Ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) porous Zn(OH)<sub>2</sub> nanosheets (PNs) have been fabricated by using one-dimensional Cu nanowires as backbones. PNs have thicknesses of about 3.8 nm and pore sizes of 4~10 nm. To form "smart" porous nanosheets, DNA aptamers were covalently conjugated on the surface of PNs. Project description:Rational design of efficient and stable electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has attracted wide attention. Noble metal-based electrocatalysts with ultrathin structures and highly exposed active surfaces are essential to boost the HER performance, while the simple synthetic strategies remain challenging. Herein, we reported a facile urea-mediated method to synthesize hierarchical ultrathin Rh nanosheets (Rh NSs) without using toxic reducing agents and structure directing agents in the reaction. The hierarchical ultrathin nanosheet structure and grain boundary atoms endow Rh NSs with excellent HER activities, which only requires a lower overpotential of 39 mV in 0.5 M H2SO4 compared to the 80 mV of Rh nanoparticles (Rh NPs). Extending the synthesis method to alloys, hierarchical ultrathin RhNi nanosheets (RhNi NSs) can be also obtained. Benefiting from the optimization of electronic structure and abundant active surfaces, RhNi NSs only require an overpotential of 27 mV. This work provides a simple and promising method to construct ultrathin nanosheet electrocatalysts for highly active electrocatalytic performance.

Project description:Augmenting the oriented attachment (OA) crystal growth phenomena, herein, we demonstrate fabrication of ultrathin CuO nanowires from self-assembled one-dimensional (1D) nanowires of Cu(OH)2 nanocrystals. A facile environmentally benign sol-gel approach, which utilizes base-catalyzed hydrolysis followed by directed self-assembly and crystal growth of nanocrystals, is developed to prepare Cu(OH)2 nanowires. The sol of Cu(OH)2 nanocrystals shows aggregative self-assembly guided by the OA crystal growth process to form ultrathin Cu(OH)2 nanowires, with an average length of 675 ± 4 nm and diameter of 6 ± 2 nm. The time-dependent UV-visible spectral traces, along with real-time imaging of nanocrystals self-assembly and growth under the transmission electron microscope, are evidenced the concept of the OA crystal growth directed self-assembly, yielding 1D colloidal nanoarrays of Cu(OH)2. The powder XRD traces collected during the self-assembly and crystal growth process reveal the directional aggregative crystal growth along the facet of [001], confirming the OA directed crystal growth and fusion of nanocrystals to yield 1D nanostructures. The gradual blue-shift in optical absorption maxima from 770 nm in initial precursor solution, to 670 nm for Cu(OH)2 nanocrystals sol, and finally to 647 nm for self-assembled 1D Cu(OH)2 nanowires have further evidenced the formation of Cu(OH)2 nanowires. Upon subjecting self-assembled Cu(OH)2 nanowires for post-annealing treatment, ultrathin CuO nanowires with average length of 7 ± 0.50 μm and diameter of 27 ± 2 nm is obtained in high purity. The experimental powder XRD patterns of Cu(OH)2 and CuO nanowires match the simulated XRD patterns, indexing the crystal unit cell structures to orthorhombic and monoclinic, respectively. The tailored narrow optical band gaps for Cu(OH)2 and CuO nanowires are found to be 1.51 eV and 1.10 eV. The theoretical band gap predicted for Cu(OH)2 nanowires is 1.52 eV and is in good agreement with its optical band gap, whereas theoretical band computed for CuO nanowires is 0.13 eV lower than from its optical band gap.

Project description:We report a facile bottom-up synthetic approach to preparing ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) palladium nanosheets (PdNSs) with selectively exposed surface facets. Our synthetic strategy is based on the utilization of the nanoconfined lamellar mesophases of amphiphilic functional surfactants to template the growth of PdNSs in aqueous solution. Preferential adsorption of functional groups (e.g., COOH, pyridyl and quaternary ammonium) and halide counter ions (e.g., Br- and Cl-) in the long-chain surfactants onto different Pd planes results in the epitaxial growth of {100}, {110} and {111}-exposed surface facets of ultrathin PdNSs. Our synthetic approach is a general, powerful and scalable method to precisely control the surface facets of ultrathin 2D PdNSs, thus providing an opportunity to evaluate facet-dependent catalytic performance of Pd nanocrystals. Ultrathin PdNSs have been examined as the electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs). We show that {100}-exposed PdNSs display superior catalytic activity and stability for HERs, compared to that of {110} and {111}-exposed ones as well as their bulk counterparts. Conceivably, our findings will offer a general guideline in rational design of surfactant templates for other 2D metal nanosheets.

Project description:The title compound, dizinc cadmium hydroxide tetraoxido-vanadate, Zn(1.86)Cd(0.14)(OH)VO(4), was prepared under low-temperature hydro-thermal conditions. It is isostructural with Zn(2)(OH)VO(4) and Cu(2)(OH)VO(4). In the crystal structure, chains of edge-sharing [ZnO(6)] octahedra are inter-connected by VO(4) tetra-hedra (site symmetries of both V atoms and their coordination polyhedra are .m.) to form a three-dimensional [Zn(OH)VO(4)](2-) framework with channels occupied by Zn and Zn/Cd cations adopting trigonal-bipyramidal and distorted octa-hedral coordinations, respectively. Zn(1.86)Cd(0.14)(OH)VO(4) is topologically related to adamite-type phases, and descloizite- and tsumcorite-type structures.

Project description:Two-dimensional materials play a vital role in the current electronic industry in the fabrication of devices. In the present work, we have exfoliated and stabilized the insulating hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) by means of a polymer-assisted liquid-phase technique. Further, the highly viscous ink of hBN was prepared, and its printability on various commercially available substrates was studied. The morphology of the printed patterns reveals the layered arrangement of hBN. The various electrical and dielectric characterizations, carried out on a metal-insulator-metal capacitor, testified its potential applications in various fields of printed electronics.

Project description:The copper-based MOF, HKUST-1 has been applied for humidity sensing owing to hydrophilic ligands and open metal sites which are suitable for sensitively detecting moisture. However, most of the research on the sensor HKUST-1 focuses on the role of the central metal. There are few reports on the morphology-activity relationship of HKUST-1. In this work, we synthesized two kinds of HKUST-1 including octahedral structures and ultrathin nanosheets, and systematically studied the performance of moisture sensing. Compared to HKUST-1 octahedra, HKUST-1 nanosheets showed lower and wider detectable humidity range, achieving a fast response. Starting from the exposed hydrophilic functional groups of HKUST-1 nanosheets, we have revealed that hydrophilic ligands play an important role in improving the adsorption capacity during the adsorption process. In addition, ultra-thin HKUST-1 nanosheets act as an excellent mass transfer medium, accelerating proton transfer and water molecule movement. To further improve the performance of the HKUST-1 humidity sensor, black phosphorus quantum dots (BPQDs) with a high surface reactivity were used to build a composite sensing platform. The excellent proton transfer capability of BPQDs leads to one order of magnitude improvement in the sensitivity of the BPQDs/HKUST-1 systems compared to HKUST-1 only.

Project description:Exploring high-efficiency, low-cost, and long-life bifunctional self-supporting electrocatalysts is of great significance for the practical application of advanced rechargeable Zn-air batteries (ZABs), especially flexible solid-state ZABs. Herein, ultrathin CoFe-layered double hydroxide (CoFe-LDH) nanosheets are strongly coupled on the surface of leaf-like bimetallic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived hybrid carbon (Co@NC) nanoflake nanoarrays supported by carbon cloth (CC) via a facile and scalable method for rechargeable and flexible ZABs. This interfacial engineering for CoFe-LDHs on Co@NC improves the electronic conductivity of CoFe-LDH nanosheets as well as achieves the balance of oxygen evolution reduction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity. The unique three-dimensional (3D) open interconnected hierarchical structure facilitates the transport of substances during the electrochemical process while ensuring adequate exposure of OER/ORR active centers. When applied as an additive-free air cathode in rechargeable liquid ZABs, CC/Co@NC/CoFe-LDH-700 demonstrates high open-circuit potential of 1.47 V, maximum power density of 129.3 mW cm-2, and satisfactory specific capacity of 710.7 mAh g-1Zn. Further, the flexible all-solid-state ZAB assembled by CC/Co@NC/CoFe-LDH-700 displays gratifying mechanical flexibility and stable cycling performance over 40 h. More significantly, the series-connected flexible ZAB is further verified as a chain power supply for LED strips and performs well throughout the bending process, showing great application prospects in portable and wearable electronics. This work sheds new light on the design of high-performance self-supporting non-precious metal bifunctional electrocatalysts for OER/ORR and air cathodes for rechargeable ZABs.

Project description:Hydrated Ni(OH)2 and activated carbon based electrodes are widely used in electrochemical applications. Here we report the fabrication of symmetric supercapacitors using Ni(OH)2 nanosheets and activated carbon as positive and negative electrodes in aqueous electrolyte, respectively. The asymmetric supercapacitors stack connected in series exhibited a stable device voltage of 9.6?V and delivered a stored high energy and power of 30 mWh and 1632 mW, respectively. The fabricated device shows an excellent electrochemical stability and high retention of 81% initial capacitance after 100,000 charge-discharges cycling at high charging current of 500?mA. The positive electrode material Ni(OH)2 nanosheets was prepared through chemical decomposition of nickel hexacyanoferrate complex. The XRD pattern revealed the high crystalline nature of Ni(OH)2 with an average crystallite size of ~10?nm. The nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms of Ni(OH)2 nanosheets indicate the formation of mesoporous Ni(OH)2 nanosheets. The chemical synthesis of Ni(OH)2 results the formation of hierarchical nanosheets that are randomly oriented which was confirmed by FE-SEM and HR-TEM analysis. The negative electrode, activated porous carbon (OPAA-700) was obtained from orange peel waste. The electrochemical properties of Ni(OH)2 nanosheets and OPAA-700 were studied and exhibit a high specific capacity of 1126?C/g and high specific capacitance of 311?F/g at current density of 2?A/g, respectively. Ni(OH)2 nanosheets delivered a good rate performance and remarkable capacitance retention of 96% at high current density of 32?A/g.

Project description:Flexible, charged Pd nanosheets were prepared by using short chain thiolated carboxylic acids and amines. They could wrap around amine or hydroxyl functionalized micron-sized spheres driven by electrostatic interactions. Upon incubation with HepG2 cells, the positively charged cysteamine (CA) functionalized Pd nanosheets exhibited a much higher cytotoxicity, showing more than 80% cell death at 100 ppm than the negatively charged 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) functionalized ones which caused 30% cell death. The results show through surface functionalization Pd nanosheets can be modified to interact differently with HepG2 cancerous cells, resulting in varied cytotoxicity.

Project description:Large-scale single-crystalline ultrathin boron nanosheets (UBNSs, ≈10 nm) are fabricated through an effective vapor-solid process via thermal decomposition of diborane. The UBNSs have obvious advantages over thicker boron nanomaterials in many aspects. Specifically, the UBNSs demonstrate excellent field emission performances with a low turn-on field, Eto, of 3.60 V μm-1 and a good stability. Further, the dependence of (turn-on field) Eto/(threshold field) Ethr and effective work function, Φe, on temperature is investigated and the possible mechanism of temperature-dependent field emission phenomenon has been discussed. Moreover, electronic transport in a single UBNS reveals it to be an intrinsic p-type semiconductor behavior with carrier mobility about 1.26 × 10-1 cm2 V-1 s-1, which is the best data in reported works. Interestingly, a multiconductive mechanism coexisting phenomenon has been explored based on the study of temperature-dependent conductivity behavior of the UBNSs. Besides, the photodetector device fabricated from single-crystalline UBNS demonstrates good sensitivity, reliable stability, and fast response, obviously superior to other reported boron nanomaterials. Such superior electronic-optical performances are originated from the high quality of single crystal and large specific surface area of the UBNSs, suggesting the potential applications of the UBNSs in field-emitters, interconnects, integrated circuits, and optoelectronic devices.
