Antifungal activity of water-stable copper-containing metal-organic frameworks.

ABSTRACT: Although metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) or porous coordination polymers have been widely studied, their antimicrobial activities have not yet been fully investigated. In this work, antifungal activity of copper-based benzene-tricarboxylate MOF (Cu-BTC MOF), which is water stable and industrially interesting, is investigated against Candida albicans, Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus oryzae and Fusarium oxysporum. The Cu-BTC MOF can effectively inhibit the growth rate of C. albicans and remarkably inhibit the spore growth of A. niger, A. oryzae and F. oxysporum. This finding shows the potential of using Cu-BTC MOF as a strong biocidal material against representative yeasts and moulds that are commonly found in the food and agricultural industries.

Characterization of Adsorption Enthalpy of Novel Water-Stable Zeolites and Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Project description:Water adsorption is becoming increasingly important for many applications including thermal energy storage, desalination, and water harvesting. To develop such applications, it is essential to understand both adsorbent-adsorbate and adsorbate-adsorbate interactions, and also the energy required for adsorption/desorption processes of porous material-adsorbate systems, such as zeolites and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). In this study, we present a technique to characterize the enthalpy of adsorption/desorption of zeolites and MOF-801 with water as an adsorbate by conducting desorption experiments with conventional differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). With this method, the enthalpies of adsorption of previously uncharacterized adsorbents were estimated as a function of both uptake and temperature. Our characterizations indicate that the adsorption enthalpies of type I zeolites can increase to greater than twice the latent heat whereas adsorption enthalpies of MOF-801 are nearly constant for a wide range of vapor uptakes.

Pb2+-Containing Metal-Organic Rotaxane Frameworks (MORFs).

Project description:The metal-organic rotaxane framework (MORF) structures with the advantage of mechanically interlocking molecules (MIMs) have attracted intense interest from the chemical community. In this study, a set of MORFs (i.e., MORF-Pb-1 and MORF-Pb-2) are constructed using Pb2+, a tetraimidazolium macrocycle (Texas-sized molecular box; 14+), and aromatic dicarboxylate (p-phthalate dianions (PTADAs; 2) or 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylate dianions (3)) via a one-pot three-layer diffusion protocol. In particular, an unusual Pb…Pb weak interaction was shown in MORF-Pb-1 (charactered with distance of 3.656 Å).

Different Dimensional Copper-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks with Enzyme-Mimetic Activity for Antibacterial Therapy.

Project description:Fighting against bacterial infection and accelerating wound healing remain important and challenging in infected wound care. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have received much attention for their optimized and enhanced catalytic performance in different dimensions of these challenges. The size and morphology of nanomaterials are important in their physiochemical properties and thereby their biological functions. Enzyme-mimicking catalysts, based on MOFs of different dimensions, display varying degrees of peroxidase (POD)-like activity toward hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) decomposition into toxic hydroxyl radicals (•OH) for bacterial inhibition and accelerating wound healing. In this study, we investigated the two most studied representatives of copper-based MOFs (Cu-MOFs), three-dimensional (3D) HKUST-1 and two-dimensional (2D) Cu-TCPP, for antibacterial therapy. HKUST-1, with a uniform and octahedral 3D structure, showed higher POD-like activity, resulting in H2O2 decomposition for •OH generation rather than Cu-TCPP. Because of the efficient generation of toxic •OH, both Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Gram-positive methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus could be eliminated under a lower concentration of H2O2. Animal experiments indicated that the as-prepared HKUST-1 effectively accelerated wound healing with good biocompatibility. These results reveal the multivariate dimensions of Cu-MOFs with high POD-like activity, providing good potential for further stimulation of specific bacterial binding therapies in the future.

Reversible Atmospheric Water Harvesting Using Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Project description:The passive capture of clean water from humid air without reliance on bulky equipment and high energy has been a substantial challenge and has attracted significant interest as a potential environmentally friendly alternative to traditional water harvesting methods. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offer a high potential for this application due to their structural versatility which permits scalable, facile modulations of structural and functional elements. Although MOFs are promising materials for water harvesting, little research has been done to address the microstructure-adsorbing characteristics relationship with respect to the dynamic adsorption-desorption process. In this article, we present a parametric study of nine hydrolytically stable MOFs with diverse structures for unraveling fundamental material properties that govern the kinetics of water sequestration in this class of materials as well as investigating overall uptake capacity gravimetrically. The effects of temperature, relative humidity, and powder bed thickness on the adsorption-desorption process are explored for achieving optimal operational parameters. We found that Zr-MOF-808 can produce up to 8.66 LH2O kg-1MOF day-1, an extraordinary finding that outperforms any previously reported values for MOF-based systems. The presented findings help to deepen our understanding and guide the discovery of next-generation water harvesting materials.

Polyamidoamine Dendrimers Functionalized Water-Stable Metal-Organic Frameworks for Sensitive Fluorescent Detection of Heavy Metal Ions in Aqueous Solution.

Project description:In this work, polyamidoamine (PAMAM)-functionalized water-stable Al-based metal-organic frameworks (MIL-53(Al)-NH2) were proposed with enhanced fluorescence intensity, and used for the sensitive detection of heavy metal ions in aqueous solution. The size and morphology of MIL-53(Al)-NH2 were effectively optimized by regulating the component of the reaction solvents. PAMAM dendrimers were subsequently grafted onto the surface with glutaraldehyde as a cross-linking agent. It was found that the size and morphology of MIL-53(Al)-NH2 have great influence on their fluorescence properties, and PAMAM grafting could distinctly further improve their fluorescence intensity. With higher fluorescence intensity, the PAMAM-grafted MIL-53(Al)-NH2 showed good linearity (R2 = 0.9925-0.9990) and satisfactory sensitivity (LOD = 1.1-8.6 μmol) in heavy metal ions determination. Fluorescence enhancement and heavy metal ions detection mechanisms were discussed following the experimental results. Furthermore, analogous water-stable Materials of Institute Lavoisier (MIL) metal-organic frameworks such as MIL-53(Fe)-NH2 were also proved to have similar fluorescence enhancement performance after PAMAM modification, which demonstrates the universality of the method and the great application prospects in the design of PAMAM-functionalized high-sensitivity fluorescence sensors.

Tunable Low-Pressure Water Adsorption in Stable Multivariate Metal-Organic Frameworks for Boosting Water-Based Ultralow-Temperature-Driven Refrigeration.

Project description:The green water-based adsorption refrigeration is considered as a promising strategy to realize near-zero-carbon cooling applications. Although many metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been developed as water adsorbents, their cooling performance are commonly limited by the insufficient water uptakes below P/P0 = 0.2. Herein, the development of multivariate MOFs (MTV-MOFs) is reported to highly modulate and boost the low-pressure water uptake for improving coefficient of performance (COP) for refrigeration. Through ligand exchange in the pristine MIL-125-NH2 , a series of MTV-MOFs with bare nitrogen sites are designed and synthesized. The resulting MIL-125-NH2 /MD-5% exhibits the significantly improved water uptake of 0.39 g g-1 at 298 K and P/P0 = 0.2, which is three times higher than MIL-125-NH2 (0.12 g g-1 ) and comparable to some benchmark materials including KMF-1 (0.4 g g-1 ) and MIP-200 (0.36 g g-1 ). Combined with its low-temperature regeneration, fast sorption kinetics and high stability, MIL-125-NH2 /MD-5% achieves one of the highest COP values (0.8) and working capacities (0.24 g g-1 ) for refrig-2 under an ultralow-driven temperature of 65 °C, which are higher than some best-performing MOFs such as MIP-200 (0.74 and 0.11 g g-1 ) and KMF-2 (0.62 and 0.16 g g-1 ), making it among the best adsorbents for efficient ultralow-temperature-driven refrigeration.

Water-Stable Nanoscale Zirconium-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks for the Effective Removal of Glyphosate from Aqueous Media.

Project description:Two water-stable zirconium-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) (NU-1000 and UiO-67) have been synthesized in various size scales (100-2000 nm) for the adsorptive removal of glyphosate from the aqueous media. Both NU-1000 and UiO-67 possess a three-dimensional structure; NU-1000 consists of triangular micropores and wide mesoporous channels (31 Å), whereas UiO-67 has cage-like pores [octahedral (16 Å) and tetrahedral (14 Å) cages]. NU-1000 comprises Zr6(μ3-O)4(μ3-OH)4(H2O)4(OH)4, and UiO-67 contains Zr6O4(OH)4 as secondary building units. These units act as Lewis acid nodes and can interact with the Lewis base phosphate group of the glyphosate. The time taken for reaching equilibrium is found to be reduced considerably as the size of the MOF decreases. The smaller the particle size, the lesser is the diffusion barrier for the analyte, which enhances the interaction between Lewis acidic metal nodes and the Lewis basic center of the glyphosate molecule. NU-1000 was found to be better compared to UiO-67, both in terms of efficiency and reusability. This might be due to the larger pore diameters of the NU-1000. Theoretical calculations revealed that the interaction energy of glyphosate with the nodes of NU-1000 is higher (-37.63 KJ mol-1) compared to UiO-67 (-17.37 KJ mol-1), which might be the possible reason for the higher efficiency of NU-1000.

A new post-synthetic polymerization strategy makes metal-organic frameworks more stable.

Project description:Metal-organic frameworks are of interest in a number of host-guest applications. However, their weak coordination bonding often leads to instability in aqueous environments, particularly at extreme pH, and hence, is a challenging topic in the field. In this work, a two-step, post-synthetic polymerization method is used to create a series of highly hydrophobic, stable MOF composites. The MOFs are first coated with thin layers of polydopamine from free-base dopamine under a mild oxygen atmosphere, which then undergoes a Michael addition to covalently graft hydrophobic molecules to the external MOF surface. This easy, mild post-synthetic modification is shown to significantly improve the stability of a number of structurally diverse MOFs including HKUST-1 (Cu), ZIF-67 (Co), ZIF-8 (Zn), UiO-66 (Zr), Cu-TDPAT (Cu), Mg-MOF-74 (Mg) and MIL-100 (Fe) in wet, caustic (acidic and basic) environments as determined by powder X-ray diffraction and surface area measurements.

Metal-Organic Frameworks as Promising Photosensitizers for Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting.

Project description:Ti-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are demonstrated as promising photosensitizers for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Photocurrents of TiO2 nano wire photoelectrodes can be improved under visible light through sensitization with aminated Ti-based MOFs. As a host, other sensitizers or catalysts such as Au nanoparticles can be incorporated into the MOF layer thus further improving the PEC water splitting efficiency.

Holmium-Containing Metal-Organic Frameworks as Modifiers for PEBA-Based Membranes.

Project description:Recently, there has been an active search for new modifiers to create hybrid polymeric materials for various applications, in particular, membrane technology. One of the topical modifiers is metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which can significantly alter the characteristics of obtained mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). In this work, new holmium-based MOFs (Ho-MOFs) were synthesized for polyether block amide (PEBA) modification to develop novel MMMs with improved properties. The study of Ho-MOFs, polymers and membranes was carried out by methods of X-ray phase analysis, scanning electron and atomic force microscopies, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, low-temperature nitrogen adsorption, dynamic and kinematic viscosity, static and dynamic light scattering, gel permeation chromatography, thermogravimetric analysis and contact angle measurements. Synthesized Ho-MOFs had different X-ray structures, particle forms and sizes depending on the ligand used. To study the effect of Ho-MOF modifier on membrane transport properties, PEBA/Ho-MOFs membrane retention capacity was evaluated in vacuum fourth-stage filtration for dye removal (Congo Red, Fuchsin, Glycine thymol blue, Methylene blue, Eriochrome Black T). Modified membranes demonstrated improved flux and rejection coefficients for dyes containing amino groups: Congo Red, Fuchsin (PEBA/Ho-1,3,5-H3btc membrane possessed optimal properties: 81% and 68% rejection coefficients for Congo Red and Fuchsin filtration, respectively, and 0.7 L/(m2s) flux).
