Translation and cultural adaptation of the CLEFT-Q for use in Colombia, Chile, and Spain.

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND:Cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) is a common congenital craniofacial anomaly that may negatively affect an individual's appearance, health-related quality of life, or speech. In Spain, Colombia, and Chile the overall prevalence of CL/P ranges from 0.53 to 1.59 cases per 1000 live births. Currently, there is no patient-reported outcome (PRO) instrument that is specific for patients with CL/P. The CLEFT-Q is a new PRO instrument developed to measure outcomes of treatment in patients 8 to 29 years of age with CL/P. The aim of this study was to translate and culturally adapt the CLEFT-Q for use in Colombia, Chile, and Spain. METHODS:The CLEFT-Q was translated from English to 3 Spanish language varieties (Colombian, Chilean, and Spanish (Spain)) and Catalan. Translation and cultural adaptation guidelines set forth by the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research were followed. RESULTS:The field- test version of the CLEFT-Q consisted of 13 scales (total 154 items) measuring appearance, health-related quality of life, and facial function. Forward translations revealed 10 (7%) items that were difficult to translate into Chilean, and back translations identified 34 (22%) and 21 (13%) items whose meaning differed from the English version in at least 1 of the 3 Spanish varieties and Catalan respectively. Twenty-one participants took part in cognitive debriefing interviews. Participants were recruited from plastic surgery centres in Bogotá, Colombia (n?=?4), Santiago, Chile (n?=?7), and Barcelona, Spain (n?=?10). Most participants were males (n?=?14, 67%) and were diagnosed with CL/P (n?=?17, 81%). Participants reported difficulty understanding 1 item in the Colombian, 1 item in the Spanish (Spain), and 11 items from the Catalan version. Comparison of the 3 Spanish varieties revealed 61 (40%) of the 154 items whose wording differed across the 3 Spanish versions. CONCLUSION:Translation and cultural adaptation processes provided evidence of transferability of the CLEFT-Q scales into 3 Spanish varieties and Catalan, as semantic, idiomatic, experiential, and conceptual equivalence of the items, instructions, and response options were achieved.

Project description:BackgroundPeyronie's disease has an impact on men's mental and physical health.AimWe sought to translate the Peyronie's Disease Questionnaire into Danish, adapt it to the Danish cultural setting, and test it in a Danish population.MethodsTranslation of the Peyronie's Disease Questionnaire was performed according to the guidelines for adapting health status measures for use in languages other than the source language by Beaton et al. The validated American Peyronie's Disease Questionnaire was developed to monitor patient symptoms after an intervention and to inspire a subsequent dialogue about physical and psychological symptoms with a healthcare provider, thereby allowing the patient and the healthcare professional to choose the best treatment. The expert committee agreed on a Danish version after cross-cultural adaptation. The Danish Peyronie's Disease Questionnaire was sent by electronic mail to a preselected group of 41 men with Peyronie's disease.OutcomesAfter completing the questionnaire, 32 men participated in a video interview regarding the questionnaire and were asked to identify any problematic fields or areas open to misunderstanding.ResultsThe Peyronie's Disease Questionnaire underwent major modifications in light of the comments of the first 10 respondents. Thereafter, only minor changes were made until data saturation was reached after 27 of the 32 respondents had been interviewed. In 87% of respondents Peyronie's disease bothered from the last time they had intercourse, and 93% of the men experienced being bothered by having intercourse less often. Peyronie's disease made 73% of respondents feel bodily discomfort, and 88% had intercourse less often than they used to have due to Peyronie's disease.Clinical implicationsThe Peyronie's Disease Questionnaire is a valuable tool in the crucial task of addressing Peyronie's disease, providing insight into the mental and sexual health problems as well as physical challenges faced by patients.Strengths and limitationsThe interviewer's modest experience in conducting interviews is believed to have been duly compensated for by continuous and accumulating learning-while-doing process because the same interviewer conducted all of the interviews and did so consecutively.ConclusionsDanish men expressed satisfaction with the questionnaire and found it valuable as a tool when visiting the doctor for the first time.

Project description:Objectives: The implementation of obstetric hybrid simulation and interprofessional collaboration between midwives and anesthetists in labor emergencies fostered the need to evaluate the impact of such a program. The original Interprofessional Attitude Scale (IPAS) assesses interprofessional attitudes among health professional students and includes the 2011 and 2016 Interprofessional Collaborative Practice report competency domains. The purpose of this study was to create a German version of the IPAS (G-IPAS) to use for the education of healthcare students. Methods: We performed the translation and validation of the IPAS in five steps: translation to German according to the International Society of Pharmaeconomics and Outcome Research guidelines; nine cognitive interviews with healthcare professionals and students;calculation of the Content Validity Index (CVI) by expert opinion; exploratory factor analysis (EFA); and internal consistency by Cronbach's alpha. All study participants gave written informed consent and the cantonal ethics committee waived further ethical approval. Results: The cognitive interviews led to replacement of single-item wording. We retained 27 items for CVI analysis. The averaged overall CVI was 0.79, with 15 items ?0.89. 185 students (70 medicine, 51 nursing, 48 physiotherapy, and 16 midwifery) contributed with data for the EFA and it produced three subscales. "Teamwork, roles, and responsibilities" with factor loadings ?0.49, "Patient-centeredness" with factor loadings ?0.31, and "Community-centeredness" with factor loadings ?0.57. Two items of the total scale were deleted, and four items were redistributed to another subscale. Cronbach's alpha for the overall G-IPAS scale was 0.87. After deleting and redistributing items in subscales, a new Scale-CVI/Average was calculated and was 0.82. Conclusions: Based on a rigorous validation process, the G-IPAS provides a reliable tool to assess attitudes towards interprofessional education among different healthcare professions in German-speaking countries.
