A multilayer network dataset of interaction and influence spreading in a virtual world.

ABSTRACT: Presented data contains the record of five spreading campaigns that occurred in a virtual world platform. Users distributed avatars between each other during the campaigns. The processes varied in time and range and were either incentivized or not incentivized. Campaign data is accompanied by events. The data can be used to build a multilayer network to place the campaigns in a wider context. To the best of the authors' knowledge, the study is the first publicly available dataset containing a complete real multilayer social network together, along with five complete spreading processes in it.

A multilayer temporal network model for STD spreading accounting for permanent and casual partners.

Project description:Sexually transmitted diseases (STD) modeling has used contact networks to study the spreading of pathogens. Recent findings have stressed the increasing role of casual partners, often enabled by online dating applications. We study the Susceptible-Infected-Susceptible (SIS) epidemic model -appropriate for STDs- over a two-layer network aimed to account for the effect of casual partners in the spreading of STDs. In this novel model, individuals have a set of steady partnerships (links in layer 1). At certain rates, every individual can switch between active and inactive states and, while active, it establishes casual partnerships with some probability with active neighbors in layer 2 (whose links can be thought as potential casual partnerships). Individuals that are not engaged in casual partnerships are classified as inactive, and the transitions between active and inactive states are independent of their infectious state. We use mean-field equations as well as stochastic simulations to derive the epidemic threshold, which decreases substantially with the addition of the second layer. Interestingly, for a given expected number of casual partnerships, which depends on the probabilities of being active, this threshold turns out to depend on the duration of casual partnerships: the longer they are, the lower the threshold.

Behavioral and network origins of wealth inequality: insights from a virtual world.

Project description:Almost universally, wealth is not distributed uniformly within societies or economies. Even though wealth data have been collected in various forms for centuries, the origins for the observed wealth-disparity and social inequality are not yet fully understood. Especially the impact and connections of human behavior on wealth could so far not be inferred from data. Here we study wealth data from the virtual economy of the massive multiplayer online game (MMOG) Pardus. This data not only contains every player's wealth at every point in time, but also all actions over a timespan of almost a decade. We find that wealth distributions in the virtual world are very similar to those in Western countries. In particular we find an approximate exponential distribution for low wealth levels and a power-law tail for high levels. The Gini index is found to be g = 0.65, which is close to the indices of many Western countries. We find that wealth-increase rates depend on the time when players entered the game. Players that entered the game early on tend to have remarkably higher wealth-increase rates than those who joined later. Studying the players' positions within their social networks, we find that the local position in the trade network is most relevant for wealth. Wealthy people have high in- and out-degrees in the trade network, relatively low nearest-neighbor degrees, and low clustering coefficients. Wealthy players have many mutual friendships and are socially well respected by others, but spend more time on business than on socializing. Wealthy players have few personal enemies, but show animosity towards players that behave as public enemies. We find that players that are not organized within social groups are significantly poorer on average. We observe that "political" status and wealth go hand in hand.

Hierarchical effects facilitate spreading processes on synthetic and empirical multilayer networks.

Project description:In this paper we consider the effects of corporate hierarchies on innovation spread across multilayer networks, modeled by an elaborated SIR framework. We show that the addition of management layers can significantly improve spreading processes on both random geometric graphs and empirical corporate networks. Additionally, we show that utilizing a more centralized working relationship network rather than a strict administrative network further increases overall innovation reach. In fact, this more centralized structure in conjunction with management layers is essential to both reaching a plurality of nodes and creating a stable adopted community in the long time horizon. Further, we show that the selection of seed nodes affects the final stability of the adopted community, and while the most influential nodes often produce the highest peak adoption, this is not always the case. In some circumstances, seeding nodes near but not in the highest positions in the graph produces larger peak adoption and more stable long-time adoption.

UIBVFED: Virtual facial expression dataset.

Project description:Facial expression classification requires large amounts of data to reflect the diversity of conditions in the real world. Public databases support research tasks providing researchers an appropriate work framework. However, often these databases do not focus on artistic creation. We developed an innovative facial expression dataset that can help both artists and researchers in the field of affective computing. This dataset can be managed interactively by an intuitive and easy to use software application. The dataset is composed of 640 facial images from 20 virtual characters each creating 32 facial expressions. The avatars represent 10 men and 10 women, aged between 20 and 80, from different ethnicities. Expressions are classified by the six universal expressions according to Gary Faigin classification.

Multilayer Network Analysis of Nuclear Reactions.

Project description:The nuclear reaction network is usually studied via precise calculation of differential equation sets, and much research interest has been focused on the characteristics of nuclides, such as half-life and size limit. In this paper, however, we adopt the methods from both multilayer and reaction networks, and obtain a distinctive view by mapping all the nuclear reactions in JINA REACLIB database into a directed network with 4 layers: neutron, proton, (4)He and the remainder. The layer names correspond to reaction types decided by the currency particles consumed. This combined approach reveals that, in the remainder layer, the β-stability has high correlation with node degree difference and overlapping coefficient. Moreover, when reaction rates are considered as node strength, we find that, at lower temperatures, nuclide half-life scales reciprocally with its out-strength. The connection between physical properties and topological characteristics may help to explore the boundary of the nuclide chart.

Influence of choice of null network on small-world parameters of structural correlation networks.

Project description:In recent years, coordinated variations in brain morphology (e.g., volume, thickness) have been employed as a measure of structural association between brain regions to infer large-scale structural correlation networks. Recent evidence suggests that brain networks constructed in this manner are inherently more clustered than random networks of the same size and degree. Thus, null networks constructed by randomizing topology are not a good choice for benchmarking small-world parameters of these networks. In the present report, we investigated the influence of choice of null networks on small-world parameters of gray matter correlation networks in healthy individuals and survivors of acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Three types of null networks were studied: 1) networks constructed by topology randomization (TOP), 2) networks matched to the distributional properties of the observed covariance matrix (HQS), and 3) networks generated from correlation of randomized input data (COR). The results revealed that the choice of null network not only influences the estimated small-world parameters, it also influences the results of between-group differences in small-world parameters. In addition, at higher network densities, the choice of null network influences the direction of group differences in network measures. Our data suggest that the choice of null network is quite crucial for interpretation of group differences in small-world parameters of structural correlation networks. We argue that none of the available null models is perfect for estimation of small-world parameters for correlation networks and the relative strengths and weaknesses of the selected model should be carefully considered with respect to obtained network measures.

4T1 mouse tumour single cell dataset for virtual reality exploration

Project description:50,000 cells were injected orthotopically into the inguinal fat pad of a Nod-Scid-Gamma (NSG) immuno-compromised mouse. Injected cells were 80% unlabelled 4T1 cells (parental population), and 20% ZsGreen-labelled 4T1-T cells (clone isolated in Wagenblast et Al, Nature, 2015). Tumour were allowed to develop for 20 days, and then collected during necropsy. Disaggegated cells were processed through the 10X genomics Single Cell 3' gene expression pipeline. Comparing eye-hand coordination between controller-mediated virtual reality, and a real-world object interaction task.

Project description:Virtual reality (VR) technology has advanced significantly in recent years, with many potential applications. However, it is unclear how well VR simulations mimic real-world experiences, particularly in terms of eye-hand coordination. This study compares eye-hand coordination from a previously validated real-world object interaction task to the same task re-created in controller-mediated VR. We recorded eye and body movements and segmented participants' gaze data using the movement data. In the real-world condition, participants wore a head-mounted eye tracker and motion capture markers and moved a pasta box into and out of a set of shelves. In the VR condition, participants wore a VR headset and moved a virtual box using handheld controllers. Unsurprisingly, VR participants took longer to complete the task. Before picking up or dropping off the box, participants in the real world visually fixated the box about half a second before their hand arrived at the area of action. This 500-ms minimum fixation time before the hand arrived was preserved in VR. Real-world participants disengaged their eyes from the box almost immediately after their hand initiated or terminated the interaction, but VR participants stayed fixated on the box for much longer after it was picked up or dropped off. We speculate that the limited haptic feedback during object interactions in VR forces users to maintain visual fixation on objects longer than in the real world, altering eye-hand coordination. These findings suggest that current VR technology does not replicate real-world experience in terms of eye-hand coordination.

Learning and coordinating in a multilayer network.

Project description:We introduce a two layer network model for social coordination incorporating two relevant ingredients: a) different networks of interaction to learn and to obtain a pay-off, and b) decision making processes based both on social and strategic motivations. Two populations of agents are distributed in two layers with intralayer learning processes and playing interlayer a coordination game. We find that the skepticism about the wisdom of crowd and the local connectivity are the driving forces to accomplish full coordination of the two populations, while polarized coordinated layers are only possible for all-to-all interactions. Local interactions also allow for full coordination in the socially efficient Pareto-dominant strategy in spite of being the riskier one.

Multilayer network construction and analysis pipeline for gene expression data

Project description:Molecular networks are key to understanding the complexity of biological systems. Despite the advances in network construction and analysis techniques, challenges remain in incorporating multidimensional interactions into a hybrid network model and reducing the complexity of large networks into functional modules or influential nodes. Here, we introduce CREAM, a user-friendly application that empowers biologists to construct multilayer networks by integrating gene expression data with various known interactions predicted by experimental and computational techniques, and to identify functional modules and prognostic biomarkers within these networks. When applied to multiple cancer types, CREAM outperforms state-of-the-art module detection methods in identifying biologically relevant modules. Further investigation of colon adenocarcinoma revealed numerous well-known cancer regulators and a promising new therapeutic target, miR-8485. Our in vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrated its inhibitory effects on colon cancer cell proliferation and migration. Overall, CREAM is expected to significantly advance network-based precision medicine research.
