Narrow-bandwidth sensing of high-frequency fields with continuous dynamical decoupling.

ABSTRACT: State-of-the-art methods for sensing weak AC fields are only efficient in the low frequency domain (<10 MHz). The inefficiency of sensing high-frequency signals is due to the lack of ability to use dynamical decoupling. In this paper we show that dynamical decoupling can be incorporated into high-frequency sensing schemes and by this we demonstrate that the high sensitivity achieved for low frequency can be extended to the whole spectrum. While our scheme is general and suitable to a variety of atomic and solid-state systems, we experimentally demonstrate it with the nitrogen-vacancy center in diamond. For a diamond with natural abundance of ¹³C, we achieve coherence times up to 1.43 ms resulting in a smallest detectable magnetic field strength of 4 nT at 1.6 GHz. Attributed to the inherent nature of our scheme, we observe an additional increase in coherence time due to the signal itself.

Clock transition by continuous dynamical decoupling of a three-level system.

Project description:We present a novel continuous dynamical decoupling scheme for the construction of a robust qubit in a three-level system. By means of a clock transition adjustment, we first show how robustness to environmental noise is achieved, while eliminating drive-noise, to first-order. We demonstrate this scheme with the spin sub-levels of the NV-centre's electronic ground state. By applying drive fields with moderate Rabi frequencies, the drive noise is eliminated and an improvement of 2 orders of magnitude in the coherence time is obtained compared to the pure dephasing time. We then show how the clock transition adjustment can be tuned to eliminate also the second-order effect of the environmental noise with moderate drive fields. A further detailed theoretical investigation suggests an additional improvement of more than 1 order of magnitude in the coherence time which is supported by simulations. Hence, our scheme predicts that the coherence time may be prolonged towards the lifetime-limit using a relatively simple experimental setup.

Accelerated high-bandwidth MR spectroscopic imaging using compressed sensing.

Project description:PurposeTo develop a compressed sensing (CS) acceleration method with a high spectral bandwidth exploiting the spatial-spectral sparsity of MR spectroscopic imaging (MRSI).MethodsAccelerations were achieved using blip gradients during the readout to perform nonoverlapped and stochastically delayed random walks in kx -ky -t space, combined with block-Hankel matrix completion for efficient reconstruction. Both retrospective and prospective CS accelerations were applied to (13) C MRSI experiments, including in vivo rodent brain and liver studies with administrations of hyperpolarized [1-(13) C] pyruvate at 7.0 Tesla (T) and [2-(13) C] dihydroxyacetone at 3.0 T, respectively.ResultsIn retrospective undersampling experiments using in vivo 7.0 T data, the proposed method preserved spectral, spatial, and dynamic fidelities with R(2) ≥ 0.96 and ≥ 0.87 for pyruvate and lactate signals, respectively, 750-Hz spectral separation, and up to 6.6-fold accelerations. In prospective in vivo experiments, with 3.8-fold acceleration, the proposed method exhibited excellent spatial localization of metabolites and peak recovery for pyruvate and lactate at 7.0 T as well as for dihydroxyacetone and its metabolic products with a 4.5-kHz spectral span (140 ppm at 3.0 T).ConclusionsThis study demonstrated the feasibility of a new CS approach to accelerate high spectral bandwidth MRSI experiments. Entropy-Induced Self-Assembly of Colloidal Crystals with High Reflectivity and Narrow Reflection Bandwidth.

Project description:Cracks and defects, which could result in lower reflectivity and larger full width at half maximum (FWHM), are the major obstacles for obtaining highly ordered structures of colloidal crystals (CCs). The high-quality CCs with high reflectivity (more than 90%) and 9.2 nm narrow FWHM have been successfully fabricated using a fixed proportion of a soft matter system composed of silica particles (SPs), polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA), and ethanol. The influences of refractivity difference, volume fractions, and particle dimension on FWHM were illuminated. Firstly, we clarified the influences of the planar interface and the bending interface on the self-assembly. The CCs had been successfully fabricated on the planar interface and presented unfavorable results on the bending interface. Secondly, a hard sphere system consisting of SPs, PEGDA, and ethanol was established, and the entropy-driven phase transition mechanism of a polydisperse system was expounded. The FWHM and reflectivity of CCs showed an increasing trend with increasing temperature. Consequently, high-quality CCs were obtained by adjusting temperatures (ordered structure formed at 90 °C and solidified at 0 °C) based on the surface phase rule of the system. We acquired a profound understanding of the principle and process of self-assembly, which is significant for preparation and application of CCs such as optical filters.

High bandwidth synaptic communication and frequency tracking in human neocortex.

Project description:Neuronal firing, synaptic transmission, and its plasticity form the building blocks for processing and storage of information in the brain. It is unknown whether adult human synapses are more efficient in transferring information between neurons than rodent synapses. To test this, we recorded from connected pairs of pyramidal neurons in acute brain slices of adult human and mouse temporal cortex and probed the dynamical properties of use-dependent plasticity. We found that human synaptic connections were purely depressing and that they recovered three to four times more swiftly from depression than synapses in rodent neocortex. Thereby, during realistic spike trains, the temporal resolution of synaptic information exchange in human synapses substantially surpasses that in mice. Using information theory, we calculate that information transfer between human pyramidal neurons exceeds that of mouse pyramidal neurons by four to nine times, well into the beta and gamma frequency range. In addition, we found that human principal cells tracked fine temporal features, conveyed in received synaptic inputs, at a wider bandwidth than for rodents. Action potential firing probability was reliably phase-locked to input transients up to 1,000 cycles/s because of a steep onset of action potentials in human pyramidal neurons during spike trains, unlike in rodent neurons. Our data show that, in contrast to the widely held views of limited information transfer in rodent depressing synapses, fast recovering synapses of human neurons can actually transfer substantial amounts of information during spike trains. In addition, human pyramidal neurons are equipped to encode high synaptic information content. Thus, adult human cortical microcircuits relay information at a wider bandwidth than rodent microcircuits.

Continuous Compressed Sensing for Surface Dynamical Processes with Helium Atom Scattering.

Project description:Compressed Sensing (CS) techniques are used to measure and reconstruct surface dynamical processes with a helium spin-echo spectrometer for the first time. Helium atom scattering is a well established method for examining the surface structure and dynamics of materials at atomic sized resolution and the spin-echo technique opens up the possibility of compressing the data acquisition process. CS methods demonstrating the compressibility of spin-echo spectra are presented for several measurements. Recent developments on structured multilevel sampling that are empirically and theoretically shown to substantially improve upon the state of the art CS techniques are implemented. In addition, wavelet based CS approximations, founded on a new continuous CS approach, are used to construct continuous spectra. In order to measure both surface diffusion and surface phonons, which appear usually on different energy scales, standard CS techniques are not sufficient. However, the new continuous CS wavelet approach allows simultaneous analysis of surface phonons and molecular diffusion while reducing acquisition times substantially. The developed methodology is not exclusive to Helium atom scattering and can also be applied to other scattering frameworks such as neutron spin-echo and Raman spectroscopy.

Decoupling between calorimetric and dynamical glass transitions in high-entropy metallic glasses.

Project description:Glass transition is one of the unresolved critical issues in solid-state physics and materials science, during which a viscous liquid is frozen into a solid or structurally arrested state. On account of the uniform arrested mechanism, the calorimetric glass transition temperature (Tg) always follows the same trend as the dynamical glass transition (or α-relaxation) temperature (Tα) determined by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Here, we explored the correlations between the calorimetric and dynamical glass transitions of three prototypical high-entropy metallic glasses (HEMGs) systems. We found that the HEMGs present a depressed dynamical glass transition phenomenon, i.e., HEMGs with moderate calorimetric Tg represent the highest Tα and the maximum activation energy of α-relaxation. These decoupled glass transitions from thermal and mechanical measurements reveal the effect of high configurational entropy on the structure and dynamics of supercooled liquids and metallic glasses, which are associated with sluggish diffusion and decreased dynamic and spatial heterogeneities from high mixing entropy. The results have important implications in understanding the entropy effect on the structure and properties of metallic glasses for designing new materials with plenteous physical and mechanical performances.

High-order random Raman lasing in a PM fiber with ultimate efficiency and narrow bandwidth.

Project description:Random Raman lasers attract now a great deal of attention as they operate in non-active turbid or transparent scattering media. In the last case, single mode fibers with feedback via Rayleigh backscattering generate a high-quality unidirectional laser beam. However, such fiber lasers have rather poor spectral and polarization properties, worsening with increasing power and Stokes order. Here we demonstrate a linearly-polarized cascaded random Raman lasing in a polarization-maintaining fiber. The quantum efficiency of converting the pump (1.05 μm) into the output radiation is almost independent of the Stokes order, amounting to 79%, 83%, and 77% for the 1(st) (1.11 μm), 2(nd) (1.17 μm) and 3(rd) (1.23 μm) order, respectively, at the polarization extinction ratio >22 dB for all orders. The laser bandwidth grows with increasing order, but it is almost independent of power in the 1-10 W range, amounting to ~1, ~2 and ~3 nm for orders 1-3, respectively. So, the random Raman laser exhibits no degradation of output characteristics with increasing Stokes order. A theory adequately describing the unique laser features has been developed. Thus, a full picture of the cascaded random Raman lasing in fibers is shown.

Decoupling excitons from high-frequency vibrations in organic molecules.

Project description:The coupling of excitons in π-conjugated molecules to high-frequency vibrational modes, particularly carbon-carbon stretch modes (1,000-1,600 cm-1) has been thought to be unavoidable1,2. These high-frequency modes accelerate non-radiative losses and limit the performance of light-emitting diodes, fluorescent biomarkers and photovoltaic devices. Here, by combining broadband impulsive vibrational spectroscopy, first-principles modelling and synthetic chemistry, we explore exciton-vibration coupling in a range of π-conjugated molecules. We uncover two design rules that decouple excitons from high-frequency vibrations. First, when the exciton wavefunction has a substantial charge-transfer character with spatially disjoint electron and hole densities, we find that high-frequency modes can be localized to either the donor or acceptor moiety, so that they do not significantly perturb the exciton energy or its spatial distribution. Second, it is possible to select materials such that the participating molecular orbitals have a symmetry-imposed non-bonding character and are, thus, decoupled from the high-frequency vibrational modes that modulate the π-bond order. We exemplify both these design rules by creating a series of spin radical systems that have very efficient near-infrared emission (680-800 nm) from charge-transfer excitons. We show that these systems have substantial coupling to vibrational modes only below 250 cm-1, frequencies that are too low to allow fast non-radiative decay. This enables non-radiative decay rates to be suppressed by nearly two orders of magnitude in comparison to π-conjugated molecules with similar bandgaps. Our results show that losses due to coupling to high-frequency modes need not be a fundamental property of these systems.

Nonperturbative dynamical decoupling with random control.

Project description:Parametric fluctuations or stochastic signals are introduced into the rectangular pulse sequence to investigate the feasibility of random dynamical decoupling. In a large parameter region, we find that the out-of-order control pulses work as well as the regular pulses for dynamical decoupling and dissipation suppression. Calculations and analysis are enabled by and based on a nonperturbative dynamical decoupling approach allowed by an exact quantum-state-diffusion equation. When the average frequency and duration of the pulse sequence take proper values, the random control sequence is robust, fault-tolerant, and insensitive to pulse strength deviations and interpulse temporal separation in the quasi-periodic sequence. This relaxes the operational requirements placed on quantum control devices to a great deal.

Masking of low-frequency signals by high-frequency, high-level narrow bands of noise.

Project description:Low-frequency masking by intense high-frequency noise bands, referred to as remote masking (RM), was the first evidence to challenge energy-detection models of signal detection. Its underlying mechanisms remain unknown. RM was measured in five normal-hearing young-adults at 250, 350, 500, and 700 Hz using equal-power, spectrally matched random-phase noise (RPN) and low-noise noise (LNN) narrowband maskers. RM was also measured using equal-power, two-tone complex (TC2) and eight-tone complex (TC8). Maskers were centered at 3000 Hz with one or two equivalent rectangular bandwidths (ERBs). Masker levels varied from 80 to 95 dB sound pressure level in 5 dB steps. LNN produced negligible masking for all conditions. An increase in bandwidth in RPN yielded greater masking over a wider frequency region. Masking for TC2 was limited to 350 and 700 Hz for one ERB but shifted to only 700 Hz for two ERBs. A spread of masking to 500 and 700 Hz was observed for TC8 when the bandwidth was increased from one to two ERBs. Results suggest that high-frequency noise bands at high levels could generate significant low-frequency masking. It is possible that listeners experience significant RM due to the amplification of various competing noises that might have significant implications for speech perception in noise.
