Preorganized Ag^I Bimetallic Precursor with Labile Diphosphorus Ligands for a Programmed Synthesis of Organometallic-Organic Hybrid Polymers.

ABSTRACT: An Ag^I dimer capped with labile organometallic diphosphorus ligands [Cp₂ Mo₂ (CO)₄ (?² -P₂ )] (Cp=C₅ H₅ ) acts as a highly pre-organized molecular precursor to direct the construction of 1D or 2D, and 3D organometallic-organic hybrid coordination polymers upon reaction with ditopic pyridine-based linkers. The formation of the supramolecular aggregates can be controlled by the stoichiometry of the organic molecules, and the mechanism is supported by DFT calculations.

Heterogeneous Rh and Rh/Ag bimetallic nanoparticle catalysts immobilized on chiral polymers.

Project description:The development of heterogeneous chiral catalysts has lagged far behind that of homogeneous chiral catalysts in spite of their advantages, such as environmental friendliness for a sustainable society. We describe herein novel heterogeneous chiral Rh and Rh/Ag bimetallic nanoparticle catalysts consisting of polystyrene-based polymers with chiral diene moieties. The catalysts enable high-to-excellent yields and enantioselectivities to be obtained in asymmetric 1,4-addition reactions of arylboronic acids with α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds such as ketones, esters, and amides, and in other asymmetric reactions. The catalysts could be readily recovered by simple filtration and reused; they could also be applied to continuous-flow synthesis. We also discuss the nature of possible reaction species based on XPS analysis.

Kinetic control over the chiral-selectivity in the formation of organometallic polymers on a Ag(110) surface.

Project description:Methods to control chiral-selectivity in molecular reactions through external inputs are of importance, both from a fundamental and technological point of view. Here, the self-assembly of prochiral 6,12-dibromochrysene monomers on Ag(110) is studied using scanning tunneling microscopy. Deposition of the monomers on a substrate held at room temperature leads to the formation of 1D achiral organometallic polymers. When the monomers are instead deposited on a substrate held at 373 K, homochiral organometallic polymers consisting of either the left- or right-handed enantiomer are formed. Post-deposition annealing of room temperature deposited samples at >373 K does not transform the achiral 1D organometallic polymers into homochiral ones and thus, does not yield the same final structure as if depositing onto a substrate held at the same elevated temperature. Furthermore, annealing promotes neither the formation of 1D covalently-coupled polymers nor the formation of graphene nanoribbons. Our results identify substrate temperature as an important factor in on-surface chiral synthesis, thereby demonstrating the importance of considering kinetic effects and the decisive role they can play in structure formation.

Rapid Ag Nanofiber Formation Via Pt Nanoparticle-Assisted H2-Free Reduction of Ag+-Containing Polymers.

Project description:One-dimensional Ag nanostructure-based networks have garnered significant attention as next-generation transparent conductive materials. Ag nanofibers (NFs) with high aspect ratios decrease the number density required for percolation; hence, they form qualitatively superior transparent conductive films. This study reports a novel method for rapidly fabricating Ag NFs via Pt nanoparticle-assisted H2-free reduction of solid-state AgNO3. Our results first indicated that polymers can be a source of hydrogen gas in the presence of Pt nanoparticles; Ag NFs with aspect ratios above 105 were obtained herein by heating AgNO3-containing polymer NFs in a short period of time and in an open-air environment. Our method not only successfully reduced the amount of polymer residue often encountered in spun NFs but also created an effective self-supporting reduction system that does not require an external reducing gas supply. The obtained Ag NF networks were highly conductive and transparent. Moreover, the mechanism of Ag NF formation was investigated. We demonstrate that the proposed method exhibits a high potential for producing high yields of Ag NFs in a simple and rapid manner.

Rapidly sequence-controlled electrosynthesis of organometallic polymers.

Project description:Single rich-stimuli-responsive organometallic polymers are considered to be the candidate for ultrahigh information storage and anti-counterfeiting security. However, their controllable synthesis has been an unsolved challenge. Here, we report the rapidly sequence-controlled electrosynthesis of organometallic polymers with exquisite insertion of multiple and distinct monomers. Electrosynthesis relies on the use of oxidative and reductive C-C couplings with the respective reaction time of 1?min. Single-monomer-precision propagation does not need protecting and deprotecting steps used in solid-phase synthesis, while enabling the uniform synthesis and sequence-defined possibilities monitored by both UV-vis spectra and cyclic voltammetry. Highly efficient electrosynthesis possessing potentially automated production can incorporate an amount of available metal and ligand species into a single organometallic polymer with complex architectures and functional versatility, which is proposed to have ultrahigh information storage and anti-counterfeiting security with low-cost coding and decoding processes at the single organometallic polymer level.

A trimetallic organometallic precursor for efficient water oxidation.

Project description:Herein, we report an iron/nickel/zinc mixed oxide as a catalyst for the electrochemical water oxidation. This catalyst was synthesized by a straightforward method for the synthesis of an iron/nickel/zinc mixed oxide through the calcination of a Fe/Ni/Zn organometallic compound. The calcined product contains Fe and Ni as crucial ions for water oxidation, accompanied by the presence of Zn ions. The removal of Zn ions from the mixed oxide provides more active sites on the surface of the catalyst. The composition of the compound was characterized by some common methods and found to be an efficient water-oxidizing catalyst. The catalyst on FTO at pH?=?13 yields a current density of 12?mA/cm2 at 1.2?V (vs. Ag?AgCl). After 5?hours at 1.1?V, the electrode not only shows no decrease in performance, but also shows an increase from 4 to 7?mA/cm2 in the water oxidation activity. Tafel plot, for the electrode at pH?=?13 in KOH solution (0.1?M) showed linearity for the graph of lg j vs. V with both relatively low (220.4?mV per decade) and high overpotentials (903.7?mV per decade).

Charge-Transfer Spectroscopy of Ag+(Benzene) and Ag+(Toluene).

Project description:Gas-phase ion-molecule complexes of silver cation with benzene or toluene are produced via laser vaporization in a pulsed supersonic expansion. These ions are mass-selected and photodissociated with tunable UV-visible lasers. In both cases, photodissociation produces the organic cation as the only fragment via a metal-to-ligand charge-transfer process. The wavelength dependence of the photodissociation produces electronic spectra of the charge-transfer process. Broad structureless spectra result from excitation to the repulsive wall of the charge-transfer excited states. Additional transitions are detected correlating to the forbidden 1S → 1D silver cation-based atomic resonance and to the HOMO-LUMO excitation on the benzene or toluene ligand. Transitions to these states produce the same molecular cation photofragments produced in the charge-transfer transitions, indicating an unanticipated excited-state curve-crossing mechanism. Spectra measured for these ions are compared to those for ions tagged with argon atoms. The presence of argon causes a significant shift on the energetic positions of these electronic transitions for both Ag+(benzene) and Ag+(toluene).

Giant Enhancement of Carrier Mobility in Bimetallic Coordination Polymers.

Project description:Electrically conductive metal-organic coordination polymers (CPs) are promising candidates for a variety of technological applications. However, poor energetic and spatial overlap between the sp-electrons of organic ligands and the d-electrons of metal ion often blocks an effective charge transport (mobility) across CPs. Herein, we present a bimetallic design principle for enhancing carrier mobility in CPs. Bimetallic CPs of Fe(III) and Cr(III) ions coordinated to 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (BTC) ligand (Fe-BTC-Cr) exhibited remarkably high carrier mobility at the matching mole ratio (1:1) with enhancement factors of 102 and 104 in comparison to those of monometallic parents, Fe-BTC and Cr-BTC, respectively. The observation was substantiated by lowering of the band gap between the valence band and the conduction band upon the formation of a hybrid p-n-type structure in the bimetallic CPs. The direct current conductivity values of the CPs measured by four-probe technique were in good agreement with the alternating current conductivity values obtained from the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Our flexible approach of picking and choosing the appropriate combination of metal ions from the periodic table is expected to generate various CPs with desirable semiconducting properties.

Plasmon-induced broadband fluorescence enhancement on Al-Ag bimetallic substrates.

Project description:Surface enhanced fluorescence (SEF) utilizes the local electromagnetic environment to enhance fluorescence from the analyte on the surface of a solid substrate with nanostructures. While the detection sensitivity of SEF is improved with the development of nano-techniques, detection of multiple analytes by SEF is still a challenge due to the compromise between the high enhancing efficiency and broad response bandwidth. In this article, a high-efficiency SEF substrate with broad response bandwidth is obtained by embedding silver in an aluminum film to produce additional bonding and anti-bonding hybridized states. The bimetallic film is fabricated by ion implantation and the ion energy and fluence are tailored to control subsurface location of the fabricated bimetallic nanostructures. The process circumvents the inherent limit of aluminum materials and extends the plasmon band of aluminum from deep UV to visible range. Fluorescence from different dyes excited by 310 nm to 555 nm is enhanced by up to 11 folds on the single bimetallic film and the result is theoretically confirmed by finite-difference time-domain simulations. This work demonstrates that bimetallic film can be used for optical detection of multiple analytes.

Physical Origin of Dual-Emission of Au-Ag Bimetallic Nanoclusters.

Project description:On the origin of photoluminescence of noble metal NCs, there are always hot debates: metal-centered quantum-size confinement effect VS ligand-centered surface state mechanism. Herein, we provided solid evidence that structural water molecules (SWs) confined in the nanocavity formed by surface-protective-ligand packing on the metal NCs are the real luminescent emitters of Au-Ag bimetal NCs. The Ag cation mediated Au-Ag bimetal NCs exhibit the unique pH-dependent dual-emission characteristic with larger Stokes shift up to 200 nm, which could be used as potential ratiometric nanosensors for pH detection. Our results provide a completely new insight on the understanding of the origin of photoluminescence of metal NCs, which elucidates the abnormal PL emission phenomena, including solvent effect, pH-dependent behavior, surface ligand effect, multiple emitter centers, and large-Stoke's shift.

Tailored Engineering of Bimetallic Plasmonic Au@Ag Core@Shell Nanoparticles.

Project description:A distinctive synthetic method for the efficient synthesis of multifunctional bimetallic plasmonic Au@Ag core@shell nanoparticles (NPs) with tunable size, morphology, and localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) using Triton X-100/hexanol-1/deionized water/cyclohexane-based water-in-oil (W/O) microemulsion (ME) is described. The W/O ME acted as a "true nanoreactor" for the synthesis of Au@Ag core@shell NPs by providing a confined and controlled environment and suppressing the nucleation, growth, agglomeration, and aggregation of the NPs. High-resolution transmission electron microscopic analysis of the synthesized Au@Ag core@shell NPs revealed an "unusual core@shell" contrast, and the selected area electron diffraction and Moiré patterns showed that Au layers are paralleled to Ag layers, thus indicating the formation of Au@Ag core@shell NPs. Interestingly, the UV-visible spectrum of the Au@Ag core@shell NPs exhibited enthralling plasmonic properties by introducing a high-frequency quadrupolar LSPR mode originated from the isolated Au@Ag NPs along with a low-frequency dipolar LSPR mode originated from the coupled Au@Ag NPs. The effective plasmonic enhancement of the Au@Ag core@shell NPs is attributed to the extreme enhancement of the localized electromagnetic field by coupling of the localized surface plasmons of the Au core and Ag shell. The mechanisms for the nucleation and growth of Au@Ag core@shell NPs in W/O ME have been proposed. A unique electron transfer phenomenon between the Au core and Ag shell is elucidated for better understanding and manipulation of the electronic properties, which evinced the development of Au@Ag core@shell NPs through suppression of the galvanic replacement reaction.
