a Polarized Liquid|Liquid Interface.

Project description:Conducting polymers (CPs) find applications in energy conversion and storage, sensors, and biomedical technologies once processed into thin films. Hydrophobic CPs, like poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), typically require surfactant additives, such as poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS), to aid their aqueous processability as thin films. However, excess PSS diminishes CP electrochemical performance, biocompatibility, and device stability. Here, we report the electrosynthesis of PEDOT thin films at a polarized liquid|liquid interface, a method nonreliant on conductive solid substrates that produces free-standing, additive-free, biocompatible, easily transferrable, and scalable 2D PEDOT thin films of any shape or size in a single step at ambient conditions. Electrochemical control of thin film nucleation and growth at the polarized liquid|liquid interface allows control over the morphology, transitioning from 2D (flat on both sides with a thickness of <50 nm) to "Janus" 3D (with flat and rough sides, each showing distinct physical properties, and a thickness of >850 nm) films. The PEDOT thin films were p-doped (approaching the theoretical limit), showed high π-π conjugation, were processed directly as thin films without insulating PSS and were thus highly conductive without post-processing. This work demonstrates that interfacial electrosynthesis directly produces PEDOT thin films with distinctive molecular architectures inaccessible in bulk solution or at solid electrode-electrolyte interfaces and emergent properties that facilitate technological advances. In this regard, we demonstrate the PEDOT thin film's superior biocompatibility as scaffolds for cellular growth, opening immediate applications in organic electrochemical transistor (OECT) devices for monitoring cell behavior over extended time periods, bioscaffolds, and medical devices, without needing physiologically unstable and poorly biocompatible PSS.

Fabrication and Characterization of Polypyrrole/Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Thin Films Using Thermal Evaporation.

Project description:Polypyrrole/multiwalled carbon nanotubes composites (PPy/MWCNTs) were produced in an acidic solution utilizing an in situ oxidative polymerization method using ferric chloride as an oxidizing agent and sodium dodecyl sulfate as a soft template. Thermal evaporation was used to fabricate thin films from polypyrrole/multiwalled carbon nanotube composites. The resulting composites were examined by different techniques to explore their morphology, structural and electrical characteristics. The surface morphology analysis revealed that polypyrrole structure is a two-dimensional film with impeded nanoparticles and the thickness of coated PPy around the MWCNTs decreases when increasing the amount of MWCNTs. XRD analysis revealed that the average crystallite size of the prepared composites is 62.26 nm. The direct energy gap for PPy is affected by a factor ranging from 2.41 eV to 1.47 eV depending on the contents of MWCNTs. The thin film's optical properties were examined using experimental and TDDFT-DFT/DMOl3 simulation techniques. The optical constants and optical conductivity of the composites were calculated and correlated. The structural and optical characteristics of the simulated nanocomposites as single isolated molecules accord well with the experimental results. The nanocomposite thin films demonstrated promising results, making them a viable candidate for polymer solar cell demands. Under optimal circumstances, the constructed planar heterojunction solar cells with a 75 ± 3 nm layer of PPy/MWCNTs had a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.86%.

Highly flexible and free-standing carbon nanotube/hollow carbon nanocage hybrid films for high-performance supercapacitors.

Project description:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been considered as promising electrode materials for energy storage devices, especially flexible electronics owing to their excellent electrical, physicochemical and mechanical properties. However, the severe aggregation between CNTs significantly reduces the electrochemically active surface areas and thus degrades the electrochemical properties. In this study, we demonstrate a facile layer-by-layer strategy toward preparing a CNT/hollow carbon nanocage (HCNC) hybrid film. Through electrochemically removing the impurities in CNT films and optimizing the concentrations of HCNC, the hybrid film exhibits a high specific capacitance of 183.7 F g-1 at 10 mV s-1 and good cycling stability of 85% retention after 5000 cycles at 1 A g-1. Our study provides potential scale-up synthesis of free-standing CNT electrode materials for high-performance supercapacitors.

Thin single-wall BN-nanotubes formed inside carbon nanotubes.

Project description:We report a high yield synthesis of single-wall boron nitride nanotubes (SWBNNTs) inside single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), a nano-templated reaction, using ammonia borane complexes (ABC) as a precursor. Transmission electron microscope (TEM), high angle annular dark field (HAADF)-scanning TEM (STEM), electron energy loss spectra (EELS) and high resolution EELS mapping using aberration-corrected TEM system clearly show the formation of thin SWBNNTs inside SWCNTs. We have found that the yield of the SWBNNT formation is high and that the most of ABC molecules decompose and fuse to form the thin BNNTs at a temperature of 1,673 K having a narrow diameter distribution of 0.7 ± 0.1 nm. Optical absorption measurements suggest that the band gap of the thin SWBNNTs is about 6.0 eV, which provide the ideal insulator nanotubes with very small diameters.

Determination of the electronic transport in type separated carbon nanotubes thin films doped with gold nanocrystals.

Project description:We report a systematic theoretical and experimental investigation on the electronic transport evolution in metallic and semiconducting carbon nanotubes thin films enriched by gold nanocrystals. We used an ultra-clean production method of both types of single-walled carbon nanotube thin films with/without gold nanocrystals, which were uniformly dispersed in the whole volume of the thin films, causing a modification of the doping level of the films (verified by Raman spectroscopy). We propose a modification of the electronic transport model with the additional high-temperature features that allow us to interpret the transport within a broader temperature range and that are related to the conductivity type of carbon nanotubes. Moreover, we demonstrate, that the proposed model is also working for thin films with the addition of gold nanocrystals, and only a change of the conductivity level of our samples is observed caused by modification of potential barriers between carbon nanotubes. We also find unusual behavior of doped metallic carbon nanotube thin film, which lowers its conductivity due to doping.

Free-standing lithiophilic Ag-nanoparticle-decorated 3D porous carbon nanotube films for enhanced lithium storage.

Project description:Lithium metal batteries are promising candidates for next generation high energy batteries. However, an undesirable dendrite growth hinders their practical applications. Herein, a three-dimensional (3D) porous carbon nanotube film decorated with Ag nanoparticles (CNT/Ag) has been synthesized via the thermal decomposition reaction of AgNO3 into Ag nanoparticles, and then is transformed into a 3D porous CNT/Ag/Li film via thermal infusion to obtain a high-performance free-standing lithium host. This as-formed 3D CNT/Ag/Li host can effectively restrain the dendrite growth by guiding Li deposition via the highly lithiophilic Ag nanoparticle seeds and lowering local current density of the highly conductive matrix. The as-prepared CNT/Ag/Li electrode exhibits long-term cycling stability over 200 cycles at a current density of 1 mA cm-2 with an areal capacity of 1.0 mA h cm-2. Moreover, the full cell paired with a sulfur/C cathode shows good cycling stability. Therefore, the 3D porous CNT/Ag/Li film formed via a facile three-step fabrication process can enlarge the cycle lifetime of a lithium metal anode.
