Notes on two crabs (Crustacea, Brachyura, Dynomenidae and Iphiculidae) collected from red coral beds in northern Taiwan, including a new species of Pariphiculus Alcock, 1896.

ABSTRACT: Two brachyuran species of the families Dynonemidae and Iphiculidae are reported from red coral beds in northern Taiwan. The dynonemid Acanthodromia margarita (Alcock, 1899) has hitherto been reported from the Andaman Sea, Japan, and Philippines and the species is here recorded for the first time from Taiwan. A new species of iphiculid, Pariphiculus stellatussp. n., is also described. The new Pariphiculus, which also occurs in the Philippines, is superficially similar to P. agariciferus Ihle, 1918, a species known from Indonesia, Japan, Philippines, South China Sea, Taiwan, and Vanuatu, but can be distinguished by distinct carapace, pleonal and male first gonopod features.

Project description:The systematics of four species of the homolodromiid genus Dicranodromia A. Milne-Edwards, 1880, from East Asia and the Philippines is reappraised: D.danielae Ng & McLay, 2005, D.doederleini Ortmann, 1892, D.karubar Guinot, 1993, and D.martini Guinot, 1995; and key characters such as the epistome, gonopods, and spermatheca are figured in detail. Two new species, D.erinaceussp. nov. and D.robustasp. nov., are described from Taiwan and the Philippines, respectively. Dicranodromiaerinaceussp. nov. resembles D.spinulata Guinot, 1995, and D.delli Ahyong, 2008 (from New Caledonia and New Zealand) but can be separated by its distinctly spinulated carapace surfaces and proportionately shorter fifth ambulatory legs. Dicranodromiarobustasp. nov. is superficially similar to D.baffini (Alcock & Anderson, 1899) and D.karubar Guinot, 1993, but can easily be separated by possessing a broad dorsoventrally flattened infraorbital tooth. A genetic study of the species using the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I gene confirms that the taxa are distinct, with D.erinaceussp. nov. coming out in a well-supported clade from congeners. The megalopa of D.doederleini is also reported for the first time.

Rediscovery of Orientotlosiishibai Sakai, 1980 (Crustacea, Decapoda, Brachyura, Leucosiidae) in Taiwan.

Project description:The leucosiid crab Orientotlosiishibai Sakai, 1980 was described from one female collected off western Japan and had never been reported since. The species is now recorded from southwestern Taiwan for the first time, and is redescribed and figured at length. Although Sakai argued that Orientotlos Sakai, 1980, is closely related to Oreophorus Rüppell, 1830 and Atlantotlos Doflein, 1904, the genus is actually morphologically most similar to Merocryptus A. Milne-Edwards, 1873. The two genera, however, still differ markedly in a number of key carapace and cheliped characters.

Diversity in the Taiwanese Swimming Crabs (Crustacea: Brachyura: Portunidae) Estimated through DNA Barcodes, with Descriptions of 14 New Records.

Project description:The swimming crabs (family Portunidae) are distributed worldwide and commonly inhabit estuaries, mangroves, reefs, shallow and the deep sea. Previously, 75 species and 19 genera in this family were known to Taiwan. Our study examined specimens in Taiwanese waters, including the islands, collected between 2016 and 2020 or deposited in museums. Through the cytochrome oxidase subunit I DNA barcode marker and morphological examination, 71 species were identified. The minimum interspecific distances were greater than 4.09%, except in two unresolved groups: Charybdis miles (De Haan, 1835) and Ch. sagamiensis Parisi, 1916, as well as Thranita pelsarti (Montgomery, 1931) and Thr. prymna (Herbst, 1803). In addition, 14 species belonging to nine genera were confirmed as new records to Taiwan, viz. Carupa ohashii Takeda, 1993, Lupocyclus inaequalis (Walker, 1887), Luu. tugelae Barnard, 1950, Lupocycloporus minutus (Shen, 1937), Monomia gladiator (Fabricius, 1798), M. lucida Koch & Ďuriš, 2018, Podophthalmus minabensis Sakai, 1961, Thalamita gatavakensis Nobili, 1906, Tha. spinifera Borradaile, 1902, Thalamitoides quadridens A. Milne-Edwards, 1869, Tho. tridens A. Milne-Edwards, 1869, Thr. cerasma (Wee & Ng, 1995), Thr. coeruleipes (Hombron & Jacquinot, 1846) and Xiphonectes tuberculosus (A. Milne-Edwards, 1861). This study thus raises the total number of Portunidae species in Taiwan to 89.

Cantopotamon, A New Genus of Freshwater Crabs from Guangdong, China, with Descriptions of Four New Species (Crustacea: Decapoda: Brachyura: Potamidae).

Ahyong, and Hsi-Te Shih (2017) A new genus and four new species of freshwater crab, Cantopotamon zhuhaiense n. gen., n. sp., C. shangchuanense n. gen., n. sp., C. hengqinense n. gen., n. sp. and C. yangxiense n. gen., n. sp. are described from Guangdong, China, based on morphology and two mitochondrial markers (16S rDNA and cytochrome oxidase subunit I). Species of Cantopotamon closely resemble species of Yarepotamon Dai & Türkay, 1997, but differ by the combination of carapace, third maxilliped, male pleon, male first gonopod and female vulva characters. Molecular data derived from the mitochondrial 16S rDNA also supports the establishment of the new genus.

Geosesarmamirum, a new species of semi-terrestrial sesarmid crab (Crustacea, Decapoda, Brachyura) from central Taiwan.

Project description:A new species of semi-terrestrial sesarmid crab of the genus Geosesarma De Man, 1892, is described from central Taiwan. Geosesarmamirum sp. nov. is distinct in possessing a strong transverse crest on the inner surface of the male chela and a diagnostic male first gonopod which is relatively long and stout, with the distal chitinous part broad and spatuliform. Like most Geosesarma species, G.mirum sp. nov. has large eggs and direct development, contrasting with the only other species known from Taiwan, G.hednon Ng, Liu and Schubart, 2004, which has small eggs and planktotrophic larvae.

Three new records of Nannosquillidae from Taiwan with notes on their ecology (Crustacea, Stomatopoda, Lysiosquilloidea).

Project description:The genus Pullosquilla Manning, 1978, including P. litoralis, P. thomassini, and P. pardus, has been found in Taiwan for the first time. All three species live in a subtidal sand flat north of the Bitou fishing port within the Kenting National Park, Taiwan. Adult specimens were examined, illustrated, and photographed. The habitat, which all three species share, is described. The implication of such closely related species sharing the same habitat is discussed.

Revision of the freshwater crabs of the Johora tahanensis (Bott, 1966) species group (Crustacea, Brachyura, Potamidae), with a key to the genus.

Project description:The taxonomy of the potamid freshwater crabs of the Johora tahanensis (Bott, 1966) species group (Potamoidea) is revised. Seven species are recognised, all from Peninsular Malaysia and southern Thailand, three of which are described as new. The three new species were previously identified as J. tahanensis but can be distinguished by characters of the carapace, male first gonopod, and vulva. A revised key to the 18 recognised species of Johora Bott, 1966, is provided.

Two new species of freshwater crabs of the genera Eosamon Yeo & Ng, 2007 and Indochinamon Yeo & Ng, 2007 (Crustacea, Brachyura, Potamidae) from southern Yunnan, China.

Project description:Two new species of potamid crabs, Eosamon daiae sp. nov. and Indochinamon malipoense sp. nov. are described from the Sino-Burmese border, southwestern Yunnan and from the Sino-Vietnamese border, southeastern Yunnan, China. The two new species can be distinguished from their closest congeners by several characters, among which is the form of the first gonopod structures. Molecular analyses based on partial mitochondrial 16S rDNA sequences also support the systematic status of these new taxa.

Harryplax severus, a new genus and species of an unusual coral rubble-inhabiting crab from Guam (Crustacea, Brachyura, Christmaplacidae).

Project description:Harryplax severus, a new genus and species of coral rubble-dwelling pseudozioid crab is described from the island of Guam in the western Pacific Ocean. The unusual morphological features of its carapace, thoracic sternum, eyes, antennules, pereopods and gonopods place it in the family Christmaplacidae Naruse & Ng, 2014. A suite of characters on the cephalothorax, pleon and appendages distinguishes Harryplax severusgen. & sp. n. from the previously sole representative of the family, Christmaplax mirabilis Naruse & Ng, 2014, described from Christmas Island in the eastern Indian Ocean. This represents the first record of Christmaplacidae in the Pacific Ocean. With the discovery of a second genus, a revised diagnosis for Christmaplacidae is provided.

Notes on the Foraging Strategies of the Giant Robber Crab Birgus latro (Anomala) on Christmas Island: Evidence for Active Predation on Red Crabs Gecarcoidea natalis (Brachyura).

Project description:Jakob Krieger, Michelle M. Drew, Bill S. Hansson, and Steffen Harzsch (2016) Christmas Island, Indian Ocean, currently supports one of the largest populations of the giant terrestrial robber crab, Birgus latro (Crustacea, Anomala, Coenobitidae), the largest land living arthropod. Robber crabs are considered opportunistic omnivores feeding on a diversity of plants as well as animal derived foods. Previous reports indicate that the B. latro is primarily an omnivorous scavenger; however, there is some anecdotal evidence suggesting that the species may also hunt actively. Between 2010 and 2012 during three field trips to Christmas Island, we observed and documented active predatory behavior of B. latro on the endemic Christmas Island red crab, Gecarcoidea natalis (Brachyura, Gecarcinidae). Our observations suggest that B. latro does actively hunt, and exhibits at least two distinct predatory strategies. Large robber crabs are able to actively overwhelm and kill red crabs, while smaller individuals are likely to provoke red crabs to autotomize limbs on which to feed. These findings may indicate a much tighter predator-prey relationship between robber crabs and red crabs than considered before.
