The histone H3 N-terminal protein domain (N-tail) is regulated by multiple posttranslational modifications, including methylation, acetylation, phosphorylation, and by proteolytic cleavage. However, the mechanism underlying H3 N-tail proteolytic cleavage is largely elusive.
