E-cigarettes, conventional cigarettes, and dual use in Korean adolescents and university students: Prevalence and risk factors.

ABSTRACT: OBJECTIVE:To examine risk factors associated with use of e-cigarettes only, conventional cigarettes only, and dual use in Korean adolescents and young adults. METHODS:In a cross-sectional study, anonymous questionnaires were completed between April-May, 2015 among 1) 2744 middle and high school students, aged 13-18, from Seoul, Incheon, Gyeonggi, and Cheongju, Korea and 2) 2167 university students, aged 19-29, from fourteen universities in Korea. RESULTS:The results show that 12.6% of adolescents and 21.2% of university students reported having ever tried e-cigarettes at least once. Among the ever e-cigarette users, 95.1% and 96.3% of adolescents and university students also tried conventional cigarettes, respectively. Dual users were more likely to be male (adolescents: OR 2.63, 95% CI 1.93-3.57; university students: 4.28, 3.21-5.70), have any close friends who smoke (adolescents: 11.56, 7.63-17.53; university students: 11.29, 5.52-23.10), have any siblings who smoke (adolescents: 3.17, 2.25-4.46; university students: 1.78, 1.30-2.43), and have observed teachers smoke cigarettes at school (adolescents: 1.45, 1.05-2.01). CONCLUSIONS:A majority of e-cigarette users were dual users. Friends' and siblings' smoking status were significantly associated with dual product use in adolescent and young adult populations. Surveillance of e-cigarette use and implementation of evidence-based behavioral interventions targeting adolescents and young adults are necessary.

Project description:IntroductionThe use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) in adults is increasing globally, and similar trends may be observed in the young population. Our objective was to estimate the awareness and use of e-cigarettes among the students from two comprehensive universities in Shanghai, China, and to identify the factors that may influence their decision to use e-cigarettes and their possible adverse effects.MethodsAn online cross-sectional survey was conducted among the students of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Fudan University. A total of 869 students (412 males and 457 females), mean age 21.09 years (SD=2.44), were recruited in 2018. Multivariate binary logistic regression analyses were performed to explore the associations between ever e-cigarette use and influencing factors.ResultsOf the responding students, 88.4% were aware of e-cigarettes, 4.6% had used e-cigarettes at least once in their lifetime, and 1.7% were current e-cigarettes users. Males and smokers were more likely to use e-cigarettes (ever used e-cigarettes even once) than females (OR=3.51; 95% CI: 1.69-7.27; p=0.001) and non-smokers (OR=28.58; 95% CI: 14.03-58.20; p<0.001). University students were easily motivated to use e-cigarettes when their peers also used them, and the risk ratio was 4.15 (95% CI: 2.11-8.19) compared with if their peers never used e-cigarettes. The major factors found to motivate university students to use e-cigarettes were the belief that e-cigarettes were less harmful or not harmful (55.0%) and the perception that e-cigarettes were helpful to quit smoking (37.5%). The survey also indicated that 72.4% of the respondents heard about e-cigarettes from television advertisements, 42.7% from websites online, and 41.2% from their parents and friends.ConclusionsUniversity students who were males, cigarette smokers and whose peers used e-cigarettes were more likely to use e-cigarettes. The use of traditional cigarettes should be controlled strictly in order to reduce the likelihood of e-cigarette use among university students.

Project description:To examine e-cigarette use and conventional cigarette smoking.Cross-sectional analyses of survey data from a representative sample of US middle and high school students in 2011 (n = 17 353) and 2012 (n = 22 529) who completed the 2011 and 2012 National Youth Tobacco Survey.Ever and current e-cigarette use.Experimentation with, ever, and current smoking, and smoking abstinence.Among cigarette experimenters (1 puff), ever e-cigarette use was associated with higher odds of ever smoking cigarettes (100 cigarettes; odds ratio [OR] = 6.31; 95% CI, 5.39-7.39) and current cigarette smoking (OR = 5.96; 95% CI, 5.67-6.27). Current e-cigarette use was positively associated with ever smoking cigarettes (OR = 7.42; 95% CI, 5.63-9.79) and current cigarette smoking (OR = 7.88; 95% CI, 6.01-10.32). In 2011, current cigarette smokers who had ever used e-cigarettes were more likely to intend to quit smoking within the next year (OR = 1.53; 95% CI, 1.03-2.28). Among experimenters with conventional cigarettes, ever use of e-cigarettes was associated with lower 30-day (OR = 0.24; 95% CI, 0.21-0.28), 6-month (OR = 0.24; 95% CI, 0.21-0.28), and 1-year (OR = 0.25; 95% CI, 0.21-0.30) abstinence from cigarettes. Current e-cigarette use was also associated with lower 30-day (OR = 0.11; 95% CI, 0.08-0.15), 6-month (OR = 0.11; 95% CI, 0.08-0.15), and 1-year (OR = 0.12; 95% CI, 0.07-0.18) abstinence. Among ever smokers of cigarettes (100 cigarettes), ever e-cigarette use was negatively associated with 30-day (OR = 0.61; 95% CI, 0.42-0.89), 6-month (OR = 0.53; 95% CI, 0.33-0.83), and 1-year (OR = 0.32; 95% CI, 0.18-0.56) abstinence from conventional cigarettes. Current e-cigarette use was also negatively associated with 30-day (OR = 0.35; 95% CI, 0.18-0.69), 6-month (OR = 0.30; 95% CI, 0.13-0.68), and 1-year (OR = 0.34; 95% CI, 0.13-0.87) abstinence.Use of e-cigarettes was associated with higher odds of ever or current cigarette smoking, higher odds of established smoking, higher odds of planning to quit smoking among current smokers, and, among experimenters, lower odds of abstinence from conventional cigarettes. Project description:BackgroundAll over the globe shisha smoking is fast growing among different age brackets. Shisha use has been reported to be increasing among youths in African major cities. Its use is documented to result in health effects such as lung cancer, cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, periodontal diseases, keratoacanthoma which are also associated with cigarette smoking. In Kigali, Rwanda's capital, reports indicate that shisha use is increasing among the youths, particularly the university students. The study aimed at determining the prevalence, and establishing factors associated with shisha use among students in a university in Kigali Rwanda, which will be a significant step in stemming shisha fame among youths in Rwanda as there was no previously documented evidence-based study.MethodsA total of 427 students were selected for this cross-sectional study using stratified sampling method. A questionnaire was used to collect data on shisha use, knowledge about shisha, attitude towards shisha, and factors associated with use of shisha. The association between the independent variables and shisha use was assessed using chi-square p value <?0.05. Binary logistic regression was used to determine variables that were independently associated with shisha smoking.ResultsPrevalence of ever smoking shisha among the university students was 26.1% and that of those that smoked in the last month (30 days) was 20.8%. About 40 % (39.9%) of the participants that had heard about shisha before demonstrated low level of knowledge, and 41.6% of these reported shisha use in the last 30 days. Logistic regression revealed that the followings were independently associated with shisha smoking: always drink alcohol (p?=?0.003); drink alcohol occasionally (p?=?0.045); having friend(s) who smoke shisha (p?=?0.001); being aware of shisha's availability in cafes, bars and restaurants in Kigali (p?=?0.022); positive attitude towards shisha smoking (p?<?0.001) and participants with age?<?20 years (p?=?0.039).ConclusionsThere is a relative high prevalence of shisha smoking and a poor knowledge about its impact on health among these university students. Regular medical education and health promotion targeting the youths could improve knowledge and practices about shisha use. Shisha laws and regulations should be enacted, and fines imposed on individuals or group who flout them.

Project description:BackgroundSubstance use is an important public health concern in many countries across the globe. Among the general public, institutions of higher learning have developed a reputation for inducing new substance use among students. In addition to socio-demographic factors, substance use and abuse among university students often appear to be related to psychological stressors typically related to the demand to adapt to the new environment and the pressures associated with academia. The purpose of this study was to identify the prevalence of, and factors associated with substance use among university students.MethodsThis quantitative study employed convenience sampling to recruit university students who were 18 years and older from a university in the Western Cape. The study made use of self-administered online questionnaires, which participants completed via SurveyMonkey. The sample consisted of 2915 students. Descriptive statistics were used to describe and provide the prevalence and overview of the demographic characteristics of the respondents. Associations between variables were explored using Chi-square and Mann-Whitney U tests.ResultsThe main findings revealed a substance use prevalence rate of 62.7%. The most prominent substances used by students were alcohol (80.6%), cannabis (46%), and ecstasy (5.3%). The study further revealed clear associations between students' substance use and mental health. Students who reported substance use at university reported higher depression and anxiety scores than those who did not. However, findings reveal no significant association (p = 0.233) between being a substance user and a nonsubstance user and students' respective self-perceived stress scores.ConclusionResults show the majority of sampled students had started using substances (both alcohol and other substances) only after entering university. The results call into question seminal findings relating to substance use and the university environment. The novel findings of this study could serve as a baseline input to inform policymakers, programme developers, service providers, parents, and other stakeholders who are involved in the design and implementation of more effective awareness, prevention and, needs-based intervention services.
