Data on optimum recycle aggregate content in production of new structural concrete.

ABSTRACT: This data presented herein are the research summary of "mechanical behavior and durability performance of concrete containing recycled concrete aggregate" (Paul, 2011) [1]. The results reported in this article relate to an important parameter of optimum content of recycle concrete aggregate (RCA) in production of new concrete for both structural and non-structural applications. For the purpose of the research various types of physical, mechanical and durability tests are performed for concrete made with different percentages of RCA. Therefore, this data set can be a great help of the readers to understand the mechanism of RCA in relates to the concrete properties.

A New Composite Slab Using Crushed Waste Tires as Fine Aggregate in Self-Compacting Lightweight Aggregate Concrete.

Project description:A composite slab comprised of self-compacting rubber lightweight aggregate concrete (SCRLC) and profiled steel sheeting is a new type of structural element with a series of superior properties. This paper presents an experimental research and finite element analysis (FEA) of the flexural behavior of composite slabs consisting of SCRLC to develop a new floor system. Four composite slabs specimens with different shear spans (450 mm and 800 mm) and SCRLC (0% and 30% in rubber particles substitution ratio) are prepared, and the flexural properties including failure modes, deflection at mid-span, profiled steel sheeting, and concrete surface stain at mid-span and end slippage are investigated by four-point bending tests. The experimental results indicate that applying SCRLC30 in composites slabs will improve the anti-cracking ability under the loading of composite slabs compared with composite slabs consisting of self-compacting lightweight aggregate concrete (SCLC). FEM on the flexural properties of SCRLC composites slabs show that the yield load, ultimate load, and deflection corresponding to the yield load and the ultimate load of composite slabs drop as the rubber particles content increases in SCRLC. The variation of SCRLC strength has less impact on the flexural bearing capacity of corresponding composite slabs. Based on the traditional calculated method of the ultimate bending moment of normal concrete (NC) composite slabs, a modified calculated method for the ultimate bending moment of SCRLC composite slabs is proposed.

Concrete mix design and aggregate tests data between 2009 and 2017 in Sudan.

Project description:Over 1000 mix designs data and more than 1400 fine and coarse aggregates tests results data were collected for the previous 10 years in Sudan. The data was organized into spreadsheets creating a data base useful for future studies. The data includes mix designs proportions in terms of cement content, water, fine and coarse aggregate in addition to the used admixtures. Moreover, the data provide the gained concrete strength in 7 and 28 days for those mix designs. The data also includes properties of aggregates such as aggregate type, maximum size, percentage passing sieve 0.6 mm, and silt/clay/dust contents. The data are hosted in Mendely data: Abdelatif et al. (2018).

Mechanical Properties of Chopped Basalt Fiber-Reinforced Lightweight Aggregate Concrete and Chopped Polyacrylonitrile Fiber Reinforced Lightweight Aggregate Concrete.

Project description:In this study, an experimental investigation was conducted on the mechanical properties of lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC) with different chopped fibers, including basalt fiber (BF) and polyacrylonitrile fiber (PANF). The LWAC performance was studied in regard to compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and shear strength at age of 28 days. In addition, the oven-dried density and water absorption were measured as well to confirm whether the specimens match the requirement of standard. In total, seven different mixture groups were designed and approximately 104 LWAC samples were tested. The test results showed that the oven-dried densities of the LWAC mixtures were in range of 1.819-1.844 t/m3 which satisfied the definition of LWAC by Chinese Standard. Additionally, water absorption decreased with the increasing of fiber content. The development tendency of the specific strength of LWAC was the same as that of the cube compressive strength. The addition of fibers had a significant effect on reducing water absorption. Adding BF and PANF into concrete had a relatively slight impact on the compressive strength but had an obvious effect on splitting tensile strength, flexural strength and shear strength enhancement, respectively. In that regard, a 1.5% fiber volume fraction of BF and PANF showed the maximum increase in strength. The use of BF and PANF could change the failure morphologies of splitting tensile and flexural destruction but almost had slight impact on the shear failure morphology. The strength enhancement parameter ? was proposed to quantify the improvement effect of fibers on cube compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength and shear strength, respectively. And the calculation results showed good agreement with test value.

Study on the Microstructure of the New Paste of Recycled Aggregate Self-Compacting Concrete.

Project description:Previous literature indicates a decrease in the mechanical properties of various concrete types that contain recycled aggregates (RA), due to their porosity and to their interface of transition zone (ITZ). However, other components of the RA concrete microstructure have not yet been explored, such as the modification of the new paste (NP) with respect to a reference concrete. This paper deals with the microstructure of the new paste of self-compacting concrete (SCC) for different levels of RA. The water to binder ratio (w/b) was kept constant for all concrete mixtures, and equal to 0.5. The SCC mixtures were prepared with percentages of coarse RA of 0%, 30%, 50% and 100%. Mercury intrusion porosimetry test (MIP) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) observations were conducted on the new paste of each concrete. The results indicated that the porosity of the new paste presents a significant variation for replacement percentages of 50% and 100% with respect to NP0 and NP30. However, RA contributed to the refinement of the pore structure of the new paste. The amount of macrospores the diameter of which is in the 50-10,000 nm range was reduced to 20% for NP50 and NP100, while it was about 30% for NP0 and NP30, attributed to the water released by RA. Compressive strength loss for SCC50 and SCC100 concretes are both influenced by porosity of RA, and by the NP porosity. The latter is similar for these two concretes with the 26% increase compared to a reference concrete.

Properties of concrete mortar incorporating recycle pulverized sandblasting waste as additives.

Project description:Sandblasting waste is a by-product obtained from the ship maintenance industry which is rich in silica content. This waste has a smaller particle size compared with typical sand and contains a high prevalence of impurities, so it is categorized as toxic and hazardous materials based on Indonesian Law. Furthermore, it also has not been efficiently harnessed, with most of it being relegated to disposal in waste landfills. To solve those problems, this research aimed to reduce the waste by reuse and recycle the sandblasting waste. In this study, the Pulverized Sandblasting Waste (PSW) used as additives in concrete mortars. Prior to use as an additive in mortar, the sandblasting waste was pretreated using chemical and mechanical processes. The mechanical pre-treatment was performed by pulverization for 8 and 12 h, later called PSW8h and PSW12h, respectively. Eleven mixture proportions were designed with constant Cement and w/c ratio. The PSW was added to the mortar specimens with a percentage of 0-5% from the weight of Cement as an additive. The test performed in this study includes compressive strength, Strength Activation Index (SAI), porosity, water absorption, and flexural test. The experimental results show that adding PSW into the mortar can enhance compressive and flexural strength. Furthermore, the results indicate that mortar with PSW has significantly lower porosity and water absorption than the control mixture. Using PSW with finer particle size shows better results in mechanical and durability properties of mortar, especially in concrete compressive and flexural strength.

Shear Strength of Fiber Reinforced Recycled Aggregate Concrete.

Project description:In this paper, shear strength of fiber reinforced recycled concrete was investigated. A Self Consolidated Concrete (SCC) matrix with 100% coarse recycled aggregate and different types of fibers were used in the study. Steel (3D and 5D), synthetic and hybrid fibers with a volume fraction of 0.75% were added to the concrete matrix to prepare eight beams. In addition, two beams were cast without fibers as control specimens. All beams were prepared without shear reinforcement and were tested to evaluate concrete contribution to the shear capacity. In addition, optical images were captured to allow for full-field displacement measurements using Digital Image Correlation (DIC). The results showed about 23.44-64.48% improvement in the average concrete shear capacity for fiber-reinforced beams when compared to that of the control specimens. The percentage improvement was affected by fiber type and the steel fiber beams achieved the best performance. The addition of the fiber delayed the crack initiation and improved the post-cracking and ductile behavior of all beams. Moreover, the experimental results were compared to those predicted by codes and proposed equations found in the literature for concrete strength with and without fibers.

On the Structural Performance of Recycled Aggregate Concrete Columns with Glass Fiber-Reinforced Composite Bars and Hoops.

Project description:Structural members comprising geopolymer recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) reinforced with glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars have not been investigated appropriately for axial compressive loading cases. The present study addresses this knowledge gap by evaluating the structural efficiency of GFRP-reinforced geopolymer recycled aggregate concrete (GGRAC)-based members subjected to axial compressive loading. A total of nine compressive members (250 mm in cross-section and 1150 mm in height) were constructed to examine the effect of the number of longitudinal GFRP bars and the vertical spacing of transverse GFRP hoops/ties. The experimental results portrayed that the ductility of GGRAC compressive members improved with the reduction in the pitch of GFRP hoops. The axial load-carrying capacity (LCC) of GGRAC compressive members increased by increasing the number of GFRP bars up to eight (corresponding to a reinforcement ratio of 2.11%) while it decreased by using ten longitudinal GFRP bars (corresponding to a reinforcement ratio of 2.65%). Additionally, an empirical model was suggested to predict the axial LCC of GGRAC compressive members based on a large amount of experimental data of similar members. The experimental results and related theoretical predictions substantially prove the applicability and accuracy of the proposed model. The proposed column represents a feasible structural member in terms of material availability and environmental sustainability.

Hungarian Fine-to-Coarse Aggregate, a Possible Constituent of Near-Vessel Structural Concrete of Nuclear Power Plants.

Project description:Significant gravel mines, representative of four regions of Hungary (northeast, central, northwest, and southwest) were systematically sampled to characterize their sand and pebbles as potential constituents of nuclear-grade concrete. The samples were analysed for their elemental compositions as a function of the mining locality and grain size, using two complementary neutron-based analytical techniques, prompt gamma activation analysis (PGAA) and neutron activation analysis (NAA). The combined analysis resulted in reliable mass fractions for over thirty elements that could be used to assess the radiation shielding and activation properties of the resulting concrete, essential in nuclear applications, by means of computer simulations. The studied aggregates are proven to be appropriate constituents for biological shielding at radiological centres, NPPs, and at nuclear research installations, even in mixed neutron/gamma radiation fields. The elemental compositions also revealed geochemical differences between the sedimentologically different regions.

Influence of Nominal Maximum Aggregate Size and Aggregate Gradation on Pore Characteristics of Porous Asphalt Concrete.

Project description:Porous asphalt concrete (PAC) has been used to improve the traffic conditions in rainy weather due to its high porosity. Aggregate size and gradation have great impact on the connected pore structure, which ultimately affects the permeability of porous asphalt concrete. In this paper, the topological properties of connective pores including pore area, pore circularity, equivalent pore diameter, and void network of porous asphalt concrete with different nominal maximum aggregate sizes and gradations were analyzed using x-ray computer tomography scans and the image processing technique. It was observed that the maximum aggregate sizes will not have significant effect on the percentage of connected pores to total pores for porous asphalt concrete. Furthermore, the percentage of connected pores to total pores is related to the air void content, but for PAC-13 with 20% target air void content or above, the connectivity does not seem to have a sharp increase. Additionally, porous asphalt concrete with a smaller nominal particle size or lower target air void content seems to generate a more concentrated distribution of Eqdiameter. Moreover, pore circularities for porous asphalt concrete with a maximum aggregate size of 10 mm or above are independent of maximum aggregate sizes. Air void contents ranging from 16% to 21% do not have a significant effect on the voids' circularity. Furthermore, the branching nodes in porous asphalt concrete with a smaller nominal maximum aggregate size or lower target air void content have a more uniform spatial distribution. However, the percentage of cross-linked number to total node raises as the nominal maximum aggregate size or target air void content increases.
